Hi anybody reading. I got SC2 ages ago and even though I really enjoy it I haven't played that much online. I think it's because I haven't played an RTS online before (apart from a little of WC3 aoens ago).
I played a few practice matches ages ago as Protoss and I won every game untill I felt like I really wanted to try a bit less hard, so I threw a game late at night so that I wouldn't have to worry about losing so much.
Anyway, since then I've been practicing as Zerg and I played a practice game last night, which I lost, although I made buddies with the guy I played which was cool. I don't have any SC2 buddies so that is really the reason I am writing this blog. So if you're a new or low level player (or not) and want to have more fun in SC2 rather than being all serious I'm definately up for some 4v4s or whatever since they look ballin'.
The other reason I haven't played that much is that I'm pretty much a hardcore CoD player (although I have played other FPSs), so I have a bunch of people I know on XboX live who we generally smash public lobbies with. Since I don't know any people on SC2 then the CoD can seem more appealing.
However I really like SC2 so I'm here giving it a go again. I've already put 2 people on my friends list already this week so I think that things might finally start to take off for me.
In the long term I'd love to be a random player, though at the moment I only play Toss and Zerg. When I get through my practice league games then I'll finally get a rank!
Oh the other thing is I've been making myself a style for playing Zerg. When I play Toss I play really standard with 2 gate robo and then just keep adding stuff. I find the economy management pretty easy to deal with since you just keep your unit producing structure making stuff and add more things as you get more free money.
However Zerg is pretty tough to manage the economy. I'm still even not sure how the best way to start the game is. Right now I'm making stuff on 14 food's worth of drones since that seems a reasonable way to start. Anyway, the general drift of the strategy I want to use is to get some anti-air and detection (since everybody goes air in pratice league) and then use Nydus worm to send my units over and also to defend my expansion. Since the other player is almost always going to have few ground units then It should be a good strat.
The tough part is that I'm not sure how I'm getting my early air defence and detection. I started thinking that I would get some spore crawlers, but they are really tough to get in a timely way, so recently I'm getting a couple of extra queens and also overseers, which I like better. However, until I get Nydus any expo is really vulnerable.
Anyway, I lost the first game quite narrowly in that it ended in a base race. I attacked his expo at the same time he attacked mine, but I didn't have a nydus at my expo and also I didn't have creep between my bases, so I had no way to get my hydras to defend there. So I have some easy improvements to make there. It was tough though because the map had the expo really far from the main.
So, thanks for reading if you made it this far and get in touch since I'm needing SC2 buddies (EU server).

Liquipedia is your friend if you're looking to master some basic build orders.

Yeah, I have tried some build orders and they are useful as a starting point, but I really want to understand the zerg economy management on a fundamental level. I mean, once I know how to get the most units I can in the shortest time possible then I feel like I can choose whatever I want to make pretty easily.

I'm NA server but i feel ya mon! I play lowlevel zerg too and trust me it feels great to score a ling runby through a shoddy wall-in.
My base-race story from yesterday is that his HUGE bioball brushed aside my piecewise attack- lings, more lings, small baneling wave+smaller ling wave (instead of all at once lol). I had 4 bases at the time of his attack, but managed to morph bout 8 broodlords outside of his expo! I crunched through that as he ate my first two bases, and JUST KILLED the starport AFTER 2 vikings popped. Dammit! I had no anti air so he killed my broodlords, but I killed all his units by the time he got my 3rd. He had 2 viking and 2 empty medivac, no scv and my few lings were preventing any building from landing. He was in shock as he just laughed with "omg...gg" hahaha. Good times!
Skip those 50 practice games and hfhfhf

Welcome to Starcraft! Let me be the first to say that practice league is probably not actually that helpful -- the game speed being slower is nice for a little while, but don't get used to it -- the main difference being the rocks on those maps which completely change (eliminate) early game play. After 50 games on practice league maps, you're going to be in for a huge shock when you move to league play.
Do whatever you feel works best for you, of course, but if you're not comfortable just jumping into ladder play (understandable) I think you'd be better off in the long run practicing vs a medium AI in a normal 1v1 custom game. Learn a basic opening build, like you said as a starting point, and then defend against whatever the computer throws at you while getting up to 200 supply of whatever you want as fast as possible. Emphasis on the fast. Keep track of how long it's taking you to max out, and you'll get more efficient over time as you experiment with when to make units and when to make drones. Once you can comfortably do that and easily crush a hard or very hard AI, hop on over to the ladder and you'd probably start off in gold at least.

To be fair, SC2 has been out for about a year so you can't really that you got the game "ages" ago...but I know what you mean it feels nice to feel like a veteran.
|
I got the game probably 6 months ago, so not right when it came out, but to me it feels like ages ago, especially since I haven't got into it as much as I should have.
@Karasu: Haha, yeah, those crazy games are the best.
@Iranon: I practice vs computer on fast so I guess I am used to that speed, but I want to play the practice league because it is a lot more exiting playing vs real people, I get bored playing vs computer the whole time. I guess if I play 1 or 2 practice league games per day then I will be on the ladder in a month or so. That is the plan.
A lot of times when I play vs computer I'll quit after 10 minutes or so because I will have something I'll want to change in the build, so rather than continuing I'll start again and try it slightly differently.
