It is a really slow Friday.... The day right before the long weekend....
Not much going on at work and for some reason skype is pretty empty today..

As everyone knows, I have an all girls team and I'm also part of NA ESL. You can ask me questions regarding that or just w/e comes to your mind.

Q: I think it's generally true that the stigma for playing video games competitively is stronger for women than it is for men. Western societal values certainly decrease the number of women who consider playing competitive games like Starcraft 2 in the first place. However, it's also fairly well-known that there are many male gamers who are, well, sexist pigs. How much of the lack of female gamers (across the all ranges of skill) in Sc2 do you think is a result of society discouraging them, and how much of it is a result of the gamer community driving them away?

EDIT: changed "'a lot of male gamers" to "there are many male gamers who" since the first seemed a little over-the-top. I didn't actually run a poll or anything so I thought I'd word it more vaguely.

EDIT AGAIN: also I just realized this is kind of a loaded question. I can ask a different one if you'd prefer that lol I don't mean to open a whole new can of worms, so to speak.
When you stare into the iCCup, the iCCup stares back.

I've got a random one:

I DL'd this big music pack, was listening to it and this song came on. I was all "wtf" but it was kinda funny, so the question is:

What's your reaction to this song, and how would you react if someone important in your life (you pick, parents BF grandparents w/e) recognized it immediately and started singng along if they happened upon you listening to it out loud?

@Blazinghand:

In my opinion, I don't think society is big factor. SC2 is a RTS game and the average girl wouldn't be interested in that. I noticed most of the female players enjoys games like Mario, puzzles and such. Consoles like Wii are pretty popular. SC2 is more than a pretty cool looking game and it requires a lot of thinking and technical knowledge of the game.
However, the small percentages of girls that do enjoy SC2 are driving away by the community. You need to have thick skin in this community. You are either going to be on the spotlight and get trolled/harassed/judge or stay as low profile as possible. Both options are non sense.

PD: no worries

How do you feel about some of the top women figures currently in the BW/SC2 scene. For example, SlayersEve is currently on the team simply because she is a girl. In my opinion, I really dislike the fact she is brought to the GSTL games. They have stated previously she was recruited based off of her looks and the fact she simply plays the game. They have no intention of playing her when she sits with the team is GSTL games, being that she is a diamond level player. She seems to be a sideshow to me for everyone to look at. Do you find this offensive and degrading to women who can truly compete and not be there because of superficial reasons?

This makes me question why they had Torch sitting with Startale even though they never played him. Or introduced him for that matter.

@CrashD a baller? I guess lol. Super Hero? mmm Xmen- phoenix
@DisAstro sure!
@Carthac I don't find it offensive. Perhaps she was brought to the team because she is a girl and brings more free advertising to the team, or perhaps it was only because they truly saw a potential in her. It is only a matter of time
Each individual is responsible for their own decisions. I don’t judge nor do I feel offended if another female gamer makes inappropriate decisions.
There will be always someone doing the wrong thing in the wrong place and giving a poor image to the world. I honestly don’t get stressed about it

What are your thoughts on females making threads for attention? Do you feel it's a valid way for women to break into ESPORTS?

@Serejai: 1) Can you give me an example?
2) Women were already into e-sports for a long time. This is not big news. Saying that you are a girl and not a guy is not meant to get attention but to let the community know that there is no more hiding. Girls & boys play sc2, nothing new there. We do get trolled but it is getting better. If you don’t say it, people will find out and then the story will repeat itself lol

....It is not rocket science.

Well, it seems that there is a trend of female gamers using their gender to gain attention in the ESPORTS industry faster than their actual talents would have done so otherwise. Like, people we shouldn't know about because they haven't really accomplished anything... but we do know about them because they make blogs or forum threads about how they're female.

I mean, take yourself as an example (hypothetical, of course). Clearly we all know who you are already as you're a very prominent figure in the StarCraft II scene. However, even if you weren't you could simply make a blog and mention that you're female and you'd probably become famous overnight.

It's no secret that a female gamer announcing she's a female will instantly boost her followers/viewers/etc. Do you think this is fair practice? Or, as a female gamer yourself, do you feel this is a step backwards and causes people to take women less seriously?

True. I agreed
If you post any topic with the title "Girl" in it, you will get over 3k hits in less than an hr. Sad fact

I personally hate that. I got 0 respect for girls that purposely do that but again, that's the minority.
And yes, it is a step backward and leave a really bad image to the rest of us.
However, between tha or being trolled because you play, I honestly don't know whats worse. The last option is just stay as low profile as possible. Most of us learn how to pretend to be a guy so we don't get noticed. sad sad

I understand that this might not have been your intention, but I do hope you can understand the inference; that this combination might be seen to be a little disingenuous?

I do apologise if this seems a little tactless, but it's better not to befuddle these things with guile.

@Sirjolt I get what your saying but think about it, did you come to this post because she is a girl. When you selected this post all you saw was "FFA Friday: Ask me anything". The people they are referring to are the ones that you see all the time with streamers for example is that the description says "GIRL GAMER HERE" ect and can be seen from the stream list page. Something that actually sets the term as a source of attraction to catch your eye/interest. In this ama she gave you a bit of background to give you an idea of who she is so you can ask her worthwhile questions. i think that makes a fair bit of sense.
Hope to hear what you think ^_^

@SirJolt : No worries, it is a valid question.
Supporting the girl community is different from advertising that you are a girl for attention
I used to be a pro gamer, so I know what they have to go through.

Like I said before on my teams topic
"We are not advertising that we are girls, we are advertising that girls do play games and we can be pretty good at it"

And then there are topics like
Women in SC vs Men in SC

Both parties are right, but you can't generalize like that. ^^

My friend first impression of sc2 community was :" is everyone an *ss in this game?" ( she just said "hi ^.^" in a popular NA channel )

Yeah they don't advertise things like HI IM A GIRL I mean when have you ever seen someone like Navi (their captain) make any kind of post for attention? Never. And I don't even know half the people on their team so they don't seem to be the type out for attention.

Yeah the only post our team made was to let ppl know we existed and try and recruit a few new ones - most of the girls didnt want to really be known, myself included... I'm only a gold level terran... demoted from platinum recently - how embarassing - but we do all have a passion for eSports and we do love things made of stacraft 2 - and so our team is basically there to provide the foundations, and non-threatening/trolling environment - for players that want to - get better at the game... not get attention, or w/e else ppl think is on the adgenda :p
