But you post this blog anyway, and when people start calling you naive and overly sensitive (which judging from this blog you most definitely are), you can't take it and start banning people from your blog. If this is what you're like, I'd much rather hang out with your Dad instead of you, and I'm Asian.
Do I think racist jokes and wisecracks are harmless? No, I actually don't. But when you say "there's no proper reason to be this bad" I can't agree with you anymore.
I am not banning them from my blog because they are disagreeing with me, i am banning them because they don't take the time to write more than one sentence saying "You're a pussy" or something of the sort.

Interesting blog, and some very interesting (slash ridiculous/immature/ignorant) responses.
To OP: Like others have said, damage is minimal, mostly stuck in your family environment, which makes it more your problem, rather than a systemic one. For the others saying it's just a joke... I like to think a good joke doesn't have to resort on bagging minorities (yaknow, those groups that cop enough shit in their lives already?). People generally grow out of that garbage after school finishes.
I remember confronting my dad about some racist viewpoints he held. He's an approachable person though, so it wasn't a big deal. I just said to him straight away: "Dad, that's pretty racist", and gave him an accompanying look of disgust.
I don't know if you could make that work or not. Like with the Osama gibe, you could just say: "Dad, that's really stupid, not all Muslims are terrorists." Try combat his irrationality with evidence and reality.

Exactly this. I just see no sense in making fun of people who are different, because we all are the same inside, just with different shells.
Sounds like you're young and got brainwashed by all the political correctness bullcrap they teach you in school/TV. IMO EVERYONE is a racist... it's just a matter of how racist they are. Don't spout the generic "we're all the same on the inside" line that they feed you in school/kid's books/TV.
It's almost as bad as that "Appearance don't matter at all, only the inside matter" line Disney/tv/books try to feed people.

Sheesh, who are you trying to score points from with your cynical views? In your opinion, everyone is a racist, but you don't even back it up with supporting evidence. Rather you just denounce it as brainwashing, political correctness, etc.
I suppose if everyone's a racist, then it's all good then, yeah? Let's just continue to be racist. Of course, not all racism is equal (guess who's on top?), but if everyone's racist then... what?
And I laugh at your criticism of schools and books. No, you don't sound like a propagandist or preacher at all...

Hmm... racism... Where do I start...
I strongly believe that your dad and his way of THINKING doesn't ruin anyone's life unless the hearer breaks from within after your father brings out some strong thoughts and opinions for people to hear.
In the case of racism I think that ACTIONS speak loudest. The actual choices you make based on your "knowledge" are what matter, imho.
See what I did there? It's all fun and games 'til somebody loses an eye (or a tear).

Well once you get your own stuff going, you can invite him to your home and 1. have discussion with him or 2. give him a warning that you A. gonna (insert word for a violent act) if he doesnt stop being lame or B that you will never see him again if he doesnt stop being lame
You cant dictate the thoughts of another human, but you can even out the inbalance that his jokes have created or you can prevent the inbalance to exist.
Most important is just do what you feel is the right thing.

You'd threaten violence against your own father? Stay classy Denmark.
How about talking to him? That is taking action you know.. holding conversation... Wtf kids these days. How did you guys get past kindergarten with social manners and interactions... wt...fwwaaawwwk?

Stereotypes != Racism
Seriously, this drives me crazy. A stereotype is grouping people up, the way your dad (jokingly) group muslims with OBL. That's not racist.
Racist is the belief that one group is inherently inferior/superior to another, or that one race should be mistreated by society or yourself, etc.

dont try to change yuor dad

Do you not think such stereotyping can lead to prejudice, discrimination, bigotry... racism?
It's one thing to stereotype Muslims as having brown/olive skin... it's another thing to stereotype them all as terrorists.

neither of those are racist.
they are discriminatory and ignorant. but i see no racism. muslim isn't even a race.
here's an example of racism. "white people are superior to black people because black people are genetically and culturally inferior."

Eh, substitute 'Muslim' for 'Arab/Middle Eastern', but correction noted.
Racism is a type of discrimination.

Don't know where you got this idea. Racism is a generalization of a race, which can be good or bad. That is all it is.
And yes, everyone is racist. It's hardcoded into humans to note differences and to make generalizations. And by everyone I don't just mean white people damnit :3
Anyway, racism doesn't always have to be wrong. Some dog races are inherently more loyal, agressive or prone to certain personalities than others. Is it not just vanity to think we'd be any different?

I think you're assuming your Dad has bad intent towards foreigners. I think he's just joking around. My Dad does the same thing, but I'm just like "Whatever."
|
My parents do this too. I really couldn't ask for better parents honestly, but some of the stuff they say makes me cringe just as much as OP. My mother always talks about being the N of the house, and my dad told a joke at a family/relatives get together about it being renamed "The Black House." Everybody but me laughed in approval.

Everyone's a racist. I fucking hate zergs and I think Z is EEembaHH
edit: I just lol'd HARD at whoever said 'a) threaten with violence to ur dad' ROFLMAO. ...yo dad stfu or ima beat yo ass ok

E-mail him some some Islamic death threats from a fake e-mail account... Worked on that Alexandra Wallace chick.

Racist is the belief that one group is inherently inferior/superior to another, or that one race should be mistreated by society or yourself, etc.
I recently attended a number of lectures on the anthropological theory of differences between racism and ethnocentric discrimination.
Stereotyping can very well be racist if the stereotype itsself makes racist distinctions; to announce that all black/hispanic/caucasian people are boorish and lack intelligence would be a racist generalisation - that is to say, a stereotype based purely on race. Conversely, to announce that all muslims (islam being a religion, rather than a race) are violent would be a cultural/sectarian distinction, and is likely more an ethnologic discrimination than a racial one.
I know it seems like a purely academic thing, but they really are quite different.

My dad is also insanely racist but he did grow up in a shitty neighborhood, was the only white guy on his college basketball team, and was a cop for 13 years working in terrible areas of nyc. So I guess I can kind of tell where hes coming from, but still...
