Battle Report (sorta) This was years in the making. I sent thousands of brave souls to their graves before ascending this guy. I'd never even gotten the amulet. Much of that time was spent on the NetHack variant, Slash'EM, but for now I'm back on the NAO server. I won't spend any time trying to teach the uninitiated what this game is all about (refer to Encyclopedia NetHackWikitticca), just know you'll spend countless hours experiencing the countless ways you can die.
Forklift, neutral male human Ranger, started his life with 17 strength and his +2 arrow stack blessed. A good roll. Not going for any conducts here - I just wanted to win. For once. I took a risk and went straight into the mines, got the luckstone without much hassle, but no magic lamps and the town priest was cross-aligned. Found a second altar on level 4, converted it and quickly received Magicbane from my god. I love that weapon, feels so broken. It made everything up to Medusa's level a breeze. Sokoban housed an amulet of reflection, and I picked up a bag of holding, and rings of free action/telecontrol somewhere around here. Spellbook of Identify simplified Forklift's life. On the downside, still no wishes. All potential quest artifact wishing was preempted by finding Demonbane, Cleaver, and Fire Brand. The single bones file in my whole run was an early game wizard. Mres cloaks are nice, but I already had the Magicbane.
Got to the castle running mithril, displacement, and helm of brilliance. No decent boots, gloves, or shirt. With the might of engraved Elbereth I obtained the wand of wishing, and silver scales from one of the armory dragons. (either gray or silver was fine by me, I had redundant sources of either extrinsic by then). Before I dropped into Gehennom, I jumped back up to Minetown and the altar. Got myself crowned and threw 30k gold at the priest to bring my protection up to 10. Genocided L's and h's because they're pricks. Reverse genocided Nurses in Sokoban to put me above 200HP. I used the wand for power gauntlets, speed boots, and a wand of death, and saved my 4 spare wishes for later.
Everything else was just navigating Gehennom mazes with wands of digging. My wish waiting gamble paid off when the RNG gifted me a hawaiian shirt, ring of conflict, and THREE amulets of lifesaving, all in the top levels of the mazes. Disenchanters tried to make Magicbane less awesome, I'll consider genociding them in the future. Somewhere along the way I accidentally dropped my whole quiver of +5 arrows. I never found them again, but that's OK because I had MAGICBANE. I bribed several of the demon princes. I'm pretty sure I could've killed them but no taking chances when I'm this close. With my kit complete, I burned my final wishes on magic markers for my stack of 50+ blank scrolls, and wand of death'd Rodney the 5 times he showed up on the ascending marathon.
I used one amulet of lifesaving, on the Plane of Air - the buffed Elementals took me by surprise. Genocided ; when I landed in Water. Conflict and wands of death/teleport kept me moving on the Astral plane - despite forgetting to put speed boots back on because I'm dumb - until I made it to the neutral altar for the offering and Demigodhood.
- Magicbane does not protect you from fountain curses - Bell of Opening does not open the Castle gate (pretty sure it does in Slash'EM) - I really should've wished for a spellbook of magic mapping, and some grease

If the high priestess of Venus is truly invisible - if there is truly no observation, no interaction - and she wields a mace which from an outside point of view is atomic to her in their mutual non-observed status - does anything happen when she actually smacks you in the noggin with the mace or is her existence dispersed from the immediate supposition?
P.S. You are a very evil person, killing species T_T. How could you kill hobbits?
Congrats! It's a pretty rewarding experience, even though I don't think I'll ever play Nethack again.
I'm pretty sure arrows at expert outdamage Magicbane on average for a Ranger btw. Magicbane is pretty wimpy for actually killing things. (Of course, since it's an athame, it's still the most broken weapon in the game.) Vorpal Blade outdamages Magicbane too, but not by much. But as you found out it doesn't really matter what weapon you use.
Its late, for a second I thought it was titled I beat NexHack. I was going to post so did I but he was cheesing me! Until I realized it wasn't about starcraft 2 :/

Invisible things murder you all the time in NetHack.
Hobbits were caught in the genocide crossfire - taking out mind flayers removes hobbits and dwarves as well. Nothing personal.

