NO SPOILERS IN HERE - NOT FROM ME - NOT FROM ANYONE ELSE
Hey there, I'm looking for series to watch. There are a lot of threads on teamliquid about individual TV series but I try to avoid them because of possible spoilers. I'd like you to recommend me some good series, but thats difficult if you have no information about what I like right?
So I'll give you some information or series I've watched and enjoyed so far... I wouldn't say I'm the most critical guy and the only thing I ask for is entertainment. Good acting, story & co only add up to that.
I've watched and enjoyed in no particular order.
Dexter
I'm currently watching season 2 so I'm not done yet, but I really enjoy watching Dexter. Its not all obvious from the start and I actually like the character and character development so far. The twist in the character of Dexter himself is really entertaining to watch.
The Walking Dead
Watched season 1 and since I'm a huge fan of horror, I'll also watch the second season. I can't say its the best acting I've ever seen but its a horror-series and its quiet well made with a somewhat interesting story so overall I enjoy it.
Harpers Island
If you have not seen Harpers Island and you are into a good story which will keep you thinking from start to finish, watch it. I really enjoy movies/series where its not obvious whats going on from start to finish and thats exactly what Harpers Island brings you.
Its entertaining, well made and even if I personally dislike some of it.
Stargate SG1 / Atlantis / Universe
I was a huge fan of Stargate SG1 because it always entertained me. Some of the episodes were weak while others were outstanding. I did enjoy Stargate Atlantis but I don't think it came close to the original.
I could write an essay about Stargate, but I'll leave it at that.
Now about series I do watch, but not neccessary follow the complete story...
The Big Bang Theory
I do watch it from time to time, but I mostly do watch in on the TV with episodes all mixed up, not watching from season to season. Its entertaining and a good laugh, but probably nothing I would download or buy to watch regulary.
This kind of goes for every comedy TV series such as King of Queens, How I met your mother, Everybody hates Chris etc.
House
I do watch House quiet a bit and started to watch episode after episode... and I enjoy it. Nothing more to say. Dr House is probably the next thing for me to watch from start to finish even though I already know quiet a lot of episodes!
So here I am, standing with a few seasons of Dexter and House left ... and not really a clue what I do want to watch next. Heroes? Breaking Bad? ... I really don't have a clue :-)! Do you have anything you can really recommend me without hesitation? I know you won't let me down TL!

Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad are popular with just about everybody. If you haven't seen The Wire, that's a must-watch as well.

I recommend Burn Notice, it's a brilliant show.

Buffy the Vampire slayer
I am not kidding
Its is cheesy, has action, vampires who kick ass and who get their asses reapeatedly kicked by a petite Sarah Michelle Gellar. It has alot of humor, a slight hint of horror and alot of action. Its like a guilty pleasure.
Supernatural
Supernatural, the show is somewhat horror based and is basically about 2 guys on the hunt of.....anything Supernatural, be it yeti's, werewolves, vampires or whatever hellspawn the bible and other mythologies can cook up. If you are a fan of horror youl like this alot.
now, question, foreign drama's yes/no or stick to english language drama's?
|
The Wire. best show ever. real niggas watch the Wire.
if you are looking for scifi, watch Babylon 5. it's the best scifi show i have ever seen. also watch bsg, startrek tos, startrek tng, firefly.
|
BattlethefuckStar Galactica, what? Why is this even a question?
Also, watch Deadwood.
|
Doctor Who-
I am a huge sci-fi fan, and when I read a brief synopsis of the shows concept-a time traveling doctor travels around in a telephone box, I thought it was too ridiculous to be any good. The shows current incarnation however, done amazing things to overcome the limitations in having a rather ridiculous central premise, and is an enjoyable and engaging show. I would recommend starting from the first episode of the modern incarnation.

My GF has watched the buffy series start to finish at least 10 times in the last 6 years But I do admit its addicting to watch lol.
As others have said, Game of Thrones is pretty good. Heroes sucks after the first few seasons and wouldnt recommend it personally.

Breaking bad or Californication.

UK version of Being Human (US version is based on it and I assume terrible). How to do a supernatural-themed show in a modern setting and have it believable, dark and funny. Not overdone at all.

I don't exactly know if popular is equal to good. But I think I'll give Breaking Bad a shot as a lot of people recommend it and I'm not really into the dark ages and thats what Game of Thrones is about right? I don't know anything about the wire, but I'll check it out.

