You may notice a surge of bothersome advertisements on TL since their new site changes.
Among others, I have seen:
Thai love links Arab women Russian brides local singles (we had this before, but now we have more)
And then they tell us to turn off ad blocker or else we are hurting esports.
What do the TL powers think of their community when they allow these type of advertisements to flood the website? Right, they think we're all nerdy gamers and bad with ladies. Or at least a large portion of us must be, hence all the online dating ads. Apparently there's an ad for every ethnicity under the sun, in case these lonely men are also picky! TL powers are making a statement about their audience that I find insulting. And if you charge that these are just ads for revenue nothing more, then let me challenge you. Why aren't their any ads for dildos? Or PEZ? Or legos? Or life insurance? Because the stereotypical gamer isn't looking for those things, the ads will allegedly have no appeal. No compared to say, Russian brides.
Go ahead and tell me, "then don't come here." I don't want the ads taken down. They might be in the best interest for revenue for all we know. I'm just pointing out what advertisers think of gamers. What they think of you. And TL is perpetuating that belief with these ads.

|
Actually, google targets people based on their browsing habits, so when you say gamers you really mean you.
Most of my ads are for sports teams and online computer stores.
There is a little blue triangle in the top right of the ads if you don't believe me click it and see for yourself.
GG bro
|
This is stupid. TL has no control on what advertisements that are shown and if anything you have control over it with the way that they are chosen to be shown with modern technology.
|
I don't really understand why they bother people. imo if you are taking offense to them its because you are overly self-conscious about what the ads are telling you. Just don't let them bother you man there's no point at all and I don't find them hostile either lol
|
Well you must be bad with ladies if you don't like watching smiling females IMO.
I prefer these to ugly mugs of horses or other random ads.
Also it's not the advertisers, it's a google service that shows ads relevant to the topics ( as you can see in many threads). I think ThaiLoveLinks, RussianBrides, etc are shown by default when it doesn't spot anything it can "mix" ads in.
Of course I haven't looked that much into how googleads work.

I guess you would have to have cookies etc. on for it to work like that ?
Mine are nearly always these by default but if I'm on the computer for a while they usually change into ads of local newspapers and whatnot. Also I was browsing TL on a university computer yesterday and whaddyagot: Natasha from russia greeting me on the front page. So I think your theory can't hold.
|
Maybe you should stop googling porn
|
The ads were controlled by google, not TL.
|
sure google targets people based on their browsing habits, but some commercials also just goes with certain sites because of that chosen sites target demographic.
I for instance have normal adds and then one for a chinese dating website. Now, I don't visit any dating sites so that is not targeted for me but for the site.
Either way, TL do not decide which advertisements are on the site unless they absolutely refuse to have that certain ad banner.
|
its actually true, mountaindew junkie you accidentially told us that you watch a lot of porn....
|
I would rather look at hot asians than seeing ads like ( insert random MMO that I will never play).
But that is just me.
|
The only time I got ads for online dating websites was when i hadn't browse for a while. Usually I get ads for websites I have visited the same day.
|
I've been keeping an eye out on my ads recently, looking for interesting/weird stuff and it's come up empty. Boring stuff actually, I don't know what you're talking about. Wish I got a russian brides ad though ;]
|
TL doesn't choose the ads, and I'm pretty sure they're based on a personalized cookie, not just on the website you're currently viewing so they're not making a statement about TL itself (mine for instances are for airfares and then an advertisement to buy adwords).
If you want to change your categories or demographic information you can do it over here:
Google Adsense Preferences
I think you can opt out of targetted ads altogether even by clicking the button on the left.
|
I'm pretty happy about the ads, I'm now thinking about getting a Russian mail-order bride just based off that hot blonde. Gime gime gime! lol
|
I think the OP got exposed imo. I get a lot of shopping stuff since I am always browsing deal sites.
|

oh, cool didnt' know you can do that.
but, how it works i think it spots words on the webpages themselves, proof to my claim:
I came to tl on my other browser that keeps history - it showed generic ads ( finnish, so atleast knows where my ip is from) went to technocracy/goverment thread - loan, bank, paysafecard ads ( makes sense somewhat I guess) came to this thread ( which has thailovelinks and russianbrides in the op )-----> thailovelinks up, russianbrides right (quite sudden change don't you think?)
And no the other tab was not in redtube.
But your claim of remembering user history is probably somewhat right too because after I left this page and tried a bunch of other threads, dating ads would still pop up every now and then.