Have fun with Crawl.
What NetHack needs is version 4.0. There's a lot of things that the variants do better than the original, but each of them has their questionable design decisions. With the devteam silent for 8+ years now, can't blame anyone for moving on.
I valued Magicbane's curse protection above what Vorpal or Fire Brand could've given me. I HATE getting cursed.
Honestly the entire design direction of Nethack doesn't appeal to me beside Crawl (which has imo an excellent design philosophy). I was playing Sporkhack instead of vanilla for the last 6 months or so when I actually played Nethack before I dropped it altogether, and I think I agree with where Spork was going ... but it was still saddled with a lot of stuff I didn't like because it was still recognizably Nethack.
Also I don't think I could bring myself to play a roguelike without autoexplore any more. It's just too convenient.
---
I agree with walking around with Magicbane out, but if you're actually going to fight something it's likely ideal to swap to a different weapon just before you get in melee range (unless Magicbane is your only source of magic resistance, in which case it's harder to say what the right move is). But it's not a big deal since with AC -30 and 200 hp there's not much that can actually kill you anyway.

sick so i beat someone who beat nexhack! now to find out who nexhack beat.
Congrats myopia! Your first ascension is always memorable. =) You got luckier than me; in my first ascension (a Wizard), I had to explore all three branches before finding the right altar, hounded by the Riders all the while.
I'll get back to NetHack one of these days; for now, I'm too preoccupied with Minecraft.
So like I wanna try to play slash'em with the 3d graphics
but like i cant get it to work. I installed slashem gtk slashem and the gtk runtime environment or whatever. When i try to connect to the local executable it says Can't change directory to c:/blablabla
can someone help me out. I tried the vulture's eye but i cant stand the fact that u have to move diagonally using numpad lol.

Yeah autoexplore is sweet. Do you play DCSS online? What does playing online do for you, besides meeting other player's ghosts? I have a hard enough time dealing with my own ghosts. The whole reason I play on NAO/Pallas is bones files.
Gameguard - I've never tried those graphics, sorry man I don't know how to help. I prefer ascii or small tiles versions, where you can see the whole map floor at once.

I don't play online, though honestly I might start doing so now that my internet connection is good (when I played online a few years ago as an undergrad it wasn't worth the latency).
Other than ghosts there's nothing special about playing online.
Dude that song is sick, I only knew Talk talk for their synthpop days, seems like this album is worth checking out. (Didn't read the rest of the blog ^^)

holy shit congrats! I've never really played nethack, but my brother has and I know its tough as anything. And seems like you won even without a full moon for luck .

Full moon grants luck all right, it's just all bad.
so i copied u and picked ranger. On the first floor i drank from some well and got a wish. Being the noob that i am, i wished for a normal Magicbane. No enchant, no rustproof, no nothing... is that bad?

Fountain wishes haha, you're so lucky.
You should've wished for 'blessed fixed +2 magicbane', but that's a moot point now. Magicbane will still do what it does best - scare monsters with Elbereth. Read more about it here: http://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Elbereth.
go samurai and ezmode is how I beat nethack my first two times, once you get excalibur dual wield and magic resistance you can put your sunglasses on (or your blindfolds) and cruise through hell and back.
Congrats! Ranger is a really entertaining class too!
I just finished up another wizard and I am working on ascending with an archeologist now. There is something strangely calming bout nethack despite its inherent frustration factor.
I think it reminds me of life. Sometimes you just lose. There is nothing you can do about it but recreate another character and try again. But with perseverance you can eventually accomplish your goal.

