I've posted some stuff here in the past, and gotten some very helpful criticism. This one is a progressive house track I made two days ago while laying home sick, and deadmau5 fans will probably notice the similarities to his Brazil track. Dunno what else to say, hope someone will enjoy it, also appreciate criticism be it negative or positive. :3

http://soundcloud.com/ehrencrona

Also OT question, I've been looking to purchase some decent monitors in part just for listening purposes (EDM) and in part for monitoring/mixing/mastering bass lines and such properly, but I can only spend around ~$200 per speaker. Anyone got some advice?

Well first off let me say I love your kicks, they are very nice.

Recommendations:

Bring our your counterpoint/second melodies a bit more, they are so quiet. Plus you didn't even have like a second part in integrals, which you def need.

More stuff! I know this is prog house, but I started losing interest as you just went over the same chords again and again. You can either go the route where you just switch up the melodies a bit more or you can try to emulate more of what like mau5 does in brazil and maintain interest by constantly moving the filters. Listen to that track again and notice that there isn't a single part where he just sits on his progression, there is always a part either coming in or going out very gradually (but audibly).

oh, in integrals right after :44 I could swear that you hit a sour/wrong note

On the speakers I would say that any mainsteam monitor will serve you well. Your price pointis a bit on the low side and I would seriously recommend spending about 500 for the pair, as that seems to be the break point where speakers go from being crap they just call monitors to actually solid equipment for cheap (plus anything really small is not going to have the bass you want for electronic). M-audio/rokit/mackie/genelec and all that kind of stuff are all going to be good, I wouldn't deliberate too much just find some and get them.
In Hungry Hungry Hippos there are no such constraints—one can constantly attempt to collect marbles with one’s hippo, limited only by one’s hippo-levering capabilities.

Thanks!! Well, I have a tendency to remove some old stuff the minute I add something new, and due to 2 hard drive failures in less than a month I lost most of my projects. I'll upload stuff on occasion to my soundcloud though.

Thanks for the criticism/recommendations. You're right in that it certainly needs more elements right now. I listened over brazil and there's a lot more stuff going on with several plucks and moving filters so I'm gonna work on this track a little further. About that sour note it's probably synth clashing with delay.. Grrr.

and yeah I suspected 200 per speaker might be a bit on the low side, I might end up waiting and getting something in the 250-300 range, but right now I do everything by headphones which probably isn't the best idea. >_<

also remember that monitors are a one time purchase, if you treat them well you can use them for 20 years

I reccomend that you run down to 4sound on folkkungagatan and actually listen to the stuff before you buy. Any brands previously listed is bound to have a model that suits you. Also ask the personell there for assistance, they are great.

indeed, that's where I bought my headphones and it's also right where I live. :D

Since you're both into production I have a question for you. I easily get really tired of working on my projects and pretty soon I'll end up hating listening to my scores over and over, so I find myself abandoning any given song I'm working on after a couple of hours rather than polishing them and working on finer details. Do you get that as well? Do you usually work on multiple songs at the same time?

i know people who do have multiple projects at the same time, but personally i generally only work on one project at a time and focus on that. But im only making singles atm, if i were doing a full album id probably do several tracks simultaniously to make sure they work with each other.

I have folders of ideas. I can work an entire night on something, listen to it the day after and condemn it as crap. But i save the project, and later on i can bring the ides in it into another project. It has happened multiple times that the lead that was missing in a proper production was to be found in one of the scrap projects done earlier.

Nowdays i get less crappy idea projects though. It comes with experience and Its all about making the foundation of the track exactly like you want it otherwise you will start going back and change stuff later and the song will derivate away from your initial concept which in turn can lead to you getting bored of the project. To avoid it, plan your work and make sure you nail the sound you want before you add in more stuff on top of it. Thats how i do atleast.

Yes, but it doesn't really help for me. I probably have in excess of 500 song starts on my computer accumulated over several years.

The only way I finish tracks is if I use a friend and basically send the project file back and forth adding and revising each other's contributions.

That or turning off auto-snap and making hilarious bizarre tracks with 600samples! You should try it its really fun! http://soundcloud.com/sob3k/dimmer-switch

Nice track. Really diggin it.
As far as monitors go, I use Rockit 5s. I DJ and I use them for mixing at home. Check em out. Pretty nice monitors for a decent price.

oh yeah deadmau5, king of progressive house, right lol?
imo this pluck synth styled "progressive house" has to go, since it is just slowed down trance with those chordmelodies.

anyways, very solid and crips production quality but 10% inspiration.

oh edit: some inspiration from older tunes and newer ones:

oh and sasha & digweed are still the kings of progressive house (well Diggers is more of a tech-house guy), look through any of their tracklists for inspiration and influence.

.

I appreciate it + all the previous tips/criticism you gave me. One thing that's a little unfortunate is that I only have a not so powerful laptop to work with, so by the time my tracks are starting to come together a little bit I don't have enough cpu power to continue editing, or well, the workflow goes down hill so to speak..

edit: tracks are good.. but that pixies remix. I might have died a little bit inside.

As a counter part to rustymikes arguments here, i believe inspiration should come from within. Do whatever kind of track you want man, its only when you follow your heart that it will show in the music aswell.

However, if your goal is to get a track signed, rusty has a point in that something more has to happen in the track. i actually sneaked this track into one of my label managers to see if you could get some proper feedback, and he gave you a pass on the sound quality, but desired something more in the actual writing of the track.

Oh thanks. Haha cool, I'm glad he approved of the sound quality. No I don't desire getting signed or releasing or anything, it's a hobby I enjoy but I don't think I could ever make something if I felt I actually had to lol.
