So I've read Harper Lee's book, To kill a Mockingbird, and Native Son by Richard Wright. They were both amazing books and I'm glad I read them.. but the question is, what is there to read next? These are the only two books I've read since last year, so I'm not used to reading lots of genres, but I'm willing to experiment.

So I ask of you, TL, recommend me a novel!

Bright Lights Big City is great. i love it's use of 2nd person narrative. This book defined a generation, its catcher in the rye-esque but for a readership in its twenties and thirties.

Ulysses or Infinite Jest if you're looking for something challenging

dostoyevsky, particularly Crime and Punishment. It's a great psychological thriller, basically invented the genre.

fuck tolstoy (jk i luv u bro)

umm....google a top ten or 100 list of authors, a serious one meaning no jk rowling or terry pratchett or anything. the more alcoholics and suicides in it the better.

You seem like you'd like short stories, so anything by Hemingway or Fitzgerald or Faulkner.

Ok the very first response nailed it. After reading those books that you did, you really should read Catcher in the Rye. Its a great book and seems right about your reading level.
Also ^^ Crime and Punishment is great too but a little denser than what you've been reading.

Anything by Michael Crichton I'd suggest. Just finished Prey, and rereading Jurassic Park right now ^^

The Foundation Series by Isaac Asimov. You can lose yourself in those books and the detail that he creates any entire galaxy is amazing and something to behold.

War and Peace, Anna Karenina, The Odyssey
Physics of the Impossible by Michio Kaku is pretty fun and easy to read, but very informative about high-tech advanced science.

Amazing advice tbh.

Speaking of Hemingway, check out "The Sun Also Rises."

Also Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms and The Old Man and the Sea are very good. All Quiet on the Western Front is a very good novel about WW1 as well. I also recommend Crime and Punishment, it is very good.

Catch-22 by Joseph Heller is also a very good book, and very humorous as well.

read all of the penguin classics if youre into that :-)
im a student of english so i enjoy most of them a lot, just finished selected tales by edgar allen poe and the last of the mohicans by james fenimore cooper. the selected tales by poe were quite refreshing in the sense that you get a great selection of rather haunting short stories. also just finished reading the road by cormac mccarthy, very recommendable if somewhat different style of writing.

Hopscotch by Julio Cortazar. The Savage Detectives by Roberto Bolano.
Both amazing bohemian romps, bordering on the epic.

Right now I'm reading Oracle Night by Paul Auster, which is really enjoyable. His New York Trilogy was awesome as well.

Dune and Starship Troopers are absolute staples in the Sci-Fi genre, especially Dune. The entire series of Dune novels (not the new ones) are quite good, though some are a bit convoluted and philosophical.

Ender's Game is also pretty good. The rest of the Ender novels are also decent.