do more nethack youtube vidssssss
You know I get a surprising amount of requests for nethack vids. If I ever get some time opened up maybe I will do another.
so i was doing amazing with my wizard, got magicbane from alter on 1st floor. Got to minetown for the first time ever (cant ever find the damn stairs lol). I was happily exploring minetown then i fainted from hunger and a measly gnome poked me to death. FML lol
btw, is there reliable ways to identify stuff without blindly eating/reading stuff? I know i can see curse/blessed from altars but thats about it.
Well there's scrolls of identification, and the spellbook of identification. The spellbook is so good - if your character can get at least basic in divination I'd make an effort to get it through magic markers or a wand of wishing.
ID'ing stuff - pets will never pick up something that is cursed, and will avoid moving onto a square with cursed items. They'll 'move reluctantly' if they do. The other method of soft identification is price identification (http://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Price_identification) , which is most useful for finding scrolls of ID, because they'll always cost around 26 gold. Make sure to #name the item class (call) when you're sure you know what type of item it is.
There's also a small trick with artifact naming (http://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Artifact_naming), which I mostly use on gray stones to see if they're luck stones.
you can dip unicorn horns into potions. if they're harmful they'll turn into juice or water.
you can drop rings into sinks and you'll see messages depending on the ring type (http://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Sink) but I never do this because you lose the ring.
Engraving with wands is the best way to ID them (http://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Wand#Engrave-identification)
thanks alot. I was trying to avoid spoilering everything but i got such a good run going right now that i want to learn some basic stuff to survive lol.
I picked a wizard, and got a fountain wish. Didnt know what to wish for so i looked at some wish priority list and just got silver dragon scale mail thinking ill find an altar and get magicbane for resistance and i still had my cloak.... But i duno if this was good? I seem to be able to cast spells with same % failure. The problem is minetown altar was cross aligned and im too scared to kill that priest... I might poly him and try it soon though.
My question for now is... why does my int keep going down? Im pretty sure i started with 17 int.. right now its 15 and i didnt fight any mind flayers. AFAIK int cant be abused? Ive been wacking stuff with my stupid +1 staff and it sucks. I really need magicbane... or magic missle/magic marker T_T. I got good defense but my offense is so bad

SDSM is a great early wish for a wizard.
are you playing NetHack or Slash'EM? Polying someone to kill them doesn't work in Slash'EM, because they just revert to normal form after losing all HP. (which is why were-monsters are stupidly broken, my #1 complaint about slash'em).
Also, trying to play NetHack without spoilers is virtually impossible. The game just doesn't lend itself to figuring things out on your own. You can try it, but know that I studied pretty much every page on the wiki in detail before I was able to ascend.
I have no idea why you would be losing intelligence. Try continually applying a unicorn horn or drinking a potion of restore ability. If you've lost any stats they'll be restored.
(*slash'em adds one other way to ID your stuff: shopkeeper services. Try paying a shopkeeper when you don't owe him anything.)
im playing nethack vanilla. I died on that last run due to.... trying to convert the minetown altar lol. I killed the priest and was offering stuff, but i got encumbered after picking up some corpse and guard captain came and raped me lol. I die to the stupiest things
Right now, I had a great run going, until i met some ghost. I was meleeing it and killed it eventually, but it turns out so many of my items got cursed. I didnt know ghosts can curse ur items .... I found out my items got cursed when magicbane became too dull to engrave... fml.. This is screwing up everything
Edit:
Lol i found minetown in a new game and it was JUST like the one i died in last time and dropped the silver dragon mail. So i got a bunch of my good stuff back. I offered until i got a gift from the god.... which turned out to be sting wtf??? it was my first gift.. i thought all wizards get magicbane for the first gift. I should have named sting fml
Ghosts can't curse your items, 99% sure your stuff got cursed by drinking from fountains. They do that form time to time and Magicbane doesn't protect your from those curses. It's the reason why I don't drink from fountains anymore.
If your character doesn't get their guaranteed sacrifice gift, that means it's already been generated somehow. If you found your own bones file, you know Magicbane has to be around somewhere. One of the gnomes or guards probly picked it up.
so I exploded my bag of holding almost right after i got it in sokoban lol. wtf I had no space so i was putting all this shit in it. one of which was a normal bag with a bunch of wands. Lost like 10 good scrolls some potions an unidentified ammy and like 6 wands. damn....
But im still alive and doing decent i guess. I wish i can find some freaking enchant weapons to get my magicbane to +2. Serioosly couldnt find any yet. Right now i dont even have any good magic, Im playing like a warrior with +0 magic bane powergloves and dragon armor. .. . .
ok so im chaotic elf wizard so ive been getting really shitty artifacts from offering. I got sting orcrist and werebane.... along with magicbane. I didnt get any wish so far despite sitting on all thrones and drinking all fountains dry lol. When i finally get a wish I wanted the master key for damage reduction, but seeing as there is already 5 artifacts in the game counting the eye is it a good idea? whats the chance to get the wish? Should i just wish for other useful things? Any suggestions? Right now im using +2magic bane, +0 power gaunts, +4 silver dragon mail, +0 speed boots, +0 helm that gives you clarvoiyance. The eye is seriously amazing, i can spam all spells now mp regen is so fast haha. Is power gauntlets preferable to dex gloves? I really like the carry capacity the gloves are giving me not to mension melee potential. But if on lower floors, monsters are so strong i cant melee them, then i guess dex gloves would be better?
Is helm of brilliance worth it for a mage? Can it push my int/wis over the max of 20?
Oh and since i got werebane which unrestricts sabers, would it be good to wish for grayswandir? But i already got expert on daggers, so maybe it would be a waste to max 2 weapon trees. Can i bring it to expert if it gets unrestricted?
so im stuck in the Rogue level. I think something is wrong with my nethack. I cannot see any walls or anything on this map. The only indications are like food that i drop, ocasional monsters, and gold that i can see using detect treasure. How the hell can i find the stairs up.... cus for down i just dug down but i gota go up to get my stuff from minetown
Chance of wishing for an artifact - http://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Wishing#Artifact_wishing. Very slim if you've found that many. Chaotic gift artifacts are mostly garbage (you get the best one by being crowned) and wizards don't melee that much in the late game anyways, so in the future I wouldn't bother with it as a wizard. Save your artifact slots for wishes.
You'll want a robe. They give magic cancellation 3, take your cloak slot, and boost your spellcasting abilities. Priests have a good chance of carrying one though, you should be able to find one without wasting a wish.
Helm of brilliance will raise any char's stats above their max.
Power gauntlets are always metal, so they interfere with spellcasting. Dex gloves don't BUT with a robe and max attributes you may be able to get 0% failure rate on your spells anyways.
Getting a skill unrestricted only allows you to bring it to basic.
If you don't have these, they may be good to wish for: blessed greased bag of holding blessed fixed greased +2 robe blessed fixed greased +2 helm of brilliance amulet of life saving ring of conflict ring of free action ring of levitation magic marker

