It's 2011, and according to the World Health Organization, South Korea is the world's skinniest country! Now, as a Korean, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be proud of this development or not, but heck - it's an interesting factoid nonetheless.

I've been to Korea many times, and every time I go, I'm amazed by the beauty of Korean women. Granted, it's a misleading stereotype. Not all Korean women are gorgeous, obviously. But in my opinion, in South Korea, there definitely is a heavy emphasis on physical beauty; hence the plethora of plastic surgery clinics in Seoul (and the amazingly low prices; I think it's something like 300 USD for a nose-job and eyelid surgery).

Just one look at Korean pop culture, and the first thing you'll notice is either the absolutely gorgeous women (if you're a guy) or the pretty boys.

But there's a lot more to Korean culture than Girls' Generation or Super Junior (what is up with these names, anyway?) - Korean history runs deep and dirty. Moreso than many people may believe. Although it is divided today, the Korean peninsula was unified for over two thousand years, and even had its own Three Kingdoms: Goguryo, Silla, and Baekjae. In fact, one of the first South Korean MMORPG's (massively multiplayer online role-playing game), Kingdom of the Winds, was based on events from the Three Kingdoms period. The Three Kingdoms of Korea inspire many of the historical dramas one can see on television today. Goguryeo, the most powerful of the Three Kingdoms, managed to take over most of Manchuria before it was conquered by Silla-Tang forces in 668.

Korea's real breakthrough was when, in the 15th century, King Sejong the Great developed a writing system for all to read and understand. He believed that written scripture should be accessible to all (unlike the infernal Chinese characters), and therefore created a phonetic alphabet from scratch. Thus, 한글 (Hangul) was created.

Hangul is definitely one of the easier Asian writing systems to understand. Because it is all phonetic, you can learn the entire alphabet in a day or two. This is a great website to get you started. Once you've learned the alphabet, there's literally nothing you cannot read! Although the meaning might be a little fuzzy if you haven't formally studied Korean, at least you can walk around Seoul and have some inkling of where you are.

Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed this little piece; hopefully you've come to understand just a little bit more about this mysterious little peninsula that's full of ridiculously good Starcraft players.

Oh, and if you guys didn't know already - DongRaeGu is a small district in the Busan metropolitan area. I know some people were wondering what that meant.

As a korean, I think it is disgusting how there is a huge overemphasis on physical "beauty."

i agree. i think koreans have the concept of skinniness and fitness/healthiness very confused.

i strongly believe that koreans have a huge problem with 마른비만 (skinny obesity) with females in their 10s and 20s.

Wait snsd is considered gorgeous? Man korean beauty standard are reeeaally different from my local ones. Around here the size of a girl's butt and thighs are much more important then her face. And even I have hotter ass then korean pop stars

Why would I want to go to Korea for beautiful women and alcohol when I've had a lot already from the comfort of my area? :S And vodka >>>> soju. kpop? No thanks mate.

If I go to Korea, it will be for vacation and watching professional SC live.

Why are those girls so naive and ignorant to think that FICTIONAL tv shows are just like reality? Almost like girls in USA.

It may still be worse in the US, as you see that not only are many of our women trained to believe that men are incompetent and soulless, yet must treat their lady like a Disney Princess and must give them free reign over their money (even while women are beginning to dominate the workforce and college campuses), and yet SOMEHOW it is never good enough for them. Many women in this culture are perpetually dissatisfied because we show through media and in advertising that nothing is ever good enough. They need bigger tits; a hunky pool boy; a better job; a more expensive bag; a nicer yard. It never stops! Luckily we have tons of ladies that aren't completely fake, but from a cultural overview, we breed both men and women with unrealistic expectations for their mundane lives.

I have very little knowledge of Korean culture. I would like to say, though, that for both the anorexic-looking *cough* "beautiful-looking" women portrayed in both Korea and the USA: eat a goddamn cheeseburger once in a while. You look like a 12 year old.

why do white people want to be suntanned so badly, I cant understand that one either. beautystandards vary from culture to culture and between people.

and if I am not mistaken Koreans and Japanese people tend to have lighter skin than most other asians.

To be fair, the 100th day thing is something that happens with all fobby East Asian girls. One of my Chinese ex-girlfriends was big on that sort of stuff.