If you don't like it, adjust your google adsense settings. Google is just trying to give you what you want based on your browsing habits.

Another reason why i got NoScript on my main lol.
edit: tons of Flash games ads too. A bit less embarrassing tho. I also get Shop ads if i'm browsing something like Amazon etc...

So yeah I'm pretty sure this is a joke and whatnot, but then again perhaps I am wrong...maybe.

Apparently TL thinks I'm rich because I'm getting advertisements for Luxury suites and jewelry shops.

Even so, you ought to discuss blocking certain types of ads yourselves. A newspaper or TV channel using adsense will block "inappropriate" ads from displaying on their websites because it might cause damage to their brand and image. The argument of ads being tailored to the individual users' browsing habits is irrelevant. A majority of people will not realize that fact, and even if they do, they don't like being reminded that google adsense thinks they're losers, singles, and based on their broswing history likely to shop for russian mail order brides.
In the end it's TL's choice. Their stance right now seems to be that their users are or should be tech savvy enough to sort it out themselves. I however think that for most users the easier option will be going back to blocking ads as opposed to learning about adsense.
|
I don't see how the ads are bothersome. I don't even look at them. The only ads that bother me are the ones on other websites that pop up and cover the entire screen and have a tiny hidden button you have to press to close it.
|
I somewhat agree with Lalush, but then again if TL decides to block certain googleads it will probably eat a lot of the ad revenue?
And it isn't just a browsing habit thing, I'm fairly certain about that.
e. And like I said I don't like to use cookies or things like that. To block certain google ads would force me to allow cookies to remove obnoxious ads on TL... It's not that much of a problem to me but I certainly can relate to those who have problem with it.

I get Korean love line and Tony Robbins coaching

That is fine, and it is another topic altogether. But to make statements that say we are choosing these ads for visitors, and that we are making a statement about visitors, is way way off base.
|
Yea, apparently the 18-24 Male demographic results in a whole bunch of "inappropriate" ads in google ad sense. I mean they got the demographic right, but I really don't need to see these kinds of ads on TL. Even though it's true that TL didn't choose those ads, I think 95% of people out there won't know this and think exactly like the OP.
|
lol I think the OP made quite a fool of himself. I thought it was common knowledge by now that google adjusts ads based upon your browsing history, and perhaps the text in the page you are currently viewing?
I haven't seen a single ad like you describe. Then again, I like to use a different browser with auto-history wiping for my porn searching.
Before you leap to attacking people, stop and think about things, or ask questions first. Try asking "why am I seeing ads like X on TL?" Then someone can help you out before you jump to conclusions. Lesson learned, hopefully.
BTW: I gave you 5 stars because this blog did succeed at entertaining me.
|
Lol at OP for admitting he watches so much porn that Adsense has those kind of adverts. Also, if you're trying not to be the "stereotypical gamer" get a different ID...
|
I get really random ones, shit tons related to finance(GET THIS STOCK APP HERE/TRADE WITH THIS COMPANY), and a few dating ones.
The finance ones make no sense, the last time I expressed an interest in the stock market was NEVER, and I some how don't think the 18-24 market are the right demographic.
I find it funny more than anything else.
I do get adds for EVE though, which is great, since I play it, I make sure to click on those so that TL gets its Ad money.
|
Meanwhile I get election and business card ads. How boring
|
I just got one for nadiza pobdela ( which after googling is a park in Slovenia)
......
actually I've never gotten anything that random

Well, that pretty much indicates that all these people in this thread calling the OP a sanctimonious hypocrite incorrect. Sure, the OP's anger is misdirected, but all it proves is that he's 18-24 and male. For example, I get a mix of Korean singles ads and some tech ads. I'll admit that I surf for porn a few times a month, but that constitutes perhaps 0.1% of what I search for - almost everything else is academic or gaming related. I guess that reinforces Google stereotyping: 18-24, male, and only checks nerdy/geeky websites? More sexual ads for you!!!
Here are my ads preferences:
Arts & Entertainment - Movies
Arts & Entertainment - TV & Video
Books & Literature
Computers & Electronics
Games
Games - Computer & Video Games
Games - Computer & Video Games - Strategy Games
Games - Roleplaying Games
Intellectual Property
Legal Education
Reference - General Reference - Dictionaries & Encyclopedias
Science - Ecology & Environment
Sports
Sports - Team Sports - Basketball
Demographics - Age - 18-24
Demographics - Gender - Male
So apparently, from these, it infers that I like Korean women? I mean, I do, but it makes no sense. In addition, I've never seen the other sexualized ads, just Korean singles. I guess searching for BW (strategy games) has a strong correlation with Korean romantic interests?

