This is an image I found that's related to the japanese earthquake/tsunami. It's a compilation of various status messages from people on facebook (presumably Americans). I didn't want to post it in the other topic in the general forum because this image is in horrible, horrible taste.

I can't believe these people can say this. It's incredibly rage-inducing as you scroll down through the picture, and it makes me ashamed to call myself an American, knowing that these are my fellow comrades.

This is what happens in a country that's ruled by horrible media and nationalism.

Goad Japan into attacking.

Drop 2 nuclear bombs on civilian targets in Japan.

Tell Japan "they had it coming" when an earthquake kills tens of thousands of innocent people over half a century later.

EDIT: There's gonna' be a lot of comments about "There will always be idiots that you need to ignore."

I know this doesn't apply to the majority, that's not what I'm saying...but let's be honest, there's a disproportionately high amount of shit frothing from American mouths. It's tough to believe that such a developed country can be raising so many ridiculous people considering corporate interest and nationalism has only really taken hold since WW2. Mr. Americans in this thread, what is it that keeps you in the States? Is it family, friends, finance?

I right clicked for view link, zoomed it and I didn't even make it past the first screen full of idiocy before I had to close it. I'm going to have to agree with Crimson on how ashamed I feel for people saying such things.

I hope not per capita. It may appear that way since we are one of the most populous nations, and also because the comments are easy for you to observe since you share the English language and access to technology. For instance, you don't know how many people are saying stupid things in bars in Russia. Beware the perceptual bias.

Well, Canada is very similar to the United States in most ways other than being the United States. The biggest difference between Canada and the USA is the media, religion, and nationalism. There are idiots in Canada, but not nearly as many as the United States, and the United States' idiots tend to spew more "nonsense" and hypocrisy. I know I can't speak for Russia, but I can speak for Australia, most of Europe, etc.

There's something significant about the States.

The sad truth is that a good deal of those posters probably are college educated ppl who probably have no idea where pearl harbor actually is. Probably think its part of New York. Pretty sad. Media is a direct representation of our society; wasteland of slop. Twitter, facebook, and all these other digital networks (internet included in general) is mostly just slop. Funny that the internet was invented for universities to share knowledge and yet the porn industry and the masses (bell shaped curve of mediocrity) were the ultimate users.

And to be perfectly honest, I for one am heavily swayed by the conspiracy theory that FDR knew of the Japanese attack but allowed it to happen due to the fact our aircraft carriers that were out to sea at the time and only outdated battlecruisers were stationed.

Stuff like this genuinely scares me... seeing the sheer stupidity of the masses and the fact that I'm likely living amongst and interacting with people like this on a daily basis and don't even know it.

I mean, these people aren't intentionally trolling. These people genuinely believe in the shit spewing out of their mouths.

I don't think being a developed country has anything to do with it. In fact, one can argue it brings about elitism and even more bigotry. It all depends on the individual. Just remember that these guys are by no means a majority; they are, in the end, just a handful. What they're saying is disgusting, but what is even more disgusting are people who lump this country together through the bigotry of a vocal minority.

I'm not angered by the fact that people say "remember Pearl Harbor"?... saying "remember the US dropped two nukes" is just as bad.

I'm angered the most by the people associating the actions of a government with all of the country's people. It's the same reason why the Internment Camps were a horrible decision and why the anti-Islamic sentiment in America is so ridiculous. I can't stand people who will be the first to say their country is the land of equality and just as quickly make sweeping generalizations with another group of people.

I know they're not a majority, I said that

It is only a handful, but it's a larger handful than it should ever be. Those people aren't born stupid. Some of them are, but not most of them.

I know that the United States isn't a country of idiots and bigots. At the same time, there are pretty widespread right-wing ideas in the United States that I personally find very disturbing.

In a country so big, even loud minoirities seem rather large.

It makes me a bit sad to see people stop thinking and just linking the very few facts they know that barely relate the subject to form their opinion.

I don't know why people are so surprised by such comments. The prioritization of the welfare of in-group members over perceived outsiders has been (and apparently still continues to be) a key part of what it means to be human. It is why nationalism can be such an effective tool for control.

Is such thinking misguided here? Of course. Should we not actively try to resist such base urges? Certainly. But is such thinking in the least bit surprising in and of itself? Not in the least.

