I recently just watched the CatZ interview where he discusses the need for regional leagues. If you haven't seen it watch it here:

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=210961

Anyways, it got me thinking and there are a lot of very good points he makes. If there were state championships that dumped into national championship it would be super awesome. I'm not really sure how we'd get that organized but what I did for my state (Tennessee) is create a custom division on SC2 Stats.

http://sc2ranks.com/c/8473/tennessee-region-division/

Its only 14 players now but my goal is to get 50 players in there by the end of season 2 on the ladder. It would be cool if other states created additional division rankings. Hell it would be even cooler is sc2ranks went ahead and created state divisions but I may be dreaming.

If you know anyone in Tennessee please direct them to the the link above. If you are from another state maybe you should create a division for that state and if you do please let me know and help out if I can.

Regional competition of Sc2 is going to stunt the growth of e-sports rather than help it. It is international cohesiveness and competition that will let e-sports explode around the world rather than just in Korea.

Think of it this way: If you asked 100 people who only know 1 thing about StarCraft, 60 of them would probably say it's South Korea's National Sport.* That means that if there's real competition between foreigners and Koreans, there's a national interest in the foreigners to win even from people who have never watched/played Sc2 before. Basically, a "Korea vs. The World" scenario where The World has a chance to win brings a lot of people to the game.

Additionally, If a Korean is competing in a foreign tournament, it naturally brings a higher level of play to the tournament. I think it's better to see a truly epic game between Koreans than a mediocre game between foreigners. A game needs to be exciting to watch if people who don't play that game are going to take any interest at all. This includes e-sports. Sc2 won't get big if ever PvP is a double 4gate, or every TvZ is 2 base Marine/Tank play. Koreans train harder, and thus have a slight edge over foreigners. However, when a foreigner knows he is playing against a Korean, that knowledge drags every ounce of ingenuity, every sense, every nerve ending in his fingers to its maximum potential in order to beat a top-level Korean. Korean players at foreign tournaments bring out the best in foreigners.

Finally, if foreigners are ever going to be able to play at the same level as Koreans, they're going to have to play against Koreans. You can't be the best without beating the best. When foreigner's play against Koreans, they inevitably get better playing against the best. Thus I see no problem with Koreans in the TSL, NASL, mlg, Dreamhack, or any other major foreigner tournament.

*I made this shit up, I don't have actual statistics, but if it isn't reasonable, disregard this point

mbr23121...i fail to see how this will destroy international cohesiveness, its essentially just doing the same thing that the koreans did at the start of BW when they first set out to find good players for a proleague, where did they look? for the best at each pcbang...by this logic it stands to help esports far more than to harm it. you seem to be hung up on the fact that koreans are in general better than foreigners at sc. now, why is this, are they naturally better at sc due to their race? no, they arent the difference is that they have more players in concentrated areas which leads them to discuss sc strategies and train together, foreigners generally have to train alone due to having no one within their immediate area. For instance in BW there was a time where the top americans suddenly gained a lot of skill, what was the reason for this? a vent channel, they were talking about the game. regional competition of sc2 will lead to more people in contact with other sc2 players in their general area, which leads to competition within themselves to improve more...i fail to see why it would stunt the growth

Here is why I think that regional leagues will ONLY help.

The chances of me influencing someone to watch / play starcraft that I haven't met in real life are pretty slim. However there is a much larger chance that my passion for StarCraft rubs off on my real life friends. They come over to my house.

Another good example is so you think your friends would be more likely to watch you play in a state championship that overall has a lower skill level to a global SC league or watch you ladder all day trying to get into the grand master league. (This example doesn't apply to people that are "pro")

I don't want to discount the importance of global leagues. But I feel the growth will be faster and stronger at regional levels.
