Hey guys this is my first blog....I'll just say a little about myself first, then on to the topic :D
I started playing bw for about 3 months before Starcraft 2 came out. I had played Terg and Zoss in bw but I thought I was better at toss. So I played my placement matches with Toss, 0-5 bronze:/ Anyways after about 20 games I switched to Zerg because I had originally liked them the most anyways. It's taken me awhile but I'm stiill in Plat with 2680 Pts
...O.K. now that you know all about me...
So early last December I went to a sleep laboratory for the second in that year because I've always had problems with my sleep schedule. Staying on track with the everyday regular hours seems difficult for me to adhere to. Some months I've even had a reverse schedule, where I would go to bed when I get back from school and then sleep for however long I please. I would wake up in the dark do whatever work needed to be done and then went to school when it was time. It actually helped me be awake during lectures, but kinda lonely... nobody is up at 3:00am
Anyways originally it was believe that I had sleep apnea, however after getting the M.S.L.T. tests back it showed that I went into REM sleep 3 out of 4 times I went to sleep and I had a score of 3 mins.
My entire life I've been told that I should apply myself more, that I have so much more that I could be doing with my time and that I shouldn't be so damn lazy. I've always carried such a large amount of guilt with me because I've never had any energy or motivation to do anything much besides sleep a lot.
Narcolepsy affects 1 in 2000 people and has 2 forms. Narcolepsy with cataplexy (Cataplexy is a sudden episode of loss of muscle function which can lead to suddenly falling asleep) and Narcolepsy without cataplexy. I have the latter so thankfully my doctor didn't report me to the Ministry so I can still drive as I have not had any cataplexy in my life, but the EDS (Excessive daytime sleepiness) is ever present in my daily schedule and makes life difficult.
Doctor also said that much research has been put into this and that there are ways now to manage narcolepsy.
I'm suuuper excited because up until now I thought I was just really lazy and depressed but hopefully once I get medicated things will be a lot easier for me!
any TLers with Narcolepsy please share your experiences with me. I don't know anyone at all with Narcolepsy at the moment.
Thx for reading <3

Well sucks you have to deal with it but glad you have a good outlook on things and hopefully the medication helps alot.

all my life ive personally knew 2 people with this .. one of them, he always gets picked by the lecturing doctor during classes .. hell, he doesn't even care if he is sleeping in a room full of cadavers ..
you just need to tell your boss about your condition and you'll be fine ..

I definitely got Necrophilia and Narcolepsy mixed up and thought this thread was going to be about you having sex with dead people... oops...
|
Well at least, if you look on the bright side, you're gonna get some nice stimulant medications. Enjoy your awesome Dexedrine prescription!

I didn't know this existed p_q That's how I feel, everyday. But my doctor just insists that I get more blood tests done, that I take more vitamins, that I get out and do more.
Doesn't help. ;__;

Every single day I feel like I'm not doing something legitimate or feel guilty about something for not doing it. At first I thought I was trying to be rebellious and just hated myself for being all dramatic and depressed constantly sine I wanted no part of everyday life and i just wanted SLEEP. But then Im in bed, tired of sleeping, but too tired to go do anything. I had blood tests done as well because they thought it was anemia maybe or mono. Blood tests showed that I showed indicated I was under a lot of stress and i started going on anti depressents since I was 'depressed'. They didnt really help all that much but I went to psychiatrists and such and talked to a bunch of people.
People tell me to excersise every day go out and do things but i just caant everyday. If this is what you feel like, you should really get some sleep tests done to see if you have a sleep disorder. When I sleep I dont get any rest from it, and it's been pretty destructive in my life. So definetly get it checked out if this sounds familiar

I don't know, maybe it's different. I call in sick for work or say i'm gonna be late so often because I'd rather sleep. I can't sleep for more than about 10 hours, but I definitely try and definitely wish I could. But I always wake up way more tired than when I went to bed. It makes it hard cause when I'm tired my mood goes up and down like there's no tomorrow. x__x
I had blood tests done cause they thought I had diabetes, cause they thought it was anemia, cause they think I have low iron or calcium. Idk. =________=''

That... sounds really not pleasant...
Funny thing is that I don't have narcolepsy and find myself sleeping more during the day than at night XD But at least I'm not "excessively sleepy" during the day.

Well anemia can very well make you feel tired a lot of the time my mum has it

Why does it sound like I have all your conditions?
Can you elaborate more on narcolepsy?
|
You should go study computer science. I don't have Narcolepsy yet I experience the same effects of it by the nature of my work.

Well considering I just found out about it I only know a bit from what I have researched and what the doctor told me.
Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder which is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Of course daytime sleepiness can be many other things such as insomnia or anxiety/stress related. From what I gather Narcoleptics enter the REM stage of sleep way faster than a regular person does. From my studies I entered REM within 3 minutes of falling asleep during my sleep test, almost every time I fell asleep, whereas most people do not experience REM sleep until after 90 minutes.
Now obviously this isn't normal but as to the problems that it can cause are several. Cataplexy is a sudden onset of weak muscles caused from intense emotion (laughter or crying or excitement) and this is the most memorable of the symptoms since even some dogs have it and make for adorable results :D
Narcoleptic Dog
Luckily I don't get cataplexy, as there are 2 types of narcolepsy. Narcolepsy with cataplexy, and without.
It seems in general university/college students have problems with sleep. Considering how much alcohol/caffiene/weed/nicotine/etc is consumed and the every day stress that everyone is under it is not surprising to me that people are having trouble staying awake in the daytime, but from what I understand Narcolepsy specifically is where you go into REM way too fast and a result proper sleep is never attained.

Hey mate its good to hear that you don't feel so guilty. For me, I am lazy I can never really be bothered to do anything. Not because I suffer from anything, but I am just lazy. Hopefully life will be good and lets hope you don't suffer from the cataplexy, because I couldn't imagine how lame that must be having your license taken away.
|
I sometimes feel like I'm a narcoleptic, but then I remember that's probably because I've had 8 hours of sleep in the last three days :x.
|
I've run reverse schedules and can't stay on schedule ever. I actually wonder a bit now... might be worth talking to a doctor about, but I don't need tons of testing in the middle of school, that just sounds stressful -_-

Wait a sec! Still sounds like you've got OSA! Can you tell me your BMI atleast?

26.5. I also have asthma tho, so that could play a factor

I have epilepsy, which is only mildly related, I use to get night terrors alot, and I remember doctors suggesting Narcolepsy, but they must have ruled it out, although it does feel most days like I'm narcoleptic. (In fact, they considered aspergers syndrome when I was a kid, I'm so special)
I'm glad that you don't have the cataplexy that can go with it, that can make driving a car ever difficult, the law varies from state to state, but in this country, if you have an episode you are in essence banned from driving for 3 years. Actually after looking this up to see if I was right, the law is kinda confusing.