Well OP, I don't find this new at all. They're the same breed of human as the holocaust deniers, the anti-Semites, the KKK, the black panthers, neo-nazis, the list goes on. The only difference is we have some relative level of freedom of speech which allows these gremlins to come out of the woodwork background of national conversation.

Pearl Harbor: 2,403 deaths

Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: 90,000–166,000 killed in Hiroshima
60,000–80,000 killed in Nagasaki

lol, China was on the Allies' side in WWII. Even if they had wanted to attack the US (which they had no reason to), they were kinda busy with the Japanese invasion of their homeland at the time.

Well, it can't really be helped, can it. With our dropout rates, most us do not make it far enough through the educational system to learn that the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was all about oil. Maybe if they push it into earlier stage curriculums they would be more forgiving of that long ago attack.

The sheer ignorance and blind stupidity emanating from those people's posts is infuriating. Can't believe that they can say they deserved to get hit by an earthquake/tsunami because of something that happened 70 years ago with a different generation of people.

why would anyone want to listen to these people? really, come on. idk it kinda comes off as a fake to me because i have a hard time believing theres people that can spout such shit.but its not much different from your average ignorant, mostly young idiot that just wants to post something to come off as having a political opinion on something, hoping it might distinguish them from others. these people have no connection whatsoever to the events from 70 years ago ( well hardly any id reckon). they are the definition of retarded, what gives them the right to be this judgemental? because theyve personally been there? because they have the right to advocate vengeance for an event they are nto even remotely attached to? have they completed an extensive study of socio-economic and historical causes that led to the attack and the swift reprivals and the nuclear bombs?

smacks of a lot of unwarranted self-importance to me

Things like this make me lose faith in humanity, but like other posters said it is best to just ignore these sort of uneducated small-minded people. Don't forget that the USA is a big country and wherever there are a lot of people there are bound to be a lot of idiots spouting crap about pretty much anything you can think of. I do not even feel like arguing with the likes of them, I just facepalm and hope this group is a minority and does not reproduce.

Its amusing how long people are willing to hold grudges for to fuel their beliefs, although 70 years is small time compared many others. I believe parts of the Middle East still harbor a grudge against Alexander the Great despite the fact his conquests we done thousands of years ago.

Anyway, these people aren't ignorant they know exactly what they're doing. The whole Pearl Harbour shit is just justification for their disliked of the Japanese people and in many cases the very same people will hide behind this fact to shield them from anyone commenting on their racism ("I'm not racist, its just karma for their attack on US soil").

To use a Starcraft example, its exactly the same as all those people who dislike Flash because he's a turtle. The very same people know he's probably one of the most aggressive terrans playing today but because they dislike him for beating their favourite player into the ground, they latch onto the few boring games where he builds 100 turrets to shield them from any call outs. They're not ignorant, they just really fucking hate some things and will grasp at straws to help justify their beliefs.

Wonder if there is any cognitive dissonance amongst these people.

I actually don't get why people like comparing these events either; shouldn't we be counting something like total civilian deaths? Yeah I know these are big events, but it doesn't mean that they made up the entire war.

Well OP, I don't find this new at all. They're the same breed of human as the holocaust deniers, the anti-Semites, the KKK, the black panthers, neo-nazis, the list goes on. The only difference is we have some relative level of freedom of speech which allows these gremlins to come out of the woodwork background of national conversation.

this is quite possibly worse than the stuff mentioned in the OP. LOL.

So commiting the worst war crime in the history of the world wasn't enough payback? tbh I shouldn't be surprised since there was actually people in the "Awesome things your country did" thread that said that nuking Japan was "awesome". Genocide has never been more fun!

You know, this is pretty dumb, but people say dumb things on a daily basis, and it's not just Americans. Sure, this is incredibly offensive, but it's about on par with the level of stupidity I'm surrounded by in University, a place that is supposed to be intellectual. In the end you kind of realise the only reason the people you go to school with aren't saying offensive things like this is because they've been indoctrinated the opposite way. Neither is really capable of self-criticism or stepping outside the situation and looking at it in rational terms. A person refuses to donate money to Haiti because 'haiti never donated money to me.' That person just feels pressured to give to a cause they don't care about, and are trying to fix their dissonance of being seen as selfish by friends. A person DOES give money to Haiti because 'it's the right thing to do,' but they spend five times more on junk food and games for themselves the same day. Their 'charitable' act is just trying to evade the same cognitive dissonance of being the only person not to donate money when all their friends are raving about the importance of being generous.