Yeah the rogue level bugs out on me too. You could just levelport with the eye.
oh, I have almost all the rings. I was polypiling a bit in minetown. Actually i got ridiculously strong early cause of my bones file lol. I exploded my bag with so many scrolls so im low on enchantment... I somehow found 2 more bags of holding though.
I was planning on using cloak of protection, robe would be the better choice? I got 3% spell failure with no robe and maxed attack spells. But then, i think the % is bugged and it fails more than that lol.
I guess robe + power gloves... or COP with dex gloves might me good combos? What about displacement?
What do you think is better helm of brilliance or the Cornthean (sp? lol)
Robe is better than a cloak of protection, since the "protection" just implies magic cancellation 3 (and maybe 1 extra AC?). Robe is better. The only cloak worth wearing over a robe lategame is a cloak of magic resistance (displacement is probably the best early on though, but lategame it only gives MC2 which is bad).
If you don't have any ideas for wishes, save them. You can wish for a cockatrice corpse (unless you've genocided them) if you get into a bad situation. One-hit-kills the vast majority of enemies in the game. Otherwise magic markers are always good unless you managed to blow up all your blank scrolls too. Or jumping boots, since they're crazy overpowered (the only "balancing" factor really is that they're annoying to use) ... though I guess if you have speed boots jumping is maybe not a big enough improvement to be worth a wish.
Helm of brilliance is the best helm unless you think helm of telepathy is better (which in some cases it probably is).
Just cleared out castle level. Couple floors ago, I exploded a fireball on myself and lost 2 blessed genocide scrolls that i was saving (also burning my helm and COP in the process) ... damn im making so many mistakes but overall still in good shape somehow. I think i still have 1 or 2 blessed genocide and 2 cursed genocide. There was some nurse that was refusing to leave my minetown lol but due to being naked for her heals, I lost 2 lvls to some random wraith .... Also I must have dried out like 20 fountains without a single good outcome from it. I got mass cursed from fountain 2 times which almost got me killed once when my blessed bag of holding got cursed (made me stressed and i didnt know what became so heavy all of a sudden).
So I can finally get a wish. I guess ill just wish for helm of brilliance and save the rest. I have one blessed charging scroll so no need to waste a wish for taht.
Also i tried to erodeproof something I was wearing and endedup removing the proof from my speedboots. I thought it was blessed scroll of destroy armor lol. I seriosuly need enchant armor scrolls, god i have so many scrolls but none of these. Polypiling didnt give me any also.
Edit: Oh i didnt know polying spellbooks made them unreadable for refreshing ur spells. Oh god, Im losing all my early spells with no way to learn it again
you know the likelihood of getting a wish from a fountain is based on your dungeon level, right? (http://nethackwiki.com/wiki/Fountain#Magic_Fountains). If you're below level 19, it's 100% impossible.
Getting most of your inventory cursed is just as likely as summoning a water demon - which, should you get a demon, it's very unlikely they'll give a wish. I never drink from fountains, it's infinitely safer to #dip some item you don't really care about.
i know its a slim chance but its hard for me to pass up, especially in the early game. And later on, the demon and snakes are no prob. Mass curse is taken care of by one spell or scroll. Blessing everything again is a pain though.
Ive actually got 2 wishes so far from the first 5 floors. Both times i died shortly after because I didnt know wtf i was doing. But yea, water mocasins and angry water demon got me killed so many times, but those chars were just starting out so it doesnt matter.
Anyways... right now my biggest problem is that Ive spent so much time doing random shit and farming and micromanaging my damn inventory that Im losing all my spells lol. I literally lost 70% of it. I dont even have magic missle any more T_T... I didnt know how spellbooks worked so i read them once and polied all of it in the early game. So i had a bunch of spells that i couldnt use due to being low lvl. Now im high enough to use them but im losing them all lol. I will probably wish for magic markers next time i play on this guy.

