Edit: i was Actually thinking of something like... his dad pay $300.. Then ill add $50 on my rent Check for 3 months..

I think the above is a fair compromise

what you guys think of this compromise... if i cant get them to pay the full balance

So Guys............

This happened last night,
got home and put my work out bag on the floor of my room. (had my retainer in it because i stayed somewhere else on wednesday night)

about 30 minutes later i go down stairs to make some Dinner and i find my roomates Dog chewing on my retainer.

The Dog completely tore apart the top part and the bottom is still usable, but it doesnt matter because you cant just replace the top ONE without getting a New bottom ONE. (maybe you can but theres no Point) the bottom ONE is slightly damaged anyway but still works fine.

So heres the dilemma.

a New retainer costs around $300. I don't feel obligated to pay for this replacement since it was my roommates Dog that tore this to shreds.... and it wasn't just sitting in the open for him to get to. the Dog and to dig through my bag and find the retainer case and chew that shit apart.

His Dad makes a ton of cash and i feel he should pay for the replacement since it was his sons Dog.
(my roomate gets a fat Check from his dad every month for living expenses so the Money would come from his dad if my roommate paid for it).

I dont make that much cash.. College student ($2,500/month)

compared to his dad WhO makes upwards of $200,000-$400-000/year.

What do you guys think???

Should i have to pay for it??
Should we split it 50/50??
Should his dad pay for it??

P.S. I've been wearing the retainer for about 2 years now... there is no option to just not buy a New ONE... I WanT to have straight teeth for the rest of my Life

Edit: Here's ONE thing i forgot to mention....
We used to have a 3rd roommate, he couldnt afford it so he had to go.
my friends dad is also paying for our 3rd roomates Rent/Utilities ($650) until the lease is up.

Also, yes $2500/month is plently since $1500 Only goes to all my living expenses...

But ive had to get a lot dental work done thats Really eaten up all my disposable income
$1300 ish towards Root canal and all the stuff that goes with it.
$300 ish towards cavities
Also had to spend about $600 on car registration/tags/plates
Also Paintball costs about $250/month, i could stop but u gotta have fun

$2,500/month is more than enough cash but due to these expenses right now i just cant do the $300

IM getting dental insurance but its just to late to save me on these costs

Really you think 2500 per month while going to college is not much cash?
$200k-400k is a pretty big number to guestimate. (Are you just throwing in random numbers?)

50/50 split is fair regardless. Since it was your fault for knowing there was a dog that could get into things and your rooomates fault for having the dog.

Ask him to ask his dad, can't hurt to try. Parents usually brace themselves for surprise costs of college kids.
Also after two years of wearing a retainer, you might only need an alignment wire (I have no idea how much those cost).
Also check if you have any dental covered by insurance.

If his dog messed it up I don't see why you should have to pay for it. Like you said, it's not like the retainer was just out in the open where he could easily get it. Doesn't matter who makes more money than who, his dog screwed you so he should pay for the new retainer.

I would ask him if he'll pitch in for half and maybe he'll just offer to pay for all of it. I think 50-50 is a good deal, though. Also, you're making quite a bit for a college student...you're a lot better off than most my friends (if not all).

Hes a Lawyer, hes make a lot of cash but he isnt on a continual monthly salary.

I just know the range of cash he makes per year. Lawyers yearly salaries are not always the same.

Wow... you get 2,500 per MONTH? That's my living expenses for an entire year. Unless you have heavy monthly medical bills, you can clearly afford a $300 retainer. Nonetheless-- it was your roommate's dog, and he should pay for the damages it did. If he doesn't want to, your choice how much you want to fight over it.

One thing that has not been taken into account here, is the relationship you have with your roommate. Are you guys close? How does he spend his money. These questions matter a lot if you actually want to get some money from him.

1) if you guys are tight, ask if he could pay for the whole thing, and say you will be more careful.

2) If he is a cool guy, start with a 50/50 offer, maybe you get it, maybe he offers to pay for the whole thing.

3) You guys fucking hate each other, go straight to his dad.

Im assuming its 2, and 50/50 is what is going to happen.

If your roommate knows this is what happened, he should really be offering to pay for it. Ask him. If he makes a fuss about it, pay for it yourself but give him the cold shoulder the rest of the year lol

We have been best friends since elementary school.

He gets about $1600-$1700 a month from his dad.
about $1000 of this is living expenses and the rest goes to Weed/Paintball

Here's one thing i forgot to mention....

We used to have a 3rd roommate, he couldnt afford it so he had to go.

my friends dad is also paying for our 3rd roomates Rent/Utilities ($650) until the lease is up.

Being rich shouldn't be a reason that he should pay for it.
Sidestory: My friends and I were looking for apartments once. We were thinking about getting a 2 bedroom and I would live in the living room (barely any privacy) because neither of them were willing to do it. Then they expected me to pay more for monthly rent because I was richer than them which was complete bullshit.

I would try to guilt trip him into paying something. It's not completely his fault because: #1 you agreed to have a dog in the place and #2 you left your door open knowing there's a dog around. Maybe if you tell your roommate "oh man this sucks, I have to spend $300 on a new retainer" -> "what happened?" -> "your dog tore it up" -> "seriously? do you want me to pay for it?" Of course this is an ideal conversation but being demanding about it probably won't work

EDIT: Guaranteed if this went to court, you would lose the case on the basis of the two reasons I mentioned

It was deep inside my workout bag...

Also this happened before about a month ago. The dog took the retainer from my bathroom (it was on the bathroom counter in the retainer case, so he had to go in bathroom jump on the counter and grab the case + retainers. luckily they werent damaged that time

So the logical response was to leave the thing in an even easier location for the dog to get something it clearly really wants to chew??

you're in the wrong for leaving important shit out in the open where the dog can get it. It's not that hard to put the thing in your drawer or high on a shelf.

This isnt a court case............

and second, if your friend has a dog and he tears up something of yours worth a few hundred dollars would you not want him to pay for it?

Espeically since i dont have $300 to just throw down right now

If I were his friend, I wouldn't hand him a $300 bill for something he couldn't control. Sure he could've locked up his dog in his room, but you could've also closed your door.

And I know it's not a court case, it was just to prove that given the facts, an outside party would rule against you

If I were in the situation, I would pay for it, but I would definitely mention to the roommate that his dog wrecked the retainer and see if he would volunteer to pay for any of it. But that's just what I would do

But it is still an entitled mindset (2.5k a month, you are not poor). I mean, you don't really have to replace retainers. It is not like food or life-saving medication, wherein the continued absence of it will cause you to die.

Anyways I would ask if he could help you out first (the way you approach this is important), then pay for yourself. Going directly to his dad may cause issues unless you know them well.

*actually, if he is okay paying $650 a month for you guys, it probably wont be too difficult to explain a one time increase of $300, and offer to return it later when you have money.

I get where you coming from..
But, it isnt an option. My mom spent thousands of dollars for my Braces, it would be retarded to not get a new retainer just because of a stupid lil dog and $300 (<3 the dog though).

I'm tight with the whole family could go to anyone but would be better to talk to my bro first about it.

unless there is some kind of agreement that he locks his dog in a room or something that he fucked up on, you left someone you know the dog has been after on the ground. It's your own fault, man up and stop being so goddamn spoiled just because your buddy's got a dad with a bank account. A dad who is covering the difference on the lease that your broke ass can't.