People are dying in Japan. There's massive structural damage. That is of course a bad thing. Let's just not get to moralistic about it and know it for what it is. It's not okay to deny people the right to feel bad about it, but I wouldn't feel too proud of feeling sick because of it either. Human suffering is not a pleasant thing to think about, but it's also a constant in our world.

Agreed. While I think that a lot of the American public is pretty damn stupid for their own special reasons, you can't take...what....30 some odd FB posts about "lolol pearl harbor lolol" as any significant "shit coming from American mouths"

Do you judge our country based on Westboro Baptist? No, you don't...and if you do, then you're just as bad as these people going "karma bitches!"

Trust me, there's always going to be stupid shit coming from the American people no matter what the incident is. I'm sure there's people in Canada that say stupid shit about certain things all the time too. What is it that keeps us in the States? It's our home? What's the most frustrating thing ever is when something dumb shows up in the States, it seems like people are quick to judge the country on it, just because it's in the news or whatever. We're not a big bad terrible country full of uneducated degenerates. Don't take the outrageous stuff that happens on the internet and apply it to us.

Meh, what about this:

9/11 was a chilean payback for the 9/11 coup on Salvador Allende.

Take that, fat retards!

And I don't agree with Torenhire, I've been to the States and it has an amazing ratio of people who are rich but completely illogical and ignorant. It's amazing! I mean I've been through Europe, and most higher classes have a certain understanding... but this doesn't apply to the US, somehow.

I mean Ronald Reagan was a frigging actor and TV anchor! It's like the UK electing Sean Connery as their prime minister...

But that, was just downright embarrassing. I just hope that someone who hasn't seen America doesn't read this and think that all Americans are like this.

I'm not going to feel ashamed of the stupidity of other people. If someone wants to put me in the same bracket as the idiots in that picture, then they're no better than they are and their opinions are equally useless.

The worst part, judging from the pictures, is not a single one of them was there, or even knew anyone that was lost in the event.

The worst thing about this is that people tend to forget there are completely seperate cases, different people, people who haven't had anything _whatsoever_ to do with the past events. People are very good at putting people into categories, i.e. "japanese are japanese, americans are americans", when they infact are completely different people with different backgrounds etc.

Then again, you should try to not rage over comments on the internet. I can probably sit 24/7 and gather comments from various internet forums (of facebook for that matter) that you will rage about.

I don't think anyone here is trying to justify it. I wasn't trying to justify it with my post, either, I was just saying that you can't base a country on a vocal group of people. People that post things like this on facebook or anything similar aren't what the US is about. Japan has nothing to feel bad about, nor does the US (imo)...shit happens and what was done is done. It was in the 1940s for crying out loud, we can't go back in time and undo Pearl Harbor. We can't undo dropping the bombs. People have no reason to even correlate the Earthquake to Pearl Harbor, they're just being idiots.

If you're going to let your thoughts of people you don't even know be decided by people's stupid postings on Facebook, you're making a mistake.

I did an interpretive dance as a joke about the tsunami hitting Japan. I know it's a terrible event, and I'm not one of those idiots who thinks that people "have it coming". I am American, and I'm not stupid. There are lots of stupid people both in this country and in the OPs, but stereotypically Americans are the loudmouthed idiots. That's not really true, but it's so easy to find people who DO act that way because of the sheer number of people in the US and the sheer size of the population which doesn't get great education (both from family and the school system).

I don't get how people can expect others to be familiar with world history in detail when they don't even know how to divide properly and efficiently by their junior years in high school. I don't understand how you can say that a country is inept because the children of Cletus in the mountains or the over-privileged and under-intelligent in Beverly Hills act that way.

The thing is, people do disgustingly stupid things all the time, regardless of race or nationality or religion. Nobody is perfect and lots of people are ignorant. You just have to get used to that -- even you fall under that blanket.

edit: For clarification, I see nothing wrong with making light of disastrous events, because sometimes the best way to accept the way that you live and the world you live in (with all of its uncertainty) is to appreciate the fact that there are things you can't change and that you must live with.