Why do you need a flute? You've already cleared the castle, so just go blow up the drawbridge with a wand of striking or force bolt.
(The only real use for instruments is to just kill everything in the castle via drawbridge-crushing, except for their wand-like effects.)
Grrr, this got me back into Nethack, I never beat it, and I'm in the middle of a decent run, for me. BoH from Sokoban, Mjolnir and Excalibur for weapons, GoP for Mjolnir to be my ranged weapon, SDSM, total of -11 AC, Luckstone from mines, and I haven't even made it to the quest level yet.
And there's an epic thunderstorm outside. I'm terrified of loading my save.
Polymorph spell is so imba lol. You can poly all scrolls/potoins u find for something u need. And rings into something u can eat.. too bad my game all the good edible rings are non metal. I got like 5 ammy of life saving lol.
Im crusing through gehemon right now. Went down to the last floor but i missed the invocation stuff cus i couldnt find the tower and vlad's place lol. 2 big mistakes though. I thought umber hulks can dig through all walls but that wasnt the case. So i wished for magic whistle and reverse genocided them to try and make a path in nonteleport maps to ease my ascention. It turns out they cant break non diggable walls...
One time i got weak in gehemon and was lazy so i prayed, and my +5 robe got disintegrated. Wasted another wish for a new robe cus i didnt feel like poly piling, 2 wishes left now lol. Im pretty much invincible right now, I totally overprepared but I just want to make sure i ascend.
On a side note, I started a new game with a monk, and started quaffing fountains, got a wish on first floor, wished for orb of fate at lvl 1, got blasted and died lol
So JingleHell the Human Valkyrie is preparing herself to assault the dreaded Medusa. She has her mighty longsword Excalibur ready to slay any beast in close combat, and the dreaded warhammer Mjollnir for anything needing to be slain at a distance.
Uhm, sadly I've never gotten this far in the game, since I used to be pretty impatient when I was playing as a kid. (Still am, really, but better.) Any suggestions aside from having a blindfold before thwacking her? Oh, and how do I reduce my blasted weight? I'm not really carrying around that much stuff that's actually heavy, but even with my bag of holding and gauntlets of power, I'm running pretty close to burdened.
man gameguard if you win after playing this game for a week it makes me look really bad
Medusa is useless if you have reflection. No blindfold needed. Is your BoH blessed? Are you carrying a ton of gold? Gold is useless by this point in vanilla nethack, as long as you've bought 9+ protection. Ditch it all. Spellbooks are also really heavy, so stash them and give them another read before your start the ascension run.
Oh. The 24k gold I have on me isn't important? I've never gotten far enough to know that... Don't have any spellbooks on me, although I haven't even messed with learning any really, since I'm playing a valkyrie.
My BoH is just uncursed. Hmm. I think my gold and my 20ish food rations may be eating up a decent portion of my carrying capacity. And maybe my huge stock of potions and scrolls.
When you've had so many YASD's in your life, it's easy to packrat.
Holy hell, Mjollnir+GoP is godly for this castle drawbridge. -22 AC, with resistance and reflection, just hit lvl 14, cleared the mazes above the castle properly, still have a wish left on my old wand of wishing and I'm about to get the castle one... I might actually beat this bloody game finally. After something like 15 years of playing it off and on.
Damn game... my dad was playing it back when he was in college and hasn't beat it either.
Bah. Score:1,115,366. Valk, Lawful, Wizard's Tower Treasure Zoo, Petrified by a frigging sergeant waving around a cockatrice corpse. Ran out of Lizard.
Think I'ma start playing on the NAO server now that I've got a good run under my belt.
Particularly the curses interface. 100% slicker than your standard tty.
Also, I give up on DCSS. I've been playing it on and off for a year - I just don't find it half as fun as NetHack. Back to Slash'EM for me - gonna ascend a lawful human flame mage next.