Its so old, I forgot to even mention it. I did watch every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That was when I was a kid still, I did enjoy it. I also did enjoy 'Angel'. Not as much as Buffy, but still.
Supernatural I do watch from time to time and its definately something I'd watch. I guess I'll start it from the scratch and see how I like it after a season or two. What I saw so far was definately good.
I don't mind watching stuff in English, but my friend actually prefers to watch in German and since we do watch most of the stuff together I end up watching everything in German ... and again in English haha. So yeah, foreign drama's would do just fine.

The Wire (see above). I will check out Babylon 5, but I definately will dodge you on Startrek and the likes of it (BSG).. because I don't know - but it just doesn't entertain me. I can't name a reason and I don't think its trash, its well made but its just not what I like.

As you can see in my above statement, its a matter of taste. I don't like Battlestar Galactica at all. It just doesn't entertain me and I can't tell you why. Deadwood... I'll have a look at it :-)

Burn Notice - I actually found it a l lot like SG1. Good characters, some episodes are awesome and some not so much.
And I just got into Suits and Being Human. Both pretty neat.
Also: Stop watching tv and make more cooking blogs. + Show Spoiler +that pasta with the mint, bacon, etc is so good ive made it like 5 times since reading your blog

I just can't agree with Harpers Island + Show Spoiler [Spoilers inside!] +I just couldn't stop thinking "it's probably the father killing again... but that would be stupid." And it turns out that I'm right. It just killed the series for me But before that it was pretty good!

I'm not into cartoony, all purple and shiny stuff. The story may be good, but its not really attracting me. Being Human - I'll check it out.

Previously Mentioned that I agree with Burn notice - awesome spy show just don't go into it TOOOO seriously Game of Thrones - quite possibly the third best show i've ever watched (Dexter #1 Californication #2), LOTR meets Sopranos.
Not yet mentioned Califonication - Best written show... David Ducuvny (idk how to spell) just beastmodes life and fucks a ton of hot women Sons of Anarchy - Bad ass show... a little slow but soooooo much fun to watch How I met your mother - IMO the funniest show on TV right now Psyche - I really like this show the dialogue is really quick and well written Boardwalk Empire - Well done HBO show also a little slow

Good that you enjoy my cooking, but I do only cook if I have a girl over cooking with me. Its not so much fun to cook for one person and eat alone :-)! Would also cook with a friend - not that someone here gets this wrong haha.

My answer + Show Spoiler [SPOILERS INSIDE] +
I do think it was pretty clever and cool that all the small details did add up. The father got postcards with 'LIAR' on it and there were murders in Seattle that did look like Wakefield style. You had to decide if its actually her dad lying or simply not knowing if Wakefield is dead and for some parts it was really twisted.
Did her dad really believe Wakefield is dead and its somebody who fakes his murders and burrowed a false corpse to hide the fact that he doesnt know. Or did he actually know Wakefield is alive. I do _HATE_ the ending though. I'm not the guy that likes happy ends all the time, but they did really fuck me up. They did kind of fuck up _EVERY_ possible happy end, besides _1_.
haha I would so love to discuss it more with you since I have a nightshift anyways, if you want to talk just shoot me a PM :D

Entourage is pretty awesome too! If you like Californication you should love this.
Other good ones - Weeds, LOST, Breaking Bad (worth it! I read your stuff up top, but trust me its good.. on season 3 right now), Heroes (first season only), Prison Break, 24, Greek... the list goes on [:

Star Trek - The Next Genereration If you haven't watched it...

I've watched a lot of series and I must recommend "The Shield" as one of my favourites. I watched it about 2 years ago while in Uni and I still place it as my favourite (over Dexter, Prison Break, Californication, 24 etc.) 7 series so plenty to watch and personally I found it strong in all areas - acting, story and enjoyment. It's a bit gritty at times but I don't mind that and I feel it added to the series.
8.8/10 on IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286486/
Edit: Michael Chiklis's acting is amazing in this
Edit 2: just read he won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for it!
|
watch 24, 8 seasons with 24 episodes each, totally worth it imo

The IT crowd If you liked the big bang theory, you'll fall in love with this one.
Better off Ted Amazing show too
30 Rock Don't stop after the first episode, it starts slowly but it's really good too.
There is also Running Wilde, I only saw the first episode because I can't find the others, but it seems pretty funny.
edit: forgot my all time favorite: Scrubs
Aside from sitcoms:
Boardwalk empire, it's about the prohibition, and it's really good
The pacific
Band of brothers

