Am I mistaken or aren't macbook pro laptops supposed to come with a boot disc of some kind? I want to do a hard drive replacement but my laptop didn't come with a boot disc. Is it supposed to?

How am I supposed to do this now? Anyone savvy with macs?

What do you mean a boot disc? Like the operating system?

Yeah, something I can use to re-install OSX when I swap out hard drives. I can't just download lion osx either since I didn't buy it from the app store, it came with the laptop. Everything I google tells me to re-download OSX and then burn it to disc, but that's not an option for me.

My macbook came with a disk in the original box - do you still have it? I remember it was kind of hidden, but it was definitely there.

Upon further inspection, I found what appears to be a blank sleeve in nice plastic wrapping, unopened. I'm assuming there was supposed to be a disc in here.

That blank sleeve should have a disc in there. If not go contact the customer support for another one.

I did a bunch of calls and I'm guessing customer support is going to be able to send me one. The problem is that I move into the dorms tomorrow, and I was hoping I could do swap out the HD and RAM upgrades before I moved in.

I'm going to have torrent...

It's funny how several times I've tried to do things legally but found that even when I pay for things companies like m$ and apple manage to make it less convenient. I don't mind being a good consumer if they don't fuck me over.

There's for sure no disc, I have an empty CD sleeve still sealed. For you very helpful skeptics, I know that It's empty because I can fold and crumple it up in hand.

It's more intuitive to not have flaps and to let people see the disks just as they try to read the manuals.

If there is a mac store anywhere in your area, you can always just walk in and they'll give you a new CD, I'm sure. Otherwise gl, lol. That sucks.

The new MacBook Pro with Lion (OS X 10.7) do not come with discs any more. They have a recovery partition, and you can use an utility to create an external recovery disk on a usb drive and (I assume) use that to reinstall Lion on the new hard drive you're swapping in.

http://www.apple.com/macosx/recovery/
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848

Edit: If you look at the first link, apparently they have a new feature called Internet Recovery, which says if you install a hard drive without OS X Lion on it, and your computer has an internet connection, it can load OS X on it over the internet.

One more link with a little more information on each type of recovery option:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718

Here's a link to Apple Manuals, with instructions on how to open up your MBP to swap out the hard drive and RAM and instructions on how to use the recovery functions:

The info here could be helpful. Apple released an utility that let's you make a recovery perdition in external media:
