So as many of you might already know from my other blogs, I've been accepted to study abroad in Korea, at Korea University Sejong campus.

Everything's coming together, and I'm getting SUPER excited.
My visa came in, that's set and done (though I might need to get an extension cuz the period of sojourn is only 4 months T.T)
All my KU paperwork is all set, I'm already admitted and have the scholarships locked in.
I have around ₩650,000, so I won't be needing Korean currency for a while.
I've been eating legit Korean food ] Banchan is amazing. I just had ddeokbokki last night... UHM
FREAKING DELICIOUS. I'll be trying kimchi chigeh and some naengmyeon or jjajangmyeon later. ^^

Anyway, I still have some things to do...

Buy a camera, to take pics and show you guys!

Find out who from TL will be in Korea when I'm there (Aug 21 - ~Dec 20)

Get masters so I can at least beat some Korean golds -_-

Learn more Korean + get better at reading Hangul

Download more Kpop + start watching dramas (any reccomendations?)

Besides that, I'm hella pumped for fast internet, cuz my internet in Hawaii SUCKS.
I'm hyped to be able to hopefully watch some GSL/SPL/OSL/MSL LIVEEEE. (@GSL I want pics and maybe some autographs!)
I'm not sure if I'm going to get a phone, but if I do, I heard they have ridiculous phones, at the Transformers level.
I want to eat some more Korean food, and see all the pretty things in Korea while it's still fall. ]]
Maybe go to a Kpop concert. :o
+ Drinking. (I think I'm of legal age in Korea. :3)

Oh. And Korean girls. OMGGG.

Yayyyyy. Anyway, that's all, just a little status update for anyone who was curious and a little outlet for my (possible) over-excitement.

Awesome! You better check out some GSL while you are there. I hope it is a great experience for you.

Oh, and the trick with the Korean girls is speak some Korean. Even guys get all twitterpated when I break out the hangul. It's a great opener. When I was doing my med check up last week, I asked where the trashcan was in Korean and two x-ray techs and the nurse got all goggle-eyed. And they were all men.

Oh, and I should also mention, do not rely on Korean guys to be your wingmen. They have no game and how they ever figure out how to reproduce is beyond me.

Sorry if you're Korean and this upsets you, but it's true. Korean men are absolutely clueless when talking to women. I can't even count how many times I've been in a club or a bar and it's split along gender lines. It's so bad that in night clubs, men would rather dance with themselves before going up to one of the many women that are standing around looking bored.

Sounds exciting! I'd be interested to hear about how the ladder compares to the NA ladder from the perspective of someone who isn't a pro player.

There's actually a lot of us over here, although we don't tend to meet up as a large group very often outside of BW/SC2 finals. Hope you have a great time at KU man.

The trick with Korean girls is to be ripped, lol. Yesterday at Haeundae my friend constantly had groups of mind-blowingly goodlooking girls approaching him for selcas or whatever. Major jelly.

I'm also a spicy rice cake fan, although everyone else just thinks it's kids food hehe. I like the fish cakes ^_^ My favourite dish here is kimchi jjigae for sure. Barbecue is good but it's not as comforting as some nice spicy warm soup. Whenever you eat Korean food you always have a runny nose. It's now my measurement of good food, how runny my nose is. And Korean Chinese food is really good. They have this deep fried pork that is like crack. I could eat a few tonnes of that stuff. And proper ramyun at Japanese places <3

I haven't been to Seoul yet, I want to this winter, so I will be up for a TL BW meet . I really wish proleague finals were at Gwangalli, I was there last night and it is so beautiful, but you would have just missed that. You're here for the World Cyber Games in Busan though (no BW ). I'll be going for sure.

I would download some Korean movies, my favourites are My Sassy Girl and A Moment to Remember. And watch Family Outing at http://www.isubs-squad.com/. I personally think all the dramas are rubbish Knowing about the culture really helps and you learn tonnes of vocab. If I get left alone with a Korean I always talk about T-ara or whatever (I made some Korean guy literally ROFL last night when I showed him I knew the roly poly dance ).

It's going to be amazing!

I'm working on learning some dances, but I only know bits and pieces. Mostly SNSD stuff, Abracadabra, The Kara butt dance, need to learn some guy dances T.T

Well since I'm only gonna be a sophomore, classes aren't completely major related. I was accepted as a computer and information science major, but I'll likely just be taking electives. ^^

I'm so jealous! I've already said it before but now even more so since it's really coming a long! Man, I think you are gonna have an amazing time. Just how you live up to it and how much fun you are already having show that
And that picture looks incredible. I love snow <3

Also check out Running Man (it's available in 720p also on iSubs), it's really funny and what he said is so true. You learn a lot of culture from the variety shows. How they interact, what is appropriate, different foods and just in general pick up on the feel of so many things.

