I got rejected from everywhere except UC Irvine a couple months ago, and now, I get an email saying that UCSD is gonna accept me into my top major - nanoengineering (Sixth College). I would be a BioMed major at UCI, which was my second major.
I'm gonna be frank -- I have no idea how the social life or the academic life is at either of these two colleges. All i hear is that Irvine has great food and hot chicks and that UCSD has an engineering program that rivals closely with other top tier schools. Also, I'm pretty prone to fake diseases (really bad case of senioritis), and the sound of Triton's eye does not sound appealing...Is it really that bad at UCSD as they make it sound?
If any of you guys go to UCI or UCSD, could you tell me how you liked it and how the life is over there?

u got into nanoengineering at UCSD? crappity crap batman!!!! since you're just going into college (i assume you're in HS not a transfer from community college) I guess you won't know if you will like engineering or anything. Let me tell you though, the nano program at UCSD is probably the most interesting RIGHT NOW because there is a lot of funding, a lot of cross-major collaboration, and even a new BUILDING being constructed. Top in the nation status. Just saying, if you think you will like engineering and are not sure if you may really prefer physics, or bio, or chem, this major will possibly let you branch into any of the above. I graduated (chem) as this was formulating, so I had no chance to be play a part, though I tried very hard to do so.
Academically, you have similar styles of teaching at UCI and UCSD because they are research based schools. Esp for your major, your general ed will be in classrooms of 300 kids no joke, with of course "discussion section" of 20-30 kids to get reviews taught by a Teaching Assistant, lecture style. I must say academically there is no better school for your first or second major than at UCSD and UCI respectively. Such amazing programs and professors.
Socially, I think both are equally dead on campus, and equally fun off campus. Environmentally, UCSD fqn pwns irvine. In SD we have miles of beach, are 40 mins from Tijuana (though I have family there I don't like it much to party, but some do), an hour from GORGEOUS hiking and mountains (lookup Julian, Cuyamaca, and Ramona), an unusual concentration of breweries (Stone, Karl Strauss, Alesmith, Pizza Port, Ballast Point and easily about 15 more), 2.5 hour drive to snowboarding....I love San Diego.
What have I missed? Oh yes. Ze ladeez. UCSD is full of unhot people. (NOTE-anybody from UCSD reading this-I am obviously not hott, neither are you d; ). But really, not too many bombshells. I'm not so sure about Irvine, I never heard they have hott girls (and I actually go to Irvine area to party every few weeks).
I do know that Irvine is near Orange County, and that place is BRIMMING with delicious food. Viet, Chinese, Korean, Mexican, Thai, Seafood you name it. San Diego has its pockets, but I admit, not to the same magnitude. STILL, this requires you to drive 30-40 minutes away sometimes. If you do this for SD, you can come up with the same level of delicious food, especially Mexican food the closer you get to El Border.
In long conclusion, I love SD, and I loved what I learned at UCSD, but I really did not dig the campus. The social life on campus was far outweighed by the life I had outside of that dingy grey social bubble, and I am sad to say that many people do not leave their small 2mile radius comfort zone from campus. Too bad for them!
UCI or UCSD, it's what you make it. gl hf dawggggg