You serious? You make it sound like the 40's were centuries ago. So I'm guessing stuff like genocides in Darfur will just "ease" into history in few years? OF COURSE Japan should feel bad about this
And they DO feel bad. Japanese government has expressed remorse/regret and released (half-assed) apologies

Who are you to say they have nothing to feel bad about? That's a HUGE middle finger to anyone with a relative who suffered terribly by the Japanese war atrocities. Same thing for U.S. It should feel bad about committing the worst war crime in history

To be fair, dropping the bombs wasn't a war crime. It was a brutal act of warfare and arguably ended the war and potentially saved the lives of thousands of Axis and Allied troops.

You can't look at WWII through the lens of modern day knowledge any more than you can state that "it's OK" that someone got nuked. This isn't StarCraft -- nukes don't do partial damage to buildings, they kill everything.

Sure, people are idiots and say stupid things, but the truth is that history is history. People in this day and age won't understand the decades that our parents and grandparents have lived before us because they can't. They weren't there.

Nothing "makes up" for something else in war. Nuclear weaponry being used against major Japanese cities does not just magically equalize everything and make events like Pearl Harbor or the countless island battles go away. Warfare does damage to everyone involved, there's no such thing as getting even, only losing.

I wouldn't get too bent over from these pictures. You can tell from their typing that these comments are coming from a rather uneducated group of people and it's actually unfortunate to see that there are adults with these jaded views. On the other hand, the little teeny boppers posting those "remember Pearl Harbor" comments are pretty hilarious, though. Like wtf, you know they don't give a rat's ass or know anything about Pearl Harbor other than that Americans died and are just trying to "look big" on facebook.

However, dropping the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki is somewhat questionable. It wasn't really intimidation, as intimidating someone is threatening but not doing.

Kind of threatening someone to chop off his arm by... chopping off his arm.

I don't know much about the previous tests, but it is likely that very few did know what were going to be the consequences.

Well one things is for certain and that is war really really sucks. The Japanese were somewhat justified for their attack given the context of the times. The eventual bombs that were dropped are debatable whether they were necessary, but think about this:

1) it didn't look like Japan would surrender under any normal circumstances.
2) Their cities were being destroyed by firebombing with thousands dying and yet the Military would not give in.
3) They were given warning to the first bomb but refused to give in without keeping control of parts of China that they still occupied.
4) After Heroshima, they were again given a chance to surrender and they did not.
5) Even after Nagasaki, the military high council refused to surrender and had to be ordered by the Emperor.
6) Debatable, but more civilians would have died had there been an invasion or continued firebombing. Nobody wants their homeland invaded and if it is, then civilians will fight to the death regardless of the odds or how poorly armed they are. In fact citizens actually committed suicide as Americans took Okinawa.
7) No question, American military lives were sparred by the thousands as a result of the bombing. And in wartime, nations become desensitized and saving your own ppl become high priorities even at the cost of innocent lives of the enemy.

It sucks we will always have to live with the fact we are the only ones in history to use an atomic bomb and hopefully it remains that way. 1945 wasn't that long ago, but the effects will last a long time. It still hurts for both parties involved and will take centuries to heal, but I for one am very concerned for our friends the Japanese in this time of crisis.

This bullshit about retribution for pearl harbor is a total lack of respect for those that had to fight these wars for both sides and pretty much sums up why I tend to avoid "mainstream" social network places such as facebook like the plague. Too frustrating.

Even though the earthquake is bad, I feel that Americans who remember the war, then atrocities the Japanese did to the POW's, Americans, Chinese (Nanking Massacre/ Human Experimentation/torture) won't forgive them. I feel also it is karma and it sucks for the Japanese but the new generation prolly had nothing to do with pearl Harbor despite what their ancestors did ( which is unforgivable)

I am Chinese, so I do dislike the Japanese to a large extent to what they did.

regardless to those comments were made in public, i guess, its really showing how many of those people have their knowledge/ general world view / unerstanding and Values in their baby diapers, to not to be rude..
I mean like, really wtf ? not to say that US had their WTC attacks, hurricane Katrina, etc, and what in their thinking those suppose to be? a response for Hiroshima ? lol, I can't even say, why the hell someone did a picture of smth like that, its a shame for other people in the US. Especially that this comments were made probably by random people, and which are probably like 5 - 10 % people in there ( I Hope ).

