Does QIP not support other protocols?

Till the Facebook boom which didn't happen here only until about one year ago, ICQ was the messenger that 95 % of internet users were using here. Now that everyone has FB it's not that important thing anymore, yet I always prefer talking via this rather than talking on the FB chat, which is just awful. As for other protocols - I had to use MSN for a year and I find ICQ infinately better (or the qip version of icq, without stupid shiny things). btw, this says, ICQ had 40-50 million active users in 2010, that's not dead in my book

There are zero new users for ICQ now, and only a small fraction of its old users still use it. Nowadays it's more of a split between various protocols, but it doesn't matter much anymore because you have good IM clients which support every protocol out there.
