Ok cool, I can upgrade during the round or I can build units. Your numbers seem to show that to make it worthwhile to get the 18th upgrade I would need to build 50+ minerals worth of bunkers during that round to achieve equal damage in total. I guess I will stick with 17 as the golden figure and try to work on my placement/strategy. Thanks again. Hopefully I can post some good results soon.
Perhaps not even a graph, but what I'm saying is 17 upgrades and the rest in bunkers is highest damage. So 18 upgrades the rest is bunkers is less. Is 19 upgrades and the rest in bunkers worse than 18? and is 20 worse than 19? or is there a value later in this sequence that is actually better than a previous, for example 22 upgrades and rest in bunkers actually producing higher damage than 18,19,20 or 21 upgrades though not as high as 17, or is there only one peak in this? (we don't need to draw it) where every extra upgrade and less number of bunkers or less upgrade and more bunkers you make is just another reduction in damage? This would be interesting to know. In the mean time, 17!
It's definitely not a straight line graph, but is it only 1 peak? Can't remember name of this..
For the graph I imagined damage as the Y axis and the first point on the X axis will be every mineral in bunkers and 0 upgrades and the last point will be every mineral in upgrades and the remainder into bunkers (both obviously suck) but is there only one peak inbetween ? I don't know how to express that relationship, I hope someone does lol.
Update : This is absolutely crucial as it looks like the bunkers are misfiring once I make too many which is obviously crippling, so I'd love to know the next best ratio of upgrades/to bunkers, and the next, and the next so I can try them all.

The graph would have one peak since a greedy solution can be used to find the most optimal solution at every step. Proof by induction. QED. edit: actually the proof doesn't work. But I think it's greedy.
You can download microsoft office blue edition for a free microsoft certified version of excel. It updates normally and everything. The blog I linked should have an excel spreadsheet with the things you desire, and graphing things should be trivial. A "legend"... stop it I'm blushing
If the bunkers start misfiring you run into a confounding variable and you should just stop building bunkers at a certain point.

Confounding indeed -_-
Thanks! I'll try that out if Open Office doesn't work, I downloaded it but haven't tried it.
I'll see if I can modify your spreadsheet or the one Rut gave to see if there's a less-sub-optimal solution than 18 upgrades and the rest in bunkers.
I'll post more here in the next couple of days. Thanks again to you all for your help thus far.

I just can't do it lol -_- I can't make that many bunkers without them misfiring so I'm going to have to try something else.
At least I know where to look any time I play this sort of game in future.
I'll upload the map here in case anyone wants to try it.
