Who the fuck doesn't?

Most things we fear are exaggerated yet most would be (a little) nervous from seeing Arabs boarding a plane just like a lot of people worry about turbulence once airborne even though it's extremely unlikely to cause a crash.

"Theres too many immigrants taking the jobs that Canadians should get" was imo the only racist comment made by your dad that you told us about.

EDIT: Still, that last one did paint him as a nationalistic racist douche whom I hope you won't turn out as.

EDIT2: I guess my point was that being an honest dick who makes racist, sexist and anti-semitic jokes doesn't make you a racist

SERIOUSLY?.... so you got to get a little nervous when you see : Spanish ppl on an airpot (you know, they would be ETA's members), or people from central america, they might be involved in maras, or Italians or japaneses they are probably members of a maffia. South american are drugs dealears...

this "war against terrorism" shit pisses me off so much, is just the american excuse for invading a country for no reason, and most ppl belive this shit, and end up making stupid comments about Arabs like "When I am at an airport and I see someone in a turban I get a little nervous"...

No comment about turbulence? Does turbulence make you nervous?

My point wasn't that Arabs are dangerous. My point is that when Arabs with bombs are all over the news then it's only dishonest to say that terrorism doesn't cross your mind when you see an Arab guy on your plane.

You are too sensitive OP.
There is no racism in your dads comments imo. Its pure paranoia if those kind of words are considered racism nowadays.

Older people weren't brainwashed by numerous multikulti organizations and weren't living in globalized world as our generation, so yea, it's pretty natural they think this way and I can assure you there's nothing you can do about it when they've been thinking this way for 40/50 years. If it really offends you, just go and tell him, if you say he's not some hardcore rasist I see no reason why he wouldn't stop talking about it infront of you.

I don't really want to go into this topic, but if he says that when he sees people at turbans at airports and gets little nervous, it's perfectly rational and natural behaviour in consideration of previous experience. Imagine you are bitten by a dog. Next time (and pretty much every time in future) you will be more cautious when playing/meeting with a dog, even though it's completely different dog/breed.

I'm sad that there's growing hate (well not hate, but kind of hostility) towards korean things in my region. Hyundai started factory here and since the beginning it's been nothing but problems. They didn't adhere to our laws of ecology, working there is pretty much slavery (well, probably normal from asian point of view) and generally, hell, even their korean managers can't behave at a golf course. Everytime I mention I'd love to visit/study in Korea in future, my family don't understand at all :/

Uhhhhh. I saw the documentary on Chemtrails actually, and even though i believe they could do that stuff, I have serious doubts they actually would.

Back on topic, Yeah, I know he is joking and I am being too sensitive, but whatever. You can choose to accept racism as something to joke about, you can live racism, or you can choose to go against it. My dad likes to joke about it, and I go against it, so I just gotta make a compromise with my dad about saying racist things around me.

Edit: It seems that this blog has encouraged me to ban some people from my future blogs. Well, if you are banned from my blog, you can't read this, so yeah. Don't come here and post just to say I am a pussy (which I will admit, I pretty much am).

Your way of thinking is definitely a way that I would like people to think. Racist jokes enforce racism.

Plus, inappropriate jokes always makes me laugh and they wouldn't be inappropriate if everyone thought they were funny.

That leads to the last paragraph that some people seem to be skipping. I have trouble confronting people who have authority over me. Its not that I can't state my opinion to him, it is that whenever I do, he always has something to counter my opinion and nothing gets done.

Yeah I'm thinking the same thing. I don't think he is honestly serious about the things he says, I've always considered those kind of comments jokes, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't laugh at them. I don't think they are any worse than a mom joke or fat person joke or anything like that. If he actually confronts these people and legitimately tells them this kind of stuff to their face then I think it's a problem. Until then, I think you are taking this too seriously.

Well comparing Fat-people jokes to Racist jokes doesn't always work. Obese people are obese because they let themselves get that way, while people of different races have no control over their skin colour/culture.

If someone choses to let themselves become obese, then fine, they made that choice knowing they will probably be made fun of. However, people didn't choose to be what race they are, and making fun of someone because of they stereotypes of their race isn't fair.

I am Asian myself living in a predominately white country.

I have been made fun of in more ways you can imagine.
But I will admit that I also laugh at jokes made about Jews, black people, Germans, Americans, Rednecks, spanish people, well frankly the list goes on.

