No, this is not a troll thread, if that's what you were hoping for.

The question above brought a tear to my eye tonight. Although a recent and frustrating PvZ loss may have helped fuel it, I had definitely felt a sadness come over me. It all started after watching Day[9]'s amazing camp fire story entitled 'The Boy and His Game', which can be found here:

+ Show Spoiler +
http://ic3d.ca/TheBoyandHisGame_day9.mp3

At the end of the story, the Boy, after winning the SC World Championships and having all of his hard work pay off, goes to his crush, and brags about what he has achieved, a new found confidence among him. The girl replies with but just two words; "What's Starcraft?". At the time, I had simply though it as a humorous and fitting ending to a beautiful tale. But after pondering it again I realized that this was true in the real world as well. This saddened me deeply. Pro gamers, for all their hard work, dedication, and passion, do not get near the recognition and respect they deserve, at least outside Korea. Enter tear here.

I had always known this. That what we here are passionate about isn't as popular as football, or hockey, and that we are frowned upon by the media and society, and that if we didn't exist, despite our recent growth, the world would more or less function exactly the same as it does now. But now, I had truly realized it, and yearned for a world that is different then it is now.

However, my love for ESPORTS has only grown through this. I feel my passion for gaming has now been justified. I have shed a tear for it, and now truly know, from the bottom of my heart, that I care about this industry, as well as the players, the teams, the coaches, casters, and anyone else who is trying to make this game, our game, or any other game, be it Halo, CS, LoL, or hell, even CoD, the thing that everyone is watching, instead of the hockey game.

With the way ESPORTS is growing, one can only be optimistic and hope for a bright future. I know I'll do my part to help spread the word.

Anyway, I'll leave it at that, so make sure to watch MLG, and have a great weekend!

FIGHTING~~!

What Starcraft are you talking about? I assume 2.

In Korea most Broodwar pro's aren't recognized on the streets except maybe the absolute top pro's and certainly not by everyone. The one evening I meet 염보성 (Sea) at suzzies birthday it didn't look like many people recognized him on the streets of Gagnam. There was one table in the restaurant where there where some guys who kept talking and then looking over at him so I think they might have recognized him. But other than that no one except the crew of teamliquid people with him seemed to know who he was.

I don't follow or have any interest in SC2 and as far as I am aware this is true of most Koreans too. So the 'Pro's' in that game are very much less famous.

One question I'd like to ask is why you spell Esports in capitals? It's not an abbreviation of anything is it?

edit:My post kind of made it sound like I'm Korean. I'm not I'm English.

Umm yeah, go figure not all people like what you like. A shit ton of people love baseball and nascar but I'll never get into it.

Listen, esports is probably growing, but not at a dramatic rate. I think people are really being mislead, but esports won't be "mainstream" for a long, long time. If some of these international events seem to be pulling more crowds it's due to korean invites, since for a long time the scenes had been divided, as opposed to a lot more people becoming sc2 fans in general.

Glad someone said it. I'm tired of the standard answer from players, personalities and casters being "Esports is growing really fast". It's not, but that's OK! There's enough interest and money in the foreign scene now to sustain it for a number of years and we have great content every day with huge expensive tournaments every few weeks.
