So this is slightly different but with the same spirit as the last one. I think some of the criticisms levied against the previous one are "addressed" in this one. I still love the last song I posted, but I personally value being diverse as well, within the sort of music I like to listen to.

A majority of my tracks are dubstep, and this one does have a dubstep breakdown, just a warning...

So the big things in this one compared to past efforts, since I try to continually learn new techniques, are...

1) Tuned kick drum! That's right, the 808 kick I used, I retuned to A#, the key of the song. Little things...
2) No drum loops. Not really new since I usually don't use them, but in the last one I did. I tried to create a shuffle-y beat from scratch.
3) Chopped up vocal samples. The kids love those these days.
4) Integration of some more serious sounds I use for dubstep along with some more 8-bit ones I usually use for house.
5) A very typical singer/songwriter type chord progression in the main body. It's not super obvious I don't think, but there shouldn't be a gap between "electronic dance music" and other music melody or chord wise. (Obviously lots of EDM artists have great melodies, sometimes I incorporate strong melodies, sometimes not.)

So any feedback is appreciated. This isn't a final master, but musically I'm personally satisfied. And if you like it, download / share !

What DAW are you using?

Add some chorus/unison to that eerie Pitch LFO sound for some widening beefing up IMO ^^

Ableton Live. Definitely great advice too! My approach is basically make sounds, write notes. So easy to miss subtle things like that. Thanks!

Are you using the "instruments" that come with ableton to acheive these sounds? Theyre all pretty damn solid. My biggest problem going from composer to producer is obviously making sounds. Learned alot from these two tutorials though http://www.dnbscene.com/article/88-thinking-inside-the-box-a-complete-eq-tutorial/1 http://dnbscene.com/article/1474-compress-to-impress-a-complete-compression-tutorial

Theyre not about making sounds but still super informative about producing in general.

Where did you learn to produce?

I use two different synths for the mast part, and two other synths to a lesser extent. The main ones are Native Instruments Massive and Ableton Operator. The secondary ones are Synth1 (free synth) and Ableton Analogue. But yeah, if you've got the ins and outs of Ableton's instruments, you're pretty golden. Operator especially I think is very powerful, FM synthesis is just such a comprehensive way of making sounds, and especially since it lets you change so many envelopes and make your own wave forms.

The more basic waveform sounds in this song are Operator, but some of the more formaty / vocally pitched sounds are from Massive. Those tutorials look great. For more engineering related things, written tutorials are better because they're so comprehensive. For sounds, to learn a synthesizer, just type the synthesizer's name in YouTube along with some type of sound you're looking for. For example "Massive dubstep bass sound" will give you tons of results. So will "Ableton Operator dubstep." The tutorials range from horrible to good, and don't always teach you WHY you do something, but rather just how to make one specific sound. Watch a lot of them though and you'll pick things up.

I learned from videos, forums, and friends in my hometown who also produce. And thanks again!

That's what I like to hear ! Now I just hope that plenty of people are looking for background music for MLG and are doing so in the TL blogs section.