I don't know if I can recommend any Drama's since I've only watched some Dream High and almost finished with Iris. But I do like them, and I think in the future I will actually watch some romance ones. What you can do is see which people you enjoy. For example if you like Suji or Taecyeon or Eunjung or IU you can enjoy Dream High. Go about it that way.

If you like T-ara, Eunjung is doing We got Married currently, haven't been able to follow it actively and really mad nobody is encoding it in 720p (it's not 2003 anymore people) but it should be fun and you also get to see other members.
And what I think is really fun about it is when you see some of the roly poly performances, when the camera goes on Eunjung you can see her glow, become super enthusiastic and really try hard to be cute and cool (like too much so, not for the performance anymore but for herself or someone else .
I think that's because of We got Married, they are doing really well and in comparison to when I watched CN Blue's Jonghwa and SNSD's Seohyun, they develop well and have gotten really close and couplely. Totally into it :o

Last, I know some people don't like the podcast learning and I'll agree it's not preferable over active learning but you still pick up things well and can play them whenever.
http://www.talktomeinkorean.com/category/lessons/ That one I'm enjoying lately, nice index, free, if you get the main hosts, good chemistry fun. Might be something don't know.

Too much already! At least you can tell I'm sincerely excited for you <3

Phones in Korea aren't really any more high tech than anywhere else!

They pretty much export any high end phone nowadays (ex Galaxy S2, Optimus).

I'd offer to show you around but I actually leave on August 20th...odd coincidence?

Also some of the universities actually don't have super fast internet in dorms, just to warn you.

Don't want to make you feel bad but I was a little disappointed the first time I stayed in a university dorm here. Wasn't at KU though so you might be luckier.

Edit: It's too bad you won't be here for the GSL finals at the end of this month. Oh well you'll definitely get the chance to make it to a couple. As FuRong said early there's actually a decent number of people in Seoul on TL but everyone is pretty lazy and has a lot of their own stuff going on. Someone usually ends up making a meetup thread for a finals or something but you're more than welcome to make a thread just for a random meetup. I'm sure you'll get a few people.

Ahh thank you, I'll try to look into the shows. I want to watch WGM with Taeyeon. :3
Also I've already started TTMIK. Kyeongeun is so adorable. It's such an awesome resource. ^^

I saw some random variety show videos with like... video chatting... years ago. I was amazed.
Anyway, maybe I just have a shoddy phone. :o
I see, you hate me. :[

I'm sure the internet will be faster than what I have at home. -_- I have trouble playing SC when my family members are looking at FB pics on a different computer. And sometimes I dream of being able to load 2 320p youtube vidoes at once.. well... not gonna happen.

If you have a choice, choose KT over SKT. I have SKT right now, but I hear KT is better for Internet. Then again, I try to play LoL from West Coast servers, so I shouldn't be too surprised. The stats are good, but there's still lag at times loading YT videos. It's not like you can load HD videos in seconds~ hehe. But it has been really good at points, DLing at like what I think was 3-4 megabytes/s.

Regarding phones, Korean phones ARE a lot better, if you're willing to pay for it. Video calls is a standard feature here, although if you're looking for the cheapest/oldest models, they might skimp on that. And it also costs more, probably. But you should at least think about getting a cheap phone/pre-paid phone, it's pretty important once you make friends .

I'm leaving the 23rd, so if we're gonna have a TL meetup, you should have it before then :D.

Yeah all the cool kids choose KT, I mean who likes Bisu anywa...oh...wait.

Yeah we should have a meetup, in fact someone should make a thread for the GSL finals which are on next Saturday. I nominate you~ It's at Yonsei anyway which is good for us.

I don't think I'll have a choice since it'll be University internet, but as long as I can load 720p or 420p without having to wait, I'll be happy. ^^

I suppose we'll see all that goes on before I get a phone, and what kind of contractual things I have to deal with, or just get a pre-paid. I'll have to talk with my Dad.

The internet has good days and bad. Some days I have load YT vids really quick, other times I have to wait for longer than the video for it to load up all the way. Like this weekend, for instance. All weekend my internet was dragging. Seems to be back to normal now, though. Then again, when I was downloading a movie from iTunes last night, it went just fine while youtube still lagged. So it might just be a youtube issue. I've noticed that sometimes, when I'm watching Day9 vids or other commentators, I get slow download speeds, but if I switch over to some other video not game related, it loads up super fast.

But the point is, the Internet here is pretty good, but it's not magical. If you're in a dorm with a lot of other college kids, that could put a huge strain on the bandwidth, just as anywhere else.