To be fair, I got a +2 silver dragon scale mail from a bones file of minetown lol.
I am extremely impatient, so i very well could die in the ascension. I dont really know what to expect from astral plane exept that riders are supose to be scary.
I kind of put my game on hold, due to exams. I was playing some new chars on and off for breaks and die miserably every time to stupid shit haha. I guess i got too used to my uber mage taht can literally melee all the demon princes (havnt fought demogorgon though) and minotars
Oh im kind of regretting killing all the aligned priests in my game lol. Unless one spawns in wizards or vlad's tower, I guess all my 50k gold in the stash is useless after all. I have 0 protection from gods lol. I got a -1 or something from eating ring of protection though heh
If you have jumping boots and wands of teleportation you don't even have to fight the riders (zap the wand at the stuff around you, then jump through the gaps ... don't actually zap it at the riders though!). If you have a wish left you can cheese yourself to victory at at least 2/3 of the altars by wishing for a Helm of Opposite Alignment (works for any of them if you're neutral and have a couple turns, but you can't become neutral if you're lawful/chaotic to begin with).
Wishing for a c corpse is pretty strong too, lets you just one-hit-kill most enemies in Astral (not the riders though). Unless you've genocided c, in which case you can't get a corpse.
I've only died once after getting past the castle, and that was to being really silly and taking off my gauntlets and doing stuff I had no real reason to need to do anyway.
Air is actually more dangerous than Astral most of the time imo, since it's harder to dodge Air Elementals, especially since you can't jump there.
tried protection racquet with healer. Got to minetown with buff dog and i was lvl 2. Found a magic lamp at the shop, did some credit cloning. Then i opened the last closet which i didnt clear out yet. A measly gnome comes out and zaps me with wand of striking for 37 damage. Wat gg

hooray for randomized enemy equipment! iv been killed by gnomes with wand of death and other such nonsense. Reminds me of how brutal this game is, even if you know every nook and cranny of the game you can still get killed by any number of things.
so im fucked. Rogue level bugs out on me. I cant see any walls or stairs or almost anything for that matter. Im trying to ascend so no branchport possible. I should have kept a cursed gain level potion or soemthing... arg..
wait drinking cursed gain lvl potion counts as levelporting? Can i do it while ascending? I can wish for one.. but it might not work... uhh
OK I FIXED It. Disabled IBMgraphics on options ... onward to ascension !

You were level 30 with a maximum of 371 hit points when you ascended.
First altar was aligned so it was cool. Only trouble i had was with pestilence when i accidentally casted a forgotten spell making me confused then he cornered me and kept hitting me. I had to spam unicorn horn which was scary. Also, all my 17 potions of full healing turned into water in the plains of water lol.
I destroyed my +5 SDSM twice by forgetting to take it off while enchanting other stuff. I lost my +5 robe by praying in hell. I had 2 unused wishes at the end and like 6 life saving ammys. It took me ridiculously long to find the portal in planes of water cus it kept moving
NetHack isn't all too hard if you do a lot of research in it so you know what happens. I basically read about all the tricks and then did my first (and only) ascension a couple weeks after starting, then haven't played much since. Doing runs blind or partially blind is extremely hard, so if you were in that situation I applaud you.
One cute thing you can do on the Astral Plane if you have a wish, is wish for a blessed partly eaten chickatrice corpse and wield it. Everything gets stoned in one hit. The partly eaten part is to reduce the weight.
For those of you who haven't ascended -- You're probably going to be vastly overprepared for the above earth levels the first time you play, and as someone said before you're going to packrat a lot. I definitely did both of these. It's not a bad thing, but the elemental planes are not too difficult when you're that overprepared.