Yeah there are lots of ignorant people out there it's ridiculous.
But we can't really say because maybe they have gone through those. . 'times' and we haven't. We don't know what it's like at all.
Tho. . .
Very recently, a grand pastor in one of Korea's biggest churches stated that this happened to the Japanese because they didn't believe in God.

It's caused a huge stir and he's being bombed with a lot of shit atm.

Blind, ignorant, irrational anti-Japanese hatred leads to ignorant and irrational anti-American hatred.

Just another one of the charms of TL.

Luckily its generated rhetorical gems such as:
America [goaded] Japan into attacking.

Denying a military power oil is an act of terrorism, bro.

Mr. Americans in this thread, what is it that keeps you in the States?

I would like to state the obvious: that a small percentage of dumb yahoos does not uniformly represent an entire population, that dumb yahoo-ness is not an affliction restricted to the American condition, and that morality isn't as clear-cut in times of war as it is in the university lecture hall.

(For the moral equivalence crowd: check out the terms "Nanking occuption" and what the Germans did to Russian civilians as they invaded, and vice versa. Its quite a bit worse than the admitted injustice of the American internment camps...)

Oh, and I can point you to several international forums in which equally tasteless/stupid comments ( (compared to the facebook stuff) are being made about the tsunami. Feel free to take me up on this offer.

There's a trend here, actually. Its almost like the impersonality of the internet gives people the idea that they have free license to spout whatever shit they want...

PS How do you know these people aren't trolling?

Again, I've been in the US and I've noticed an unusual trend of wealthy ignorants. Something quite unusual that created the whole cliche of the "dumb American".

Cliches are there for a reason! Not saying that Americans are stupid in general, but there's a certain population that's rich enough to obtain a good education and who don't, and that's what so special. It's not what you would expect from such abundance and power.

Cliches are there for a reason!

The problem with that statement is you can use that to circularly justify evidence-unsupported prejudices...(e.g. X group is intrinsically dumb/lazy/uneducated -- well, I wouldn't think that if they weren't that that way, would I?)

Wait a second...

(PPS -- the spread of internet instant communication has not necessarily increased stupidity. It just made it more visible.

Back in the days of the Pony Express, only John Doe Douchebag's immediate neighborhood would know he was an idiot. Now he can twitter and demonstrate that fact to the entire world.

I suspect that Americans are statistically more likely to have twitter/facebook than residents of other countries...)

well, that's one way of looking at it. the other is that there are thousands more who jump on the bandwagon and suddenly the word of the mob dominates all reason. case in point, sudden anti-americanism in this thread.

Can we Americans on TL apologize on behalf of our country's idiots?

Though the opinions of these people are obviously incredibly ignorant, just try to remember people that this isn't the opinion of every single individual in the United States.

Personally I'm glad my home hasn't been hit with an earthquake yet (I live in California), and from the looks of the situation the Japanese are pretty screwed right now.

Let's try to dispel those notions of bigotry.

Law of large numbers. No one would be surprised to hear that 1 out of 10 000 people is a heartless bastard. But 100 out of maybe 60 million regular American Facebook users is somehow terrible. Well 1/10.000>>>100/60.000.000

I don't think the point is that "these idiots exist". I always thought it was "HOW can people so narrow-minded to this extent exist."

And it's even magnified in America, the country that likes to champion human rights and justice and ironically has the most amount of people who fail to respect those same values.

Fire bombing of 67 Japanese Cities: ~500,000 total (plus 5 million left homeless)
Nuclear Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki: ~150,000 - 226,000
Total of roughly 690,000 people killed, the majority civilians.

Pearl Harbor death toll: 2,350 killed, with sixty-eight civilians.

(figures were pulled from wikipedia, so fingers crossed about this being accurate)

That's right America, a national disaster was God's divine punishment for us losing three people for every thousand that Japan lost in these one-sided attacks. This is why I'm moving to a different country.

The fact that they are dumb enough to post something that fucked up on facebook proves they are not good people in real life. They are the type of americans that buy gas guzzlers and complain when gas prices go up. The type of american that complain about people on welfare but get fired up when the government wants to reduce social security/ medicare benefits.

