Forewarning - This is a shameless bragging blog, if you're not interested feel free to read on down the list and ignore this

So last night I was playing a few ladder games on my Diamond-ranked North American account. Played a clutch game against a Terran player. Went for a 1gate expand, he attacked early with a handful of marines and marauders, I fended it off losing a couple zealots and a sentry (bleh), but the expansion remained alive and I was well ahead. Took the game home with a 6gate +1 armour attack.

Bam. Promoted to Master's League. This now makes both my Southeast Asia and North American regions both be in Master's League. This makes me pretty happy as I was promoted to Masters on SEA quite early in season 2 and had initially worried that it might have been a lucky streak.

Comforting to know that I have improved to the level where I'm consistently playing at that level and is a great confidence boost.

Thanks for reading.

Grats! Haven't played SC2 in while since the new season but it's a great confidence booster rising through all the leagues.

Not sure if the fact that I couldn't even surpass C- (okay I'm lying, D+) in Broodwar after a year of playing says anything about how challenging SC2 is though

Winning is winning though!

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that the minimum skill requirement to do well in BW is higher than in SC2. If you were really bad at RTS games, you probably wouldn't even get past grappling with the interface, let alone get into things like build orders that were necessary, but SC2 is a bit kinder to players in that regard so you can start learning things necessary for decent play sooner.

I think that Diamond/Masters is more like D+ upwards in BW and all the leagues below it are for casual players.

I mean most players who are really into this game will get into diamond and masters eventually. This is considering the number of casual players currently in sc2.

In a number of years, there will be a shift where all those playing are really into Starcraft and not many people will be playing casually wherein getting into gold is considered amazing :p

This is an excellent point as well.

BW was not exactly welcoming for casual gamers, and while Starcraft 2 is, eventually they'll get bored, and if Blizzard aims to maintain the 20% per league split that they have been aiming for currently, the lower leagues are going to get very tough indeed.

lol I don't know, BW is the most basic RTS on the surface and can be enjoyed casually fairly easily. It's just the good players just keep getting better and it can take a while to catch up.
