Yep, I'm sure everyone that posts here a lot gets this feeling once in a while.
I've had to stop posting in pretty much every other forum I visit, and I blame Team Liquid entirely. I visit a hockey forum and have 3-4k posts there over the years but I went back there today after not posting for a few months and wow... I can't describe it.
It's the same as it's always been, but that has become unbearable for me.
Half the threads are people having knee jerk reactions to something (trade this player, he sucks 3 games into the season on a new team) or sensationalist crap based on reading article headlines (but not the article itself). Most thread's OP have 1 or 2 sentence in them if you're lucky, and most posts are memes and pure flaming of everyone else (put 30 fans of competing hockey teams on the same forum, watch everything blow up).
Ex : Thread title = "OMG X DESTROYS Y HUGE HIT!" Post : "Crazy!" Every other post in the thread : "youtube", "that sucked fail", etc
I wanted to discuss the hockey season but before I could I gave up on the site. A real discussion is impossible and you're lucky if your thread gets 5 posts in it before someone starts flaming you. It made me realize how much I like the moderation in general here, despite how many feel about LR threads. Trust me, these are nothing. They may get spam, but at least no one is posting "FANS/PLAYERS OF TEAM X SHOULD ALL DIE I HATE THEM ALL" because their team is losing... or even when they're winning.
In fact, posting in that kind of environment leads me to make ridiculously stupid posts as well because I get pissed off.
And so, I've thought up a genius idea.
Team Liquid needs to start renting their moderators and rules to other sites!
Picture a site you used to like but that happens to have a few hundred idiots constantly ruining the potential discussion. Now picture how it looks 1 week later after that website rents Manifesto. Amazing right?
But yeah, anyone have a hockey forum with harsh moderation and good discussion?

tbh there are a lot of bad posts on TL as well :/

I know the feeling. It makes me wonder how I ever tolerated GameFAQs. Nowadays, the only forums that I can enjoy are TeamLiquid and Smogon; the rest are simply gigantic cesspools of fuck.

I don't disagree, but there aren't enough to completely destroy any and all topics. At the very least, it's not that difficult to have a conversation (at least in blogs) without randomly being called a stupid fuck.

This blog is terrible, you should just stop posting and kill yourself or something.
I actually agree though, looking at other forums makes me sad.

just look at the ACS refuses $500,000 thread lol.

Indeed, what initially impressed me and made me want to stick around on TL was that there was actual intelligent discussion ongoing. Even in the General forum, which I was told to stray away from, people lead civil conversations/discussions.
The internet attracts a lot of idiots, due to a lot of things that I won't bother listing here, and there end up being a lot of stupid people on TL as well, but the mods do such a great job of flushing out the idiots, it doesn't matter.
edit: wow aeres smogon? I didn't know you were into pokemons! gogo pokemons~

Smogon definitely has its share of ... really bad posts...
@OP totally agree ^^

I agree!
I just can't read any forums now that I got into TL. But I like it that way, I don't think I'm missing much.

I can't post in any other forum, I really like hanging out on TL

Actually, TL should just take control of the Internet in general.
Then they could have a training program and test you needed to get to receive an internet license.
After that you could use the internet, but if you were a bad poster, you might get banned.
This seems perfect. :p

Smogon definitely has its share of ... really bad posts... I don't deny it, but I don't care, because the really bad posts are all made fun of. People there generally know what merits a good post, and those who don't get sent to Trou du Cul.

The standards I have for my internet are even higher than what is on TL.

If they pay TL $100,000 a week per mod, then I'm all for it :D

Although I do agree with what OP is saying about how the quality of team liquid is certainly greater than that of other sites. At Team Liquid you certainly get a sense of 'community'. However that's saying there aren't some bad posts here. I mean I do bad posts quite a lot but at least the mods are quite excellent. The difference between TL and other forum websites is that the moderators actually seem to read the posts of everybody and get involved unlike other websites.

Oh, there are other forums I feel are of much better quality them TL. But they are small forums with few members so there are no attention-needy children there (well, always a few but that's how it is in smaller communities; they either get shunned or banned eventually).
But TL is a huge site. In comparison to other sites of it's size, it's much better than any other I've found. The fact that it's readable is a miracle in itself. It just shows that mods actually try to keep up with it and that's more than you can say for most other sites.

I used to lurk at hfboards (even had like a hundred posts), but it's been couple of years since my last post. TL's moderating and Starcraft's awesomeness > hockey forms and hockey in general. I still try to watch NHL as often as possible though.

I used to frequent a bodybuilding/weightlifting website that billed itself as a more thoughtful approach to lifting. There was a lot of off-topic discussion and I made a well thought out post about why I posted and what I thought were the benefits in the give and take of posting.
The responses were what you'd expect from the remedial classes of an inner city high school. I sent a message to a moderator explaining how my previously rosy view of their website had changed, logged off and never returned.

I hope it's not like the NBA thread, haha.

Honestly I dont want the entire internet to be moderated at the level TL is moderated. I love TL because its a place I can go and expect to be in the company of people who are extremely well versed in internet etiquette and social convention and thats great. But alot of times If im feeling like fucking around or goofing off and just being stupid and having a good time I go and post somewhere else where there isnt any moderation to relax and not worry about any "am i gonna be looked down on for posting this" bullshit.
Also worth mentioning.. Just because a site doesnt have strict moderation and rules doesnt = the posters are terrible
Terrible posts come from terrible posters. I know plenty of sites that have ZERO moderation however the posting level is that of TL by virtue of the posters not being bad posters. I think what it really comes down to is the inherit characteristics of the average user that the site targets as its main target audience.
FOR EXAMPLE In my experience artistic related communities (even ones with zero moderation) have a much higher level of posting quality than a forum for say a video games (even ones with strict moderation)
Its not just the sites moderators that makes a great community great ( but it does help to an extent)
Its mainly the community and the target audience of that community that creates a good quality posting atmosphere.
dont get me wrong I love TL and it has a unique and diverse quality community that is often unmatched by other websites but some of you vapid TL fanboys are fucking ridiculous about putting TL on a fucking pedestal with a rabid and irrational ferocity that rivals that of apple fanboys in starbucks. Also lemonwalrus.

art forum posters are more sophisticated posters, thats a pretty stereotypical ironic artfag high brow statement. But you're probably right lol

Well, like I specified in another post, smaller communities usually are better in terms of quality and that's not really TL's fault. Also, I'm not interested in art or such things... video games related things and hockey are pretty much all the forums I visit. I have other interests but I don't follow forums for them.
Also, you can absolutely make stupid posts on TL without having to worry about being judged. At least, I do so pretty often. I don't feel I need to hold back anything (except in debates, because I hold some pretty extreme views on certain things and I know it does me no good to express them). I guess I'm just not a "goofing around" kind of guy overall. Even if I do get judged by some lurker, not really something that matters to me.
I'm not really a "vapid TL fanboy" and there are some things I don't particularly like about the site sometimes, including some of the moderation.
I made the post after, like I wrote in my OP, I realized how much better another forum I go to would be with harsher moderation to actually allow for intelligent conversations to take place.

That's pretty normal, it takes such a huge amount of time and effort from my experience on other forums, you barely have any time left to actually write any pieces :p
TL is a cut above the rest, but it's still the Internet. It is and will continue to be harder and harder to keep clean, the further it grows, and the mods are still managing to do a really good job at the time I speak. It will get harder though :/ The previous years (prior to 2010) you could have an overview of the poster pool and "know" most of them, but there are sooooo many people now that I guess it's becoming impossible.
Kudos for now though, and best of luck for what's coming !