These special breed of americans arent special. They are called hypocrites, assholes or dumbfucks. They can be found in any country. Welcome to the world of stupid people.

Really good post imo

Really good post? Really?

Lets see.

Goad Japan into attacking
. Yeah, what were we thinking. They were only farking raping our ally, China, figuratively and literally. And then us taunting them, and telling them we were untouchable, and daring them to hit us. Oh wait, nvm, that last part never happened. Whatever the fark you want to say abut Pearl Harbor.......placing the blame on the US instead of Japan for such an act is just ludicrous. They surprise attacked our navy without a declaration of war, and it's our fault. Nice. Wtf kind of history do you read? Oh, right, the "History Revisited: Everything the US Did Is an Affront to Mankind" version. P.S. That's no more accurate than the "History: America F&^$ YEAH!!" version.

Drop 2 nuclear bombs on civilian targets in Japan.

Or the alternative of:
A. Starving the country to death with a blockade.
B. Invading and killing millions more civilians, not to mention completely devastating their entire country. Oh yeah, and we lose tens of thousands of our own men to boot.
C. Firebombing their entire country.

Maybe you forget we were, you know, AT WAR? And not only were they not close to surrendering, they were basically sending civilians up in 20 year old planes with instructions to dive them into our warships. If we were to invade, the Japanese had plans to banzai charge us at the beaches with millions of civilians armed with spears. And yet......we're the barbaric enemies of society because we instead ended the war by blowing up a couple square miles of two cities. There is logical debate as to whether the second was really necessary, but it's not like they had approached us to surrender yet. You people baffle me sometimes.

Tell Japan "they had it coming" when an earthquake kills tens of thousands of innocent people over half a century later.

Yeah, you're right, everyone in America is calling it the Japanese's fault, and karma. I haven't met a single person who has said anything remotely close, and I know some real mouth-breathers. For all you know this crap is made up, or just 4chan trolls. At worst......breaking news, people are idiots. And idiots with access to the internet merely make their idiocy known worldwide.

The "problem" in America is that even the most complete mouth-breathing retards have easy access to technology and things like Facebook. It doesn't mean there aren't complete idiots everywhere, it's just that the idiots over here have easier access to the rest of the world than most countries.

And I stay in America because........it's still one of the best places to live on earth? No, you're right, I'm going to move away from all my friends, family, job, and life as I know it because some guy read something on the internet about atomic bombs this one time, and likes to think he's smart.

So yeah, Pearl Harbor was an unjustified attack on the USA, which had decided to be neutral in the war at that point. I know that. We went to war, killed tons of people, lost tons of people. I compared them because the USA killed over half a million people, the majority civilians, in a way that the Japanese could not directly counter, similar to the way that we could not muster enough forces to defend Pearl Harbor.

Please elaborate on why you find that biased and inaccurate. Just saying it is doesn't help me change my views that you hate so much, so what was the point of you posting that if you don't explain why?

I guess you could say that trading arms to its allies wasn't very neutral, but the US was neutral in the sense that they were not participating in the war. US had quite a strong stance on neutrality, actually, and was not planning on entering the battlefield until the attack on Pearl Harbor.

When an earthquake hit Sichuan there was an American T.V. figure (I think at least) that said it was karma. I don't exactly remember karma for what though, was it Tibet?

Upon reading some of the comments I thought of that event.

What's this thing about karma? Japan has a significant number of Hindus?

the people that say that shit on facebook are mostly uneducated people/rednecks/retards and old retards. i don't get too mad because i don't really think too highly of humanity.

you have korea/chinese/americans spewing shit as well, so don't point it on americans. it's just sad people can't come to a logical conclusion and don't have a brain. it's multicultural up here so if one person said anything like that they'll get fucked up.

And the people saying that Korea or China have "more" reasons to hate Japan, STFU, there is no reasons to justify such an horrible disaster like what hit Japan.
I love protoss because it is tough and straight. It is a race for the men. - Reach

That's right America, a national disaster was God's divine punishment for us losing three people for every thousand that Japan lost in these one-sided attacks. This is why I'm moving to a different country.

