I was recently considering the idea of being a pro gamer, and how cool it would be. It will also be very hard, so I am just going to write up what I am doing, and the progress I have made in here. Much like Hyungjoon in episode 1, I am a scrub (bronze league lol), so I am going to abuse all the resources available to me:
- Liquipedia
- Day9
- (hopefully) You - please give tips, or things I can work on, as I can upload some replays for you to watch and criticise
(Unfortunately, I can't walk into the oGs training house and befriend pro gamers, so I'll need your help.)
Week #1: Bronze Rank (will update next sunday)
Replays will be in the spoilers.
TvT
I have many problems with the TvT matchup, I usually go for a mix of marines/marauders/tanks/medivacs, and when I set up contains, even if I macro, they just kill me, so my contains need some work.
+ Show Spoiler +- http://sc2rep.net/replays/starcraft-2-replay-t-che-vs-t-cloudfury-nerazim-crypt-08-15-2011 - My contain that went wrong
TvP
My TvP is not bad, I usually open with the 3rax, as it is simple, and a good aggressive opening.
+ Show Spoiler +- http://sc2rep.net/replays/starcraft-2-replay-t-cloudfury-vs-p-rayl-antiga-shipyard-08-15-2011 - A
successful TvP, where I open with 3rax and win.
TvZ
My worst matchup would probably be TvZ, once they get mutas. They can easily kill turrets, he forces my marines to stim a lot, as they are fast, and they can magic box my Thors, so I am unsure how to deal with them.
+ Show Spoiler +- http://sc2rep.net/replays/starcraft-2-replay-t-cloudfury-vs-z-escape-shakuras-plateau-08-15-2011 - A hellion opening that went wrong due to his baneling busting antics.
Please comment with advice, tips, and things I did wrong. Thanks. <3

heres advice for a bronze player.
worry about mechanics more than creativity/builds. have a solid build in mind, have like 4-5 checkpoints for your build and focus on constantly producing units. the thing is at bronze you can literally produce only marines and scvs and win by managing resources and constantly producing.
after that worry about builds counters etc. and when you study replays, you study them you don't watch them. ask why the pros do so and so, not they do so and so so you should too.
people worry about builds, countering, tactics but that's just from a watcher perspective. player skill and mechanics are left out on a lot of peoples minds when it comes to improving

Reality check- Hyungjoon would have been atleast Diamond level. So, no scrub.

I don't know how much of Hyungjoon's skill was fake / just for show, but iirc in episode 1 the only thing he knew how to do in Starcraft was 4 pool or something.
So yeah, I'd put that in the bronze league category (even if it was Brood War ).

What should I look at when watching replays?

Things like that are obvious, but why should I be looking for, in order to improve?

Production tab. Things like that are obvious, but why should I be looking for, in order to improve? Perhaps obvious, but probably most important. All important questions are answered through production:
Are you constantly producing scvs? are you constantly producing units? Are you queuing up too many units? Are you starting to drop an expo? Are you keeping your money low by making new unit building structures to meet your new base saturation? Are you upgrading?
The only tab you really need open for an entire replay is production to see why things were started late or not.

So beyond the focusing on mechanics that people are inevitably going to tell you to do (for good reason, this is what you need to improve the most):
TvT: Mech is easier to execute and better in the current metagame.
TvP: 3rax is pretty allin if you don't do damage or get a rock solid contain up on him, you can 2rax and still put on pressure while getting an expo up. If you want to work on mechanics, you need to put yourself in more difficult situations in order to exercise them, and doing one basey builds is not the way to do that.
TvZ: Watch MVP vs. DRG on Xelnaga caverns from the most recent MLG about how to deal with mutalisks. MVP completely shut down all forms of harass while still getting an army up to push. Really impressive play from him, though the map is pretty terran favored in that MU.

I just lost doing the 3rax, the guy pushed out when he had 2colossi. I think he went 2gate robo. It was effective, as I didn't have vikings out.
I will do at some point, have you got a link to it? The MLG site is horribly laid out, at least it was the last time I tried to find a replay.

I hate to be a cynic, so for the record I do wish you luck and hope you succeed with your goal.
But to be realistic, we really can't give you substantial advice that will launch you easily into NA Grandmasters. Sure we can give you suggestions that will improve your play, but it will take determination and dedication (read: years of hard fucking work) if you're coming up from bronze league. The guys that are doing well today are the guys that have enough talent that they've never been in bronze league.
[edit]Also rather than just leave it at that, I would recommend trying to find a tight-knit group of guys that you can practice if you want to improve quickly.
