Had my second cigarette ever yesterday with one of my friends (well the friendship line is blurred and complicated to say the least). The first one I had with her was a lot better time. (Although I ended up getting caught extremely drunk by my parents) Felt like writing about it, I find reading about other people's perspectives and lives fascinating so I might as well contribute my own. I might add more later if I feel like it, the conversation actually gets interesting. If you don't want to read a random story by a high school senior, then don't bother reading.

I took a drag from the freshly lit cigarette and stared intently down the sloping hill. As the cancerous smog filled my lungs, I watched two lacrosse players practicing down at the edge of the field. I wondered briefly if it was someone I knew, as the goalie at least looked to be close to my age. The lacrosse ball flew high into the sky and my eyes followed it upwards to the unwelcoming deep blue sky with clouds skewed to the side, as if someone painting clouds in the sky had left and forgotten to fill in the rest. I shivered and released my breath as the chilling breeze swept over me, a bucket of ice against my skin. The smoke sailed away from my lips, disappearing mysteriously as it had come.
“So who are you?” I cast a glance to the black haired asian girl walking beside me. She was short with a pleasant somewhat pointed face. Clad in a hoodie and extremely red and extremely short running shorts, she was shivering, her slender legs almost fully exposed to the chilled air. I sighed to myself and didn't answer her right away. As we walked down past the guys practicing lacrosse I pushed my brain to remember how we had gotten to the current discussion. We'd just watched The Town (was REALLY good), and had went to get thank you's for a few teachers for writing college recommendations. Then we went out to smoke the black&mild she had bought me. She wasn't smoking because we'd agreed last time she smoked that she couldn't for a whole month. Not that if she really had wanted to I could have convinced her otherwise, but it was nice to think I was making sure she wasn't becoming addicted.
“What do you mean?” I asked, knowing I would need clarification before giving the wrong answer and getting my head bitten off. To actually debate this girl, you needed to play by her rules, and speak in her language lest you be sentenced to death. She started giving a response in between her chattering teeth, and I knew she was probably freezing to death, I wasn't exactly warm myself.
“Lets go back to the car, you're frozen solid.” She nodded in agreement and we set off back over the embarrassingly short distance that we had gone for two cross country runners. She sprinted the last 200 meters, charging towards the front passenger seat of my red minivan. I reached in my pocket to unlock the doors for her, and then realize I had left them in the engine. She laughed at my mistake, saying it was lucky that the car wasn't stolen. Its not like anyone would want a minivan anyways. She blasted the heat, and I stood outside talking to her through the passenger window so I could finish my cigarette without getting the car smokey.
“Ok so if you don't know who you are, then what do you want?” She asked, continuing our conversation pre-sprinting.
“I don't know.....” I murmured, casting around for something.... Anything... But my brain was blank at that moment, like it had been all day. You needed to be on peak form to carry a conversation with her, and I was much less then that. “I guess... To know the answers to everything. To why we're here, what our purpose is.”
She quickly interjected: “Why does there have to be an absolute answer to everything?”
“Because there just does. If there wasn't, there would be no point to anything, so if I waste my time finding out a purpose to life, then its not like I'm wasting my time more then anyone else is there's. I'm not sure if there is a purpose or answers, that's why I have to seek it.”
“I thought you were an atheist...” She said and snorted. “You know you're not actually smoking, just holding the smoke in your mouth? Try actually breathing with your lungs.” She mimed me smoking and inflated her cheeks mockingly. In response I took a giant drag on the cigarette trying to show her I was indeed actually smoking it. She shrugged and said: “Whatever floats your boat.”
I had to turn away so she couldn't see me, eyes watering at the burning in my lungs and let out the smoke. It escaped my lips like a charging bull, the cold swallowing it up. We continued heatedly taking about the matter as my cigarette was slowly burning down.

Yeah, I would get into more specifics of the argument but it would be tedious to some people. We met in IB philosophy class, so that kind of framed part of our friendship. We spent like 30 minutes talking about what being "better" or "best" was, it wasn't very interesting that's why I stopped where I did.
I've only smoked twice, I couldn't even keep it lighted, it kept going out. Why so skeptical?

Good story but just FYI I would say a B&M is closer to a cigar than a cigarette..and they are definitely rough when you take a big hit, specially if you got a "slut" B&M which just means it is loosely packed, and that much rougher. I actually started smoking with black and mild's but can't stand to smoke one now. They are just too rough..
PS I wouldn't describe myself as an addictive smoker, just casual in case you were wondering

In my high school, despite what we're told every chance people can get, smoking is "cool". Not that I want to smoke, be a smoker, or continue smoking. I just wanted to write about an experience I had, so hopefully we can keep the smoking debate out of it.

I quit for like a week... was pretty good, felt good after day 3/4... got off a subway one day watched some guy light up right next to me and I was like alright enough of this shit and smoked the best smoke evar =)

smoking is an excellent socializer. It can take a person from an enormous party and instantly get them on a 1 on 1 where they have nothing to do but talk to you. "hey do you smoke" can be one of the best pickup lines.

Lol makes me glad I never started smoking. I agree that smoking is an excellent socializer though. Lots of my close friends are smokers and they socialize while they smoke so it keeps me out of the loop with them considering I hate the smell of the smoke (I stay away from them when they smoke).

If those college kids cant quit then they are not trying. Honestly. My wife quit after 3/4 solid years of smoking and I quit after 5/6. Unless they started at like 13 and are smoking a carton minimum a week they just don't really want to quit.
Also, I love how any thread that mildly involves smoking devolves into the moral "STOP SMOKING!!!!!111one" thread. Who nowadays doesn't know of the dangers of smoking?

Actually it takes between 4 and 10 cigarettes for someone who socially smokes to begin getting addicted. That's how most people start smoking too (socially).
As to the people talking about whether smoking is cool/not cool... Really? How old are you? It's just an activity which people do. There's nothing cool OR uncool about it. I can't understand the reasoning behind it being either of those, if there is any.

Yeah I appreciate that people have concern for me, a complete stranger, but its not like a blog comment is going to tell me anything I haven't heard a thousand times, or change my behavior. Its not like I plan on smoking regularly from now on, everyone chillax and try to enjoy the blog.

She probably shrugged cause you didn't really inhale it. After toking from your cigarette, inhale some normal air so you get the smoke nice and deep in to your lungs lol.
