I have been here for a very long time, but never found it within myself to create a profile and start posting regularely. As many of you are, I am also university student. A poor, poor university student.
As many of us all do, I continue to destroy my marks in school simply because i stay up late to watch Starcraft 2 and as much Starcraft action i can get my hands on. Now normally im not a very social person and i tend to stay in my tiny room quite a bit. But one day, Blizzcon to be exact, I decided to do something that I've never done before. I left my door open and unplugged my headphones from my computer.
Now most of my roommates would walk by, lean in, and walk away uninterested in what I am doing. I said that im not a very social person and could end up being described as socially awkward, but for some reason, I put all that awkwardness away that one fateful day. He asked me what I was doing and if i could turn it down because it was a bit loud. For some godforsaken reason, I decided to stand up for myself and say "No, this is Starcraft, and yes, it may be loud but i care about this too much to lower the volume. He then proceded to walk in, sit on my bed and start watching silently with me.
I would cheer every so often, but quiet down very quickly when i realized i wasn't alone in my room.
Another person eventually walked into my room after 20 minutes, sat down and started watching. Then another... At the end of the night, when it was the GSL finals of MMA vs. MVP, everyone in the house (8 people) were in my room watching that game.
Now it may not seem like much to you, but this means alot to me. Recently reading iNcontrol's blog about what we can do to help eSports, i thought to myself, this is a perfect time to share my story.
As Day[9] puts it best in his 100th daily, he said what I say now. 'To forget being one of those quiet people who never talks about games, and to start telling people how amazing it actually it.'
The day after the GSL finals, each one of my roommates went out and bought Starcraft 2. We all play fun games together and now they come knocking at my door to find out when the next big game is or when their favorite player will be playing. Now, instead of cramming 8 people into my tiny room, we hook up the computer to the TV and have Starcraft night whenever a major tournament or big games are happening.
I care about this game and will sontinue to support it no matter my grades, no matter my job, no matter how many friends I have, because I am passionate about Starcraft and it matters to me. By doing one small thing, leaving my door open, I have introduced 7 people into the world of eSports.I want to say thank you to everyone at Team Liquid. Without coming here, my roommates and I would have no idea about the thing we now know and love as eSports.
So thank you
