Hey guys,
Silly question here I figured I'd blog since it's a pretty small issue. I recently put together a new desktop and ran into a problem.
My PSU blocks the spot where the top case fan should go. Will the fan actually do its job if I screw it in on the outside? It would still face the proper direction obviously, but would the fan actually be able to do some good from somewhat outside the case?
Thanks

My first question is what kind of retarded case did you buy where that is actually a problem that you encountered?
I can't really comprehend the amount of fail planning that went into building that case. You should send that thing back and get another one.
That aside putting the fan on the outside isn't highly recommended as the efficiency goes way down and the fans aren't exactly....hardy pieces of equipment. If you have more than one fan in that case you can get away with just not using the top fan.. I guess.

Attach it on the outside, then if you really want, go to a hardware store, buy some caulking (whatever color matches or that you like), and seal the bottom to the case.
But I'm thinking that the case in question doesn't really have airtight fan fittings anyway...

Its like a 7 year old case someone gave to me for helping them put together a new computer. Its really quite nice with a fan controller and heat gauge built into the front panel. But yeah, pretty fail on their part. The last 2 power supplies that were in there fit with no problems, shrug.
Heres another pic from a different angle. You can still see the PSU just peeking out the top.

Reminds me of the inside of my old case.

I would honestly say get another case. Unless you have other fans already running, other then the back exhaust fan. Does it have a fan on the side of the case? IF not, you could get adventurous, and take a dremel, and a circular stencil, some self tapping screws, and make your own fan fittings.

You can totally screw it outside if you make sure the air flow is in the right direction. Myabe you can put the sealing material on the outside of the fan to make sure it works better, but anyway airflow fan (the one fixed on the case are just there to give the air inside your case a basic direction in which they flow it's not like it's the most important fan in your case.
Summary: it will do its job even on the outside of the case no problem.

Actually, the extra distance away, makes quite a bit of difference. The fans generally don't "push" or "move" much air, the further it is, the worst it is. But, to be honest, if you don't have any crazy hardware, you will be fine. The minute you go xfire, or sli or any sort of major hardware, you would def want to be careful. For now, you should be fine.
