Hey all.
I think my headphones/microphone have given up the ghost. I fraps'd a couple replays and got nothing but a lot of static out of the sound.
Does anyone have any advice about a freestanding microphone vs one attached to a headset? Is one more desirable then another?
Also, to give everyone an idea of just how far I have to go...THIS is the only video I'm managed to get up. The sound is way low and it's only gotten worse recently.
I could use specific criticism so don't just post telling me I suck. I already know that. Instead, tell me why and how I suck so I can work on it.

I also made flash cards for Zerg and will be making more for Protoss and Terran (when I get to the store to get more index cards). I'm hoping this will help me with unit recognition and general knowledge about how all the units/buildings interact.

I like your commentary style (and I'm pretty picky too). Mic volume is way too low as you say yourself.
As far as mics go, it's obviously a big segment - headset vs table mics... depends really. For a table mic you aren't paying for the headphones (which is wasted money if you already have a good headset without mic), with headset mics they are much smaller, easier to handle (no need for a pop filter) and so on.
My basic suggestion (if your budget allows it) is to go for an Audio Technica AT2020 USB (should run you just below 100$) and a pop filter (buy a cheapish one or make one yourself). A hundred bucks is not all that much if you want to expand your audio quality and become a serious YouTube commentator in my opinion. If you want to check out how it sounds, search for the mic on YouTube, HDstarcraft uses it as well (the commentator with the best audio quality in my opinion).

EDIT: found it new on eBay (from a powerseller) for just 75 bucks BTW.

I personally use a snowball and everyone I have recommended it to has loved it. I would also recommend getting a boomstand for it to keep it within 3 inches of your mouth; which will allow you to minimize all background noise. I personally don't use a pop filter with it if you hear lots of pops (mainly with p's) when you talk, you should get one. I believe TheGunrun and Day9 also use a snowball.

The Snowball isn't a bad mic but with a price difference of ten bucks I would certainly prefer the AT2020. Compare Day9's sound to HDstarcraft's, easy choice to my ears (but do make up your own mind on the matter). If you're on a tight budget and can't get the 75$ deal on the Audio Technica I would primarily recommend the Snowball as well!
