i have felt for a long time like the protoss pylon has a great deal of untapped potential in becoming even more interesting with regards to game mechanics.
the "power field" of pylons and the sort of "link" between pylons was cool in BW because it was a neat distinction between the races, and in SC2 it was made cooler with pylon warping and pylon drops. i havent seen what the new "gateways become canons" ability looks like and i dont like the sound of it. but it reminded me that pylons are still dotted all over the base and map and some interesting stuff could still be added to them
here are some things you can do with the pylon:
take out the terran slasher (or whatever its called). take out the new nexus recall. take out gateway canons. give the pylon some abilities. on each individual pylon you might have: - Psi Shock - costs 100 minerals, 5 second casting time, the pylon charges up then gives off AOE damage in a circle around it over a period of 5 seconds, then the pylon "goes offline" for 20 seconds. - Recall - costs 400 minerals, 5 second casting time, the pylon charges up then the targets get recalled to the pylon. The pylon explodes, and other pylons within its power field are made "offline" for 20 seconds. - Psi Shield - costs 300 minerals, 5 second casting time, the pylon charges up then gives any units or buildings within its power field +1 to armour (or +25 shields, or +2 to shield regen) for 20 seconds.
as you can see you can attach a vast variety of crazy things to pylons and balance them in many ways and actually ADD to the value of the game in a way that "stick a recall on the nexus" doesnt seem to properly pursue...

I like my ideas for overlords better
Shit Storm - cost 100 minerals 20 second casting time and the overlord sprays creep everywhere in AOE damage circle. Then for 5 seconds the overlord uncontrollably flies at the enemy main base.
Nydus Wormhole - cost 5 minerals with a 400 second casting time, the overlord charges up and the recalls a target zergling. Afterwords the overlord flies uncontrollably to the enemy main base and all units along the path are also afflicted with the wormhole curse of running into the enemy main.
Ooze Carapace - cost 300 minerals with 14 second cast time, the overlord charges up (cause thats what overlords do) and all zerg structures on ooze get invincibility layer of purple carapace for 1 second. This works well with shit storm ability, as well as the new upgrade for moving creep drop for overlords. Considering that when this spell is cast the overlord is sent uncontrollably to the enemy base.

I think giving the pylon an ability with a cooldown that sends the pylon offline for a bit is a neat concept that could be explored. You can't really make an ability cost minerals though...
Plus wasn't the pylon supposed to be upgradeable in SC2 originally? As in it became some kind of super pylon? I think the models for it exist as some doodad in the map editor.

the mineral cost thing (and my op) was after artosis (or nony or someone) said in sotg they'd happily pay 400 minerals/build an extra nexus just to have more "nexus recalls"
