In the Midwest in the 90s, it was still a pretty new phenomenon to have an openly gay student at your high school, much less a Christian high school. But Chris was a really approachable and fun to hang out with guy, and so instead of scenes from glee, for the most part, he had a lot of friends, one of which was me. But even being somewhat popular there always was a novelty factor that never quite went away for him, and people would ask him oddly personal questions because they were curious. To his credit, he never got mad about it, and just went along with it, part of the reason I think people liked being around him so much.

The thing is, to people from my area at that time, it was something unknown, not unlike Esports is to investors and the general public. WOAH WOAH WOAH, I know your probly thinking, he’s really stretching this one out, but there is a story that the recent conflicts in esports reminds me of and I wanted to share it. One time I was talking to Chris and he had gotten on to the topic of people being a little to fascinated by his preference, he told me, “You know what really bothers me is, people are always trying to set me up, they are like, hey! I know the perfect guy for you. And basically what this means is, I know a SECOND gay guy! People are so surprised by the homosexuality part they forget that I have a type just like anybody else. They just think, he’s gay and this guy is gay, they will LOVE each other.” And I don’t think this is all to irrelevant to esports.

Lately there has been a lot of heat or backlash for either putting 2 games on the same stream or for having ridiculed it. And I think it’s weird that people would expect others to like it, even in my playing prefrences there are certain games I play, and ones I don’t, so why for viewing would I want to see anything competitive, as long as it is a game? Ever gone to a mixed boxing/mma event, I have it’s a mess, imagine 3k guys in affliction t-shirts that all hate each others events, It’s a hell of a lot worse than stream monsters blowing up a game they would never dream of playing.

All I’m trying to say is, lets end this novelty of esports fans being esports fans. There is no reason to mix the streams any more than we already have, Valle and Spooky and others have got a great production, and I like to watch it, MLG, GSL , they do a good job, even being a fan of both, why do they have to be mixed? I know you maybe have your game that hasen’t blown up and you want to get in on that 40k viewer sc2 stream or that 100k viewer evo stream, but throw up a commercial or something don’t make the boxing fan sit through the mma fight or vice versa.

Gamer =/= every genre

Why can't we all be bisexual. The world would be so nice. Orgies and orgies galore.

eSports can't stand alone.

If you think that, then you should only watch GSL.

It's not about standing alone. It's about the produce staying in the produce section and the meats in the meat section.

Hmm I'm pretty sure the majority of bisexuals don't engage in orgies. Seems like a misconception to me. Hell if I know though.

Oh and the blog seemed somewhat... uhh contrived to me but it was well written.

From what I've seen, all the dual game streams have come from tournament with single streams.

IPL and NASL don't have a "SC2" and "LoL/HoN" stream the same way MLG/ESL/DH does.

MLG/ESL/DH has never done that, they have their dedicated streams and they keep it.

Exactly. IPL and NASL should follow MLG/Dreamhack's example and have separate streams for separate games. This way finals for one game would not be delayed or have awkward scheduling because of another game.

Yeah, those darn perfect worlds.

As if there aren't more things that would be easier to implement and more time-worthy.

Right now, I don't see a problem with different games being on different streams. I follow the schedule, and then if it's behind I wait. Fuck, being a patient well-rounded adult fucking rules.

haha i can totally see how fucking annoying it would be to be gay and people being all like HEY THIS GUY IS GAY TOO! you should get together. Hey nttea! we found a GIRL and u're a guy, you are perfect for eachother!! the esports thing is less interesting though i am 100% for idea that different ESPORTS games are pretty like different conventional sports, just because you are a fan of one doesn't mean you should be a fan of the other. However i think people get a bit closeminded and just like most sports fans are fans of several sports i believe any hardcore sc2 watcher should be able to appreciate other awesome esports

Actually good analogy, echoes some of my opinions. I don't dislike Dota or Halo or Quake or SF, but I don't have the knowledge to enjoy those tournaments, I'd much rather just watch whatever I came for and be done with it.

So that I have time to play.

I only support StarCraft, if I supported any other games because they are eSports people might start thinking I support them, which I don't.

It's like saying support fascism to a bunch of communists because one ideology cannot stand alone.

First... I agree 100% that liking starcraft =/= liking/supporting all esports. Mixed events (boxing/mma) like you described are a horrible idea and 'esports' should not do the same.

Many sports channels (and regular tv channels that also show sports) will show multiple/different sports. It's not uncommon to have a Football (soccer) game in the morning and then Hockey in the evening (or something like that). Also, sports shows like sportscenter cover news from any/all sports.

I don't think it's strange that esports would do the same. There also has to be some concessions made because big LAN events often host multiple tournaments. Blizcon (and the Bliz invitationals leading up to it) had a focus on SC2 and WoW arena. I don't care to watch any WoW so I only tune in for the SC2. Same with NASL showing HoN (or LoL - I apologize, I didn't pay much attention).

What I do have a problem with is when tournament A conflicts with tournament B. If Blizcon/NASL/DH/etc tells me SC2 starts at 20:00 and I tune in at 20:00 and they're not even close to being ready to show me what I tuned in for I'll be upset. Now, obviously tournament times can vary, but tournaments should have different streams so that fans can watch what they expect to.

Watch the GSL.

Mixing boxing and MMA isn't necessary because they can stand alone.

SC2 can standalone with a little studio in SKorea (you know, the "Mecca" of Starcraft).

I ... completely agree.

Although the idea of a spooky streaming the next IEM NY with yipes on the mic is tempting, I do think its best to not force communities together. Even within genres, it's plainly obvious how much people can hate the other games. Just look at all the HoN vs LoL vs Dota that pops up everywhere.

And, to be honest, it's to be expected. Try to force Americans to watch a champions league match and they'll rage just as much as our sc2 stream monsters did when LoL got put in the way of sc2 at a recent IEM.

Personally, I stream monster anything with good commentary, but I wouldn't expect most people to.

it's not just the genre either, there's a ton of hate on stream chat when tekken goes on a fighting game stream populated by sf4 players.

tekken is the best example although any game that's not mvc3 or sf4 gets that kind of hate.

of course you can always turn your stream off and do something else until it's time for your event. welcome to regular TV.

Here's the scoop:

The people involved in shouting from the rooftops, SUPPORT OTHER ESPORTS!!!!!!!!! tried to build their lives and careers on other games not as successful as SC2.

When the dollars flowed into SC2, they jumped on board, creating content and shows and becoming the personalities we know today.

Now they shout LOVE OTHER GAMES because they want to go back to where they were before SC2 but taking the success with them. They feel we the audience are obligated to support their shit because they supported ours.

I'm not interested in watching FPS games or fighting games, or even other strategy games really, Just like the OP says you wouldn't take a baseball game and a basketball game, cram them into one stadium and make half the fans watch a game they don't want.

Besides, we live in the "on demand" society, where because everything is digital we can pick and choose exactly what we want in our content. FORCING us to have shitty content on a channel we don't want is a step backwards into TV land, and everyone knows TV sucks.

I had to stop using the word ESPORTS as much as soon as it meant something other than Brood War to people, because ESPORTS still only means Brood War to me. I don't really know what that has to do with gay people though, you should have skipped the anecdote.

Strange choice of analogy but it sort of got the message across, at least to me. Or maybe I would have gotten your message without the gay friend analogy, I don't know. Anyhow, valid point, although I'm not a big fan of watching gazillions of streams all day/night, so I don't know too much about the suffering from watching an entire event with mixed genres of games on stream. I pretty much just tune into a specific stream for a specific SCBW or SC2 event, then once that's over, I tune off.
