I'm not good at starcraft. It takes quite a long time to come to that conclusion, everyone likes to say 'oh I just haven't practiced enough yet' 'its only a matter of time', but I think its fair to say that I'm just not good.

I came to this realisation after playing some ladder. I played about 10 games yesterday, not a lot for most people, but I'm a guy who played a total of 130 1v1's last season, this was a hardcore session. I went about 5-5, i cant be sure because I'm only in diamond league so the game wont actually remind me my total number of games.

my wins, mostly against zerg, felt dirty. After falling behind due to failed harass I fell back into making pure marines and medivacs, sure I had some games where I held a 6pool I didn't scout and some heavy baneling aggression, but none of that felt like it was down to my skill - unless you call managing to construct a wall out of barracks and bunkers a skill.

my loses were almost entirely to protoss, I just couldn't beat them. This is nothing to do with balance, oh how I wish I could jump on that scapegoat. This was entirely me being awful, misrallied units and getting caught off guard by a push, bronze level mistakes. this combined with terrible macro, worse than usual, meant I didn't deserve to win the games.

So the grand decision that prompted me to make this blog? I'm considering giving up trying to be good. Going back to basics, just making marines and maybe some medivacs. Could I reach my goal of getting into masters league on 2 games a day of practice if I keep it simple? Or am I setting myself up for failure by giving up on the so called meta game and balance changes? Right now I feel like its at least worth a shot, I don't play enough to have decent build orders beyond 5 minutes for all 3 match ups, and I don't like 1v1 enough to bother trying to.

Can I really break into masters with just the most overpowered unit in the game? Time to find out.

As long as you're good with it, right?

MarineKingPrime is there to show how good a strong marine army can be :}

2 games a day is plenty to reach masters if you are actively implementing improvements in your game play. But its perhaps unrealistic to think your progress will be extremely quick. It might take some months or longer.

That said, always think in the most broad/basic way as possible. An individual game in Starcraft doesn't mean much. You have to think about how to have tangible improvements over a large pool of games. And try to make smart decisions in game, don't let your commitments to certain playstyles or unit mixes or whatever lose games.

I don't think this is giving up trying to be good. I think it's a good idea to choose a robust unit composition, get it every game, and improve your execution. Forget the balance changes and just make more shit than your opponents.
