2번째 싱글 앨범 리뷰
아주 어렸을 때, 생각했다. 나는 결코 비를 맞지 않을 거야. 좀 더 자란 후에는 생각했다, 왜 비는 나에게만 쏟아질까. '어른'이라는 단어가 목구멍 끝에서 꼬물거리는 오늘, 다시 비가 내리고 있다.
Cryim의 노래에선 빗소리가 들린다. 비에 씻긴 말간 풍경도 보인다. 비를 피해갈 수 없다는 걸 알아버린 사람의 노래. 비가 나에게만 내리는 건 아니라는 것마저도 알아버린 사람의 노래. 다시 비가 올 걸 알지만 비 개인 세상에도 반갑게 인사할 줄 아는 사람의 노래. 마치 '어느새 훌쩍 커버린 키작은 아이<엄마가 둘이야> '의 노래같은.

그래. 그들은 또 훌쩍 자라났다. I'm cry를 도치시켜 만들었다는 그들의 이름처럼, 2009년 발매된 1st single에서 자신의 상처와 아픔을 꼭 쥐고서 '울고 있던' Cryim은, 이제 그 아픔을 보듬고 일어서서 따스하고 힘있는 자신의 목소리를 찾아냈다. 6년동안 20여명에 달하는 멤버교체를 겪으며 수없이 넘어지면서도 자신의 이름을 지켜온 그들은, 지금까지의 여성 보컬 포맷을 과감히 버리고 기타리스트 서기춘을 보컬로 내세우며 당당히 다시 섰다. 또한 객원 기타리스트 Led Boots와의 조우는 섬세하면서도 진한 남성성이 묻어나는 Cryim만의 색깔을 찾았다고 하기에 충분하다.

어쿠스틱 기타의 따스함과 거친 일렉트릭 기타 리프가 묘한 조화를 이루며, 단순한 8비트 리듬 속에 깊은 감성을 담아낸 타이틀곡 <엄마가 둘이야>부터, 꾹꾹 눌러담는 듯한 멜로디에 왠지 모를 중독성이 느껴지는 <Who am I>, 셔플 리듬과 절묘하게 맞아 떨어지는 운율감에 더해진 일렉트릭 피아노의 선율이 감성을 자극하는 <두번째 일기>, 사라지는 것들에 대한 따스한 시선이 하모니카 소리에 녹아들어 있는 <집으로 오는 길>, 한 편의 뮤지컬처럼 경쾌한 발걸음이 눈앞에 그려지다가, 꿈에서 깨어나듯 하나씩 사라지는 악기 소리와 마지막 남은 휘파람 소리가 인상적인 <My song>, 선 굵은 기타 연주와 거친 듯한 보컬의 음색이 어우러져 '남성 락밴드' Cryim의 매력을 한껏 내보이는 <못생긴 아이>까지. 그래, 감히 단언컨대, 그들은 또 한 번 성장했다.

다른 목소리로는 결코 노래할 수 없는 Cryim만의 목소리. 지나온 길들을 외면하지 않으며, 담담히 보듬어 안고 곧게 서서, 다가올 길들을 향해 두렵지만 웃어줄 수 있는 것. 눈물 같은 땀방울이 맺혀 반짝거리는 Cryim의 음악 속에는, 그런 깊은 미소가 비친다.
세상에 스스로를 끼워넣느라 제 목소리를 잃어버린지도 모르는 노래들이 판치는 시끄러운 세상 속에서, Cryim의 다음 앨범이, 그들의 또다른 성장이 벌써부터 몹시도 궁금해진다.

Second Single Album Review
When I was young, I used to think that I would never get caught in the rain. As I got a little older, I wondered why the rain always only fell on me. But today, as the word “adult” escapes from my throat, it's raining once again.
You can hear the sound of the rain in Cryim's songs. You can also see the dry scenery left after the rain has washed away. The song of someone who knows they can't avoid the rain. The song of the person who knows that the rain is falling not only on himself, but on everything else too. The song of the person who has learned to welcome the rain into their own world with a smile, even though they know that it will come again. Just like the short child who has grown up too quickly, in the song “___________”.

They have also grown up quickly. Just like their band name created from an inversion of the words “I'm cry”, Cryim, who took hold of their scars and pain and “cried” in their first single released in 2009, now embrace that pain and have stood up to find a voice that is warm and strong. Over the last 6 years, despite going through almost 20 member changes and numerous challenges, they maintained the same name, boldly abandoned the previous female vocalist format and are now standing strong again, with guitarist Gichun Seo as lead vocalist. And meeting their guest member Led Boots has been enough to help Cryim find their true colours, the same old delicate touch now smeared with a hint of masculinity.

The warmth of acoustic guitar combined with harsh electric guitar riffs create an odd harmony, and from the emotionally charged title track "___________" made up of only 8 beats, to the rich melody of the somehow addictive “Who Am I”, the touching shuffle rhythm and exquisitely matched cadence of “Second Diary”'s electric piano melody, the melting harmonica sound of “The Road Home” which looks at things fading away through tender eyes, contrasted with the musical-esque cheerful footsteps being drawn in front of your eyes in the impressive “My Song”, like waking up from a dream with the sound of the instruments disappearing one by one until only the whistle remains, to the vocals of “Ugly Child” which resemble the rough tones of a captivating guitar performance, and fit perfectly to show off the band's “masculine charm”. All I can say is that they've succeeded again.

The distinctive sound of Cryim is one which other voices could never be able to imitate. Choosing not to disregard their past, they instead embrace it with serenity and stand strong, and although the road ahead is scary they can laugh about it. Amidst the beads of sweat sparkling like tears inside Cryim's music, there is also a bright smile.
In a troubled world filled with songs that might have lost their voice just trying to keep in step, I'm already curious to see Cryim's next development.