I'll keep that in mind. Usually late night is peak time when everyone is downloading and watching shit, so I tend to not play SC then, but we'll have to see ^^

not alot of koreans use FB. some do, but most don't. doesnt hurt to try though?

Yeah, of the handful of Korean friends I have on my FB, only one posts with any regularity. But it's slowly gaining popularity. The big one is Cyworld but I'm pretty sure you need a Korean ID number to sign up there, as with most Korean internet sites. They're very big on knowing who everyone is and what they're doing online.

Speaking of, if you're a regular youtube viewer and active in different communities or want to upload your own vids, you'll need to change your location on youtube to Worldwide or you won't be able to comment or upload vids. Just FYI.

First of all, grats for the opportunity. Should be a hell of an experience.

1) I confirm that although being physically superior helps (ripped + tall), it's not a requirement for picking up girls. Personally I find that Korean girls are rather bored, and want to hang with interesting guys. Not necessarily interesting in terms of talent and $$$ (although that really helps lol), but like someone who knows how to play the flirting game. Push-and-pull. In Korean we call that "Mil-Dang" (밀당) and you gotta master that shit. Gotta be flexible between the spectrum of gentleman and heartbreaker, and play the right role at the right time. Got all that? ^^

2) 650k won isn't going to last you 4 months, especially if you plan on going out at night and having fun. Last time I was in Korea I spent about 200k won a month and I "went out" maybe twice a week. Spent most of my other time there was spent meeting relatives, watching SCBW on TV (never went to watch it live, I don't know why... I'm so stupid), and meeting my best friend and challenging him 1v1 (again in SCBW) all day.

3) If you're used to beer in the "western world" then Korean beer might be pretty weak. Time to show off your drinking talents! Beware of some oddballs there that can down several bottles of soju (20%) like it's nothing. Established bars are ok, but you can have just as much of "quality drinking time" at local street vendors (some are illegal I think but nobody really cares). Cheap import liquor has a high chance of being fake, so I recommend sticking with domestic.

4) For the real hotties in clubs and room-salons, you will need a Korean wingman. And this is why 650k won won't last you 4 months. Preferably, for your wingman... someone who can translate, has decent to awesome physique, and who's been there done that.

5) Setting up Cyworld probably will end up being a huge waste of time. I mean, you're going to be so busy meeting new friends hitting it off with new chicks adapting to new university culture blablabla omygawdd no time mang! Stick with Facebook and phone for communications unless you're ready to dedicate every night to Cyworld-ing. However, with a proper wingman from #4 above, he will help you set up and catch up to speed, and then Cyworld could become a real possibility.

Have a great time!

The 650k won isn't meant to last me 4 months. It's a starter so I have won in case I need it.
I've been working over the summer so I have more funds readily available, should there be a need. I don't plan on blowing 2+ grand during my semester in Korea, however.

haha nice. i actually spent a month at that campus for an orientation (talk program teaching english). that campus is located in jochiwon so it's quite a ways from seoul, but it's still manageable i guess. the surrounding area was relatively rural/residential though. i think it's like 1.5 hours from seoul on train? similar times on bus... so if you can i'd take the train since it's much more comfortable. the dorms are pretty nice and you probably won't have any culture shock adapting to them. each dorm has its own bathroom and two beds. the dorms also have fast internet. the bathrooms don't have the retarded put your used tp in the trash can rule either. one gripe i had was that they enforced curfew pretty strictly (though it may have been only for my orientation). they have a key card system that logs when you enter/leave the dorm, so they know who came home when and so forth... afaik, most korean universities are like that since i found out that most of my korean college friends climb out their 2nd story window to come drink or whatever. the cafeteria was pretty nice as well. overall, i'd say it was a quality modern campus.

i've been here for 1.5 years and i'm leaving on sunday. though i still have 2 quarters left to complete at school, i feel this entire trip was really worth it. i'm happy to say i'm now fluent in korean... and my soju tolerance level is up to like 7 bottles now lols.

oh yeah and winters are cold as shit in jochiwon (though it may be because i'm from la.. lol)

yeah, you're legal. one of my good friends was '92. we had to sneak him into bars/clubs before january 1st of this year, but past that he was good to go on his own. always keep your id on you though since they card at most bars in seoul.

p.s. all the rumors about how bad drinking is in korea are true. i think i yakked multiple times everyday for the first few months i was here.

If you have anymore information on the campus, do you mind PMing me? Or you can post here.
Thanks for the insight! I don't suppose you have any pics of campus since it was just an orientation?

Not to hijack Mizu's blog(!), but are you of Korean descent or did you have any knowledge of the language when you first arrived? I'll be there for a year and I'm trying to gauge my expectations.
