That's pretty good quality for the price. Can I assume that when you mean $1 mic that you don't mean something that looks like either of these?

If you want have the option for acoustic recording, you can certainly get ok mics cheap, the second of those two, the condenser mic would be a great choice, if you don't want to work with vocals. They're certainly not studio quality mics, but then again how many people are going to want to drop $200+ for one? Another option if you dont want the hasstle of cords and whatnot, you can always go the portable recorder route, though they are usually ofc more expensive, but not by much.