As long as he does not bother anyone with his jokes then it doesn't matter to me, however if you mind it(therefore he bothers you) then feel free to speak up about it, it is your dad.

Stereotypical jokes can be fun as long as noone is present whom it might offend(Did I write that right?). It is however disgusting if people do it in front of people to whom it may concern.

Edit: Ever watch a black/colored person do Standup comedy in a predominately white country?Half the jokes are stereotypical, guess what, its golden comedy most of the time. However there should be borders as always.

That is pretty light hearted stuff, not agreeable necessarily, but no real cause for you to react so strongly. I don't really agree with the argument about immigrants taking jobs from natives (especially in Britain where half the people who complain are unemployed/wouldn't do the jobs done by Poles/middle eastern immigrants) but I can understand that it is frustrating, like people who whine about balance in video games. Same logic.

When you meet British/ Scottish nationalists who insist that wogs (old racist expression, not sure how common outside of UK) can't run businesses and can't understand modern culture, and that they dilute mainstream culture (such an ambiguous argument lol), then you can start to get a little concerned. They're very common in UK and Scotland right now unfortunately.

Just sounds like your dad is part of an older generation who held different views and never really had to meet the groups of people they were encouraged to be suspicious of by the media.

:D don't mean to overly psycho-analyze or anything foolish like that, and living in texas, I know exactly what you mean about feeling awkward around racism. Really though, nothing your dad said is really very racist... It's pretty normal to identify with your "own" culture than someone elses.

I feel you feel this way because you really haven't been around true racism that much... That's a good thing :D Half of my neighbors still, after the birth certificate, still don't believe he was born in the US. I don't even dare repeat the things I heard during the last election. I also know plenty of white people who's best friends are black and routinely use the word "nigga" and it's not even the slightest bit racist. Maybe my experience simply comes from Houston being such a diverse place, to the point to where a fear of being racism can sometimes even be percieved as rascism and while knowing nothing, I somewhat feel like your just afraid of thinking you might be racist if you find his jokes funny.

But then, I suppose if it's bothering you enough to make a blog about it, you really should sit down and have a talk with your dad... Maybe not even necessarily about the "jokes" but something closer to the heart of what he actually feels. Understanding trumps all or some shit :D

You're blowing it out of proportion, the reason someone would get nervous around people with turbans is because the war between America and the Al-Qaeda, America is not at war with Spanish, Japanese, Italians, or people from South/Central America, but they are against Taliban and Al-Qaeda, and allies of America are enemies of Al-Qaeda. Don't be ignorant and make assumptions.

Yeah I'd have to agree with much of the sentiment here that you should just let it be. My dad says much worse then this on a regular basis, to the point where my family says something to him EVERY time he makes an offhand comment like that.

I've personally given up as I've realized my dad doesn't want to stop making these remarks, and I'm certainly not going to be the person to change his mind. At this point I've actually come to enjoy the remarks, as like most people said, my dad never acts on or goes out of his way to make sure the people he's talking about knows he's saying it.

I'll just assume you're somewhere in your late teens-mid 20s like most of us here on TL, and I can tell you that our parent's seem like they'll be the last generation to carry this type of latent racism. Obviously racism is always going to exist, and I along with everyone else would be lying if we said we never once made a discriminatory/racist/sexist/omfgwtfbbq remark, but our generation seems to be the first to realize people aren't that different from each other.

Also just to comment OP on your remark regarding obese people, I thought I remembered reading something about obesity being genetic for some people, maybe not in the context you're referring to, but if it is genetic then obesity would fall under the same umbrella. Good chance I'm not correct, but figured it'd be worth mentioning just in case

That's... not that racist.

If he told one of them "hey, where's Osama" that would be racist. But honestly even my really PC History teacher makes those sort of comments occasionally. Heck, yesterday my friend and I were joking about the estudious indian stereotype, and about how all the indians in my APUS class pronounce Woodrow Wilson Voodrow Vilson. Sure, it's mildly "racistishy" but just really a joke.

Heck, look at the T Mobile Ads.

My mother always talks about how every person who isn't white is always on welfare or some government safety net program and how they're taking our jobs and money.

It's so stupid.... racism is retarded and so is my other extended family that share this dumb ignorant racism.

I see no racism. It could just be joking and feigning ignorance and generalizing for the sake of humor. Or it could be actual ignorance. But where's the racism?

That is unless when you say he argues for racism he is saying something like "x race is superior to y race in terms of z" where z is something considered inherent and fundamental to humans.