Lost is probably the best show I've ever seen. I've never felt so immersed in anything; I would constantly analyze everything that happened, it was brilliant. It was my addiction before sc2 came out. I still watch the seasons (and clips when I'm bored) to this day, I used to hold "Lost nights" where people would come and watch episodes, and was once top 100 in trivia on facebook of like 400000 people. I like pretty much all the same things as you, so good odds you'll like it lol. Watch that show!!!
Also, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, The Pacific, Band of Brothers, and Heroes are pretty good shows. Can't really go wrong with HBO. Heard some good things about 24 and Prison Break too.

I do watch 1 season of Dexter in 3 days or less... so probably a week for a 24 season. ;-)! I don't like to stretch out series too much, because you will probably forget something etc. On the other hand, watching too much in too little time may flood your brain with information and lead to mistakes in understanding etc.

Check out Rubicon - although it was cancelled after the first season, it was pretty interesting. It's a conspiracy/spy thriller set around a widow of a recently deceased big businessman and a guy working for a private intelligence agency with government connections. Unfortunately it wasn't very well resolved T_T

Scrubs (THE feel-good-show), Californication (deeper, with a damaged main figure), Game of thrones (enjoy a trip to a dark fantasy land) are all very good series.

The West Wing Battlestar Galactica The Wire
House is awesome - quality is consistent so you should enjoy that. The Sopranos is also meant to be really good but I haven't got around to watching that yet. Mad Men is next on my list after I finish off Battlestar Galactica.
|
|
Doctor Who!!!! Community is also pretty cool - Inspector Spacetime xD
|
I think these go along pretty well with the shows already listed
Comedy: Arrested Development, Scrubs Scifi: Firefly, Battlestar Galactica Fantasy/Drama: Game of Thrones, and actually Death Note. Yeah Death Note is an anime. But its a perfect blend of Dexter-level character development with Harper's Island intelligent plot. Personally I'd recommend finding a copy with subtitles instead of dubs.

If you like Stargate SG-1, you should watch Doctor Who and Due South.
SG-1 was my favorite show for years and years and years, but Due South managed to almost one-up it. It's not sci-fi -- it's a cop show about a Mountie, his half-deaf half-wolf, and a Chicago detective -- but I find that it gives off a similar vibe of ... not taking itself too seriously. Very funny and absurd at times, and yet very, very well-written in terms of character and overall theme.
Doctor Who is Doctor Who. Not as good as SG-1 IMHO, but once again, it has some of the same feel as SG-1.
Or you can watch MacGyver. Fun, cheesy show. RDA is awesome. :D
|
If you're going to watch anime and you don't give a fuck which anime you watch; watch Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
|
I've nearly caught up on Breaking Bad and Mad Men. Both popular shows and for a good reason.
|
Wow I watched like 80% of the series listed in this thread :D
Two sitcoms that haven't been mentioned and that I enjoyed watching: My name is Earl The Inbetweeners (british sitcom)
Because you're from Germany (@Naruto), I just have to add two great German/Bavarian series: "Monaco Franze" and "Irgendwie und Sowieso" They are a little bit older, but are both totally worth it.
|
I'm someone who hates TV and TV shows. I love zombies but I thought Walking Dead S1 was meh. I just recently finished LOST S1 and a few episodes of S2 and I'm kinda getting over it.
Dexter is stupid to me. House is just another doctor show to me. MY exgf used to make me watch Grey's anatomy and its lame. Sitcoms are garbage as fuck to me. I did like curb your enthusiasm and Seinfeld though. What's a show I'd like?

I wouldn't even put Buffy as a "guilty pleasure" after season 1. During seasons 2-7, it became a damn good TV show. There are lots of masterpiece episodes like Becoming Pt. 1 and 2, Selfless, Hush, The Body, Villains, and Conversations with Dead People that are still some of my favorite TV productions ever. Joss Whedon really is a master at using seasons-long character development to craft brilliant episodes. Season 1 is just campy, monster of the week shit for the most part, though.
I would recommend Dexter season 1, Game of Thrones, Buffy, and the revival Doctor Who as some of my favorite series. There's a lot of good TV out there...
