Recently however, I've been re-embracing my procrastinating tendencies by trying out structured procrastination again.
Structured procrastination is when you have a lot of things to do, and you just do the easy stuff first.
Like if you want to write a book and publish it, but you find it's too much work, so instead you go and write a blog on your favorite internet forum. Then...well you've accomplished one task! It may not have been the task you wanted to do, but at least you'll have done something.
Anyways, some guy from Stanford Gave it his seal of approval:
So that means you have to try it
The most perfect situation for structured procrastination that I ever had was when my wife and I served as Resident Fellows in Soto House, a Stanford dormitory. In the evening, faced with papers to grade, lectures to prepare, committee work to be done, I would leave our cottage next to the dorm and go over to the lounge and play ping-pong with the residents, or talk over things with them in their rooms, or just sit there and read the paper. I got a reputation for being a terrific Resident Fellow, and one of the rare profs on campus who spent time with undergraduates and got to know them. What a set up: play ping pong as a way of not doing more important things, and get a reputation as Mr. Chips.
~Professor John Perry
I'm aware that structured procrastination has its drawbacks, but it's better than going online thinking "I'm gonna get stuff done today", and getting nothing done. The easiest drawback I can think of is that you'll always have one task that you never get done. Like say studying for the test that determines whether you pass a course.
Anyways, if I waste any more time and don't get my app development project started I'll probably... I don't have anything else I want to do.
I think there's some promise in trying not to fight my habitual procrastinating tendencies, but rather using them to help me. How about you TL, how do you fight the need to internet when you don't have to?
PS: Anyone else who needs help wanna do a daily accountability email? Like tell each other what we wanna get done each day and then check back the next day sorta thing?