In addition to your browsing history, they also consult key words on the page you're reading. For example, when I read Torte's chair thread, all the ads instantly turned into Office Depot or Staples ads. It's both convenient and creepy.
|
So, I'm confused.
OP has an internet history full of porn and dating websites >>> Google delivers him ads about dating >>> OP claims it's somehow TL's fault that he's lonely
I feel like there should be something else here... otherwise the OP is just shooting himself in the foot.
|
I don't have any google adds and i'm not running adblock.
region blocks are overpowered
|
I had the same problem and it's not just "well, stop googling for porn" because I actually disabled all the customization with Opt-outs and cookie blocking from google but apparently google then guesses your age and gender from the average visitor of the site. So the natural occurring ads on TL are these dating and bride ads.

Yeah, that's true. You can notice this especially when you go to the general forum or blogs and browse non-Starcraft threads, you get different ads (ie : investment blog got me a Goldline international inc ad to buy gold)
When I browse pure video games related pages I get either WoW ads, either Russian brides.
While I don't necessarily agree 100% with the OP, stop bashing his browsing habits...
edit : ads are really mostly based on page content :/

In fact if we can see these ads it's because at the first place TL allows google ads sense to advertise this kind of "product" here. TL could chose to not allow them but didnt. Google ads sense isnt a full package, you can chose what kind of ads you let pass on your site.
And of course, it's then based on your 'history' with the google networks. But stop pretending TL has nothing to do with it.

i forgot what the ad was but it was on the top where it shows some real nerdy acne covered face sweating shouting "NOOB' and some other wierd crap. Then it would flash to this wierd face where his teeth is all wierd and whatnot. yeahhh i got adblock because of that

There is no way Google got these ads based off my browsing habits. I spend all my time on TL in the BW forums, or on tumblr posting pictures of Super Junior. Pretty certain neither of those things have anything to do with "Looking for Kenyan Girl?" or "Dating Fat Women." I like GUYS, okay Google? GUYS. preferably cute Korean ones. T___T
|
Mine are all for business-related things, which makes sense as I am in business. I don't recall seeing any dating ads, however. I just got an ad for slimband
|
I rarely get dating ads. I mostly get ads for clothing and league of legends. It makes sense since I recently searched up a lot of stuff of tshirt printing, but I'm fairly certain advertising league of legends to people who browse LoL fansites a lot will not get a single new customer.
|
So tired of the porn BS you guys spout every time someone complains about ads.
Here are my categories from Adsense, I still get ads for Justin Bieber and mail order brides.
Computers & Electronics - Consumer Electronics - Electronic Accessories Food & Drink - Cooking & Recipes Games - Computer & Video Games Games - Computer & Video Games - Strategy Games Games - Roleplaying Games Internet & Telecom - Mobile & Wireless - Mobile Phones - Smart Phones Real Estate - Apartments & Residential Rentals Science - Biological Sciences - Anatomy Sports Sports - Team Sports - Soccer
|
I hear that reading Girl Blogs makes you get mail order bride type ads.

Google has been trying to sell me houses outside of Tokyo
That, and Korean Cupid or w/e that's called.

GG bro Listen to this guy, because he is trolling. At least thats what I hope for.
Teamliquid uses content related ads!
The reason you get google ads for asian women etc is because these are the most popular for the kind of keywords google gets from teamliquid. There are no starcraft-related ads, there are no esports related ads, but there are ads for "koreans", for "girls", for "chinese", "korean music" etc.
TL's Google ads are based on the content, and google is just taking his "best guess" for this to get the best ads possible. You'll get finance ads too because you can find discussions about money and politics here.. It all depends on what you see on the page.
Plain and simple: If you have "korean" "starcraft" "girls"
As keywords for ads, google will happily take "korean girls" rather than "starcraft girls".
For example: Right now I don't have "girl" or "girls" on the page other than in my post Ads I geT: YelloStrom ( electricity provider) AdChoices Widget.
Opening Blogs... Ads I get: Buffalo Boots Meet Women Home Fashion...
Open the sourcecode for the page (CTRL + U ) and search for "google_ad_section_", you'll be surprised(Or not)
