One thing I like about TeamLiquid is that variety of skills, knowledge and cultural backgrounds gathered in one place.
I've been following the Japanese earthquake updates mostly through TL for the past 2 days and I've never felt smarter.
This is the first time I don't use "classic" media to get my sources of information and I feel like I will never be able to go back to watching TV news again.
TL members are able to confront sources, bring in articles from all over the world. The updates are debated, verified by the community. The fake updates were quickly dismissed by our smartest members.
Me watching TV:

Me reading TL:

The way I get breaking new: when I get up I look at the TL sidebar. If I see something crazy like "8.9 Magnitude..." I click on it, go to page 1, and look at the date. If it was made within the past day I turn on the tv to like CNN or some news network while checking the links in the OP.
No joke!

unfortunately the science stuff is tempered by the hordes of "World War III ahhhh!!!" posts every single time a North Korean sneezes  . I suppose politics aren't as cut and dry as science-related concepts for that matter
But it's true, internet forums (TL in particular) allow for more in-depth discussion and research links and enables people to get away from sensationalist and drama-ridden media

I usually go to newspaper sites/google news before TL so when I look at the sidebar I already know a bit about the topic. But yeah, the content within the topics are way better than the stuff on the news- cause they are exaggerating the shit out of the events just to get people to tune in and stay.

I find out most of my news from TL's General forum as opposed to CNN and whatnot.

I get my news from TL, then when my parents see it on the news hours later, they think I am a genius because I always know whats happening. I love TL.

You have to take everything with a grain of salt here, though. so many different political spins and biases. sometimes you have to sift through someones bullshit, whether it be religious, political, mod or member to get the facts and truth.

When N.korea fired artillery shells at S.Korea, all the news channels I could watch were talking about football and other random stuff. Meanwhile in TL we had a direct stream from Skorea translated in direct time, so yeah, i trust tl for the news

People here share similar interests, and so most of the stuff that is really active is interesting to me as well.

Same for me regarding the (global) news. Community members will not always be faster than the average internet news site, but chances are there's a thriving discussion up for every major event within hours. And all the different viewpoints, opinions and oftentimes reports from local people or witnesses make for a much better mix than anything you'd find on regular news.
Doesn't have to be the earthquake thread, although that's a very nice example. There are discussion about politics that evolved here on TL that easily beat anything TV channels or newspapers could come up with. A while ago I started a thread about Silvio Berlusconi and it got so much feedback, especially from many italian users. I know more about Italy's political landscape now than I could ever had from browsing Wikipedia or watching news / documentaries.

Lol, same here. Although I do browse BBC fairly often.
TL: news flash-> BBC: confirms -> TL: details/specifics/background story
Best part of doing it here is you learn several things at once while reading through posts in the thread. Usually leads you to Wikipedia to look things up further and before you know it two hours have gone by and you haven't done that thing you've been meaning to do for days now. Fucking TL.

I find 90% of my news right here in TL, and it's in much more detail then some sources.
