I started playing sc2 at the beggining of the beta and used to play for about an hour a day. I got fairly good and at my peak I was in the top 300 random's in north america (I know there isn't too much compition in random for the top ). Then in January my gf broke up with me, I hit a slump and stopped playing and switched to League of Legends.
Recently I missed the deep skill pool of sc2 and desided to spend some time on it. For all the team matchups it was just like old times. On the other hand 1v1 has changed a lot in half a year and I went from taking on masters to having trouble winning against lower diamonds. I want to get back on 1v1s but can not seem to get caught up on the game. Is there a timeline of trends and changes of the way the game is played posted anywhere so I can see exactly how its changed since I left?

You probably are not that far behind from when you stopped playing. Over time each league will get more skilled as people play the game more. So you may have stayed at the same skill level, maybe dropping a bit from inactivity, but the players around you have got better and when you came back you drop down.

Just get back into things. Don't worry about your position on ladder until you get some of that rust out of your play. But if you've been gone for half a year with absolutely no sc2 in that time, you should just look at the patch notes and play for a while, while getting used to the changes. Just remember, try not to care about the ladder.

@mattyHs I checked my apm and it is still around 110 like it used to be but I feel like my desition making is much worse now. I can't seem to predict what the oppenents are going for and seem to have trouble keeping my cool.
@GigaFlop It is good advice but it is really hard to take. I used to worry about my possition so much and no mater how much I tell myself my points don't actually mater I still know its how others can scan my skillset. I find I have a big problem playing games after the bonus pool is dry and am sad I missed using all my season two pool.

probably mostly about getting updated builds and refining them

lol I'm in the exact same position. I did not have time to play in season 2, I was pretty high in diamond and I could take on most of the diamond players I met.. After I got home at the end of season 2, I was getting completely destroyed by everyone - all the way down to gold players.. Emberrasing.. screwed up my MMR so much I got demoted to platinum in Season 3..
Sucks donkeyballs, but I guess I'm no better than plat any longer.

Sounds like you just need to play more. Analyse replays and see what current trends are. I did have trouble keeping my cool when i would lose to stuff like roach allin but now i dont care about my record and just brave it through the bad games untill i get a good one

morale? gfs are bad.
Just kidding. Yeah i have the same situation. I didnt play for a month and got demoted

Here's a very quick rundown of the typical unit compositions for each match-up:
TvT: Mostly marine, tank, medivac, viking. Some go mech and replace marines with helions and a few thors (some times). TvP: Marine/marauder/medivac/viking/ghost for T. Gateway units (some times HT, depending on player) and colossi TvZ: Mostly marine, tank, medivac, thors, and vikings if broodlords are out. Some T's go mech and replace marines with helions. Z either goes lings/banelings/muta or (more recently) will go infestor/ling (see Destiny's stream). Some times Z will add in roaches if the T is going mech. PvP: Four gates are still somewhat popular. Some will go 3gate/robo and eventually tech up to colossi/gateway deathball. PvZ: P will go with typical gateway/colossi deathball, usually. Forge fast expand is still popular. Lots of P's also open with stargate (usually 1 voidray with some phoenix) followed up by a 6gate +2attack push. Z still sometimes goes for roach/hydra but it seems that roach/ling/infestor is more popular now. Some Z's also go ling/muta in this match-up. Also baneling drops from overlords are somewhat popular in this MU. ZvZ: Mostly roach/infestor with early speedling play.

I poke into SC2 once every 2-3months and get placed into Diamond and win about half my games. Just get some half decent macro, don't even need to know all the units;d
The changing cannot be too bad, I guess.

In the past, did you play relying on game mechanics or did you play with specific builds?
I've always been the screw around in masters with random builds and unit mixes (with decent mechanics) and after not playing for 2 months I'm still where I was before...
Perhaps go to tl threads and look at people complain and do those builds?
Remember, its always about having fun!

This is exactly what I am afraid of happening. The coward in me just wants to stay in diamond, lol. I'm thinking of just practicing in 2v2 using macro builds until I can comfortably compete in diamond there before making the plunge into 1v1.

It really depended on the matchup. With TvT I'd rush banshies and use them to contain while i expand and try to starve them out. In TvP I'd just do the boring MMM with vikings. In TvZ I would using timing attacks. With PvP I would try to 4gate blink stalker. PvT I'd go two base robo. PvZ I never really had a perfered build and just tryed to figure out what they were going. As zerg I would always try to macro using roaches against Z and P and mutaling against T.
So I guess usually specific builds but often the other.