Good farking riddance. You are the exact kind of biased person we don't need.
Comparing those two things shows exactly zero understanding of history. But who the heck cares about facts and history? Better listen to US haters on the internet. Much better source of information. You're just as bad as the people you say you hate.

This isn't SC. Just because "they can't counter it" doesn't mean that it's cheap and lame, and that we shouldn't have bombed them. We were in an all-out war with japan, and despite us brutally kicking their butt all over the Pacific by that point in the war, they still refused to surrender, and were still mounting counter-attacks. They hadn't given up, and were still fighting everywhere. If anything, they were the inhumane idiots for continuing a war they hadn't even the slightest hope of winning. Their own leaders and code of honor got millions of their own people killed because they refused to surrender when they knew they were hopelessly beaten. Japan should have surrendered after Midway or Guadacanal. At that point in the war, there was no coming back. They lost whatever advantage they gained at Pearl Harbor, and there was no way they were going to compete with the US war machine in the long run. If we had not bombed Japan's civilian infrastructure, there is no telling how much longer the war would have carried on, and the only guaranteed fact was that not bombing them would not have saved any Japanese lives, and would only have costed the US thousands more in casualties.

To put it in a wierdly fitting SC2 setting. The US was the Terran up 10 bases to the Japanese zergs 1. The US is on Tier 5, and the Japanese have been blasted back to tier 2. The US has 500 marines, 10 BCs, 10 banshees, 20 tanks, and 5 ghosts. The Japanese have 100 banelings, zero anti-air, zero detection, and no production, just 60 idle drones and a hatch.
What would you do? First of all, the Japanese should have gg'ed about 5 minutes ago. But if they refuse.....what would you do? Attack with the marines or attack with the banshees and BCs? The end result to the Japanese people would have been the same.....the only difference is one way gets thousands of your own soldiers killed, while the other does not.

The reason you can't compare Pearl Harbor and the US bombing of Japan was that Pearl Harbor was an attempt at a 1 shot kill of the US. It was the only way possible to try and start the war on a somewhat even footing for the Japanese. They almost succeeded. Directly attacking civilians would have had zero effect on the American war machine, and would have been a waste of resources.

The US bombing of Japan was an attempt to end the war without physically invading Japan. I'll restate. Not bombing Japan(nukes, firebombs, etc) would not have saved Japanese lives or cities. It would only have resulted in thousands of additional US deaths as well as MORE destruction of Japanese infrastructure and more civilian casualties to the more indirect side of war, not to mention the Japanese plans to arm thousands of civilians with bamboo spears and banzai charge the US on the beach. The only ones at fault for the US bombing of Japan were the Japanese leaders for not ending the war sooner. It was painfully obvious after the late-war battles of Leyte Gulf and Iwo Jima that the US could never lose to Japan, and carrying on the war would have zero effect on the war's outcome. And yet the Japanese fought on for another year and a half. Heck, even AFTER the two atomic bombs were dropped on Japan, there was a threat of a military coupe overthrowing the Japanese government which was considering surrender and forcing the war to go on even longer.

So I'll ask again. Why was it the US' fault for bombing Japan? Do you really just not know anything about the war, and just listen to random internet haters and random Wiki facts and form your opinions about an entire country from it? Really? Because you're obviously so much smarter and have so much more knowledge than people like MacAurthur and Truman. Do you honestly think the US believed it could have ended the war sooner with less casualties, and yet refused to do so?

Ah... I think we have had a misunderstanding. I wasn't trying to say that it's the US' fault for bombing Japan. I'm not trying to say I would've made a better decision in Truman's shoes. I wouldn't've. I'm not trying to say that the US is horrible because of what they did during a state of war in which they did not even strike first. I'm not saying their choices were ill-thought.

I was trying to show my disgust that people would actually say that a natural disaster was retribution for Pearl Harbor, when far more casualties occurred in other events in the same time period. Saying a tsunami was a comeback for the events of Pearl Harbor would mean that the US should be expecting an apocalypse, as well as countless other countries - the entire world has a blood-filled history, so why aren't we all dead for the atrocities we've committed, since this earthquake and tsunami were retribution for such a (relatively) small amount of casualties?

Obviously I did that poorly, and for that I apologize for any offense I have caused. I'll be more careful with my wording in the future.
I don't suffer from insanity; I enjoy every minute of it.
