I think the problem is that in America our eggs are not shaped like footballs. See in America our eggs have one skinny end and one fat end, while in Europe, apparently your eggs are photoshopped.

Just kidding. Yeah it sucks that 2 sports have the same name, and I see why football fans are upset by "American football". But, when I and most Americans think of football we are going to think about the wrong game, and this isn't going to change soon.

Feet are used in almost any sport though. ^^

Except Starcraft I guess.

Thorzain disproved this at NASL.

I wasn't going to comment on this post, but after some reflection, I realized that this incorrectness in naming extends to so many other sports, the whole 'football vs. soccer' dilemma is the least of our worries!

Look at this athlete, one who engages in a sport universally referred to as 'basket-ball'
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

Despite the name of the sport, this player is handling the ball with his hands! If football is so named because the players handle the ball with their feet, then why is this player not using his baskets to handle the ball?
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

What about these athletes, who claim to be playing 'volleyball!?' Again, they are handling the ball with their hands, and their 'volleys' are nowhere to be found!
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

This man appears to be hitting a ball with a racquet of some kind, so one might expect that his sport be called 'racquetball.' Instead, the sport goes by the completely nonsensical name of 'tennis!'
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

Oh well, it seems like no sport these days has been named with even an ounce of sense, I'll just stick to watching my football.

Hey, hey. Let's not forget that our testicles are egg shaped also. We refer to them as balls.

But then again, the only real sports event that I make sure not to miss is the World Cup, every four years.

meh, football is football and soccer is soccer. seems pretty simple to me. Although soccer should perhaps be called falling down constantly and trying to get a penalty ball.

english is the only language I know that says balls for testicles. In german it's eier which translates to eggs.

Haha you guys are crazy.
I don't get the whole football, football, soccer, whatever thing either, but it's not that big of a deal.
I call football, football, and American football, American football.

The word "literally" actually means figuratively now, this is the least of our problems.

In Czech we use both words - eggs, balls. But we use word "balls" more frequently.

In an effort to derail this thread further handegg MVP has to be Manning. And I'm talking about Peyton not Eli (yes even after last night's victory Peyton still should be the MVP).

I just saw this and will continue.

Peyton must be so proud, they're growing up so fast.

Neither the sport nor the usage of the term "football" to describe it originate in the US. However, I can't speak to the origin of the term "handegg".

I would also say (and I know the guy was joking, but still) that the names of basketball and volleyball fit their respective sports quite well.

America --- inventing sports to replace those that they suck at since the Dawn of Time.

If you saw what kind of soccer infrastructure is being created right now as we speak - you'd be scared, very scared. USA is going to own with it's own talent very soon, huge amount of kids are already choosing soccer over other sports at school. Give it time, US already has a team as good (or better) as second-tier Euro teams.

The biggest obstacle that soccer has to overcome in the US is that stigma of a sport for sissies and crybabies, because that's what most older folks make fun of. Seeing how soccer is still shit in terms of fake injuries and diving and nonstop pauses (even progressively getting worse from what I observe) I'm not sure how long it will take to change the mentality.

top US athletes play basketball/football, top european athletes play soccer

there's the explanation of the discrepancy right there.

imagine a soccer team composed of 11 top NFL WRs or CBs, and imagine they played soccer all their life instead of football. team would be top-tier for sure.
