Just read the 'how viable is being a progamer' thread.
Here's the idea:
Every week, every TL member (at least 8271) buys at least one lottery ticket and puts it into the TL pool. This would be arbitrated by a trustworthy entity (I suggest Dr. Plott) and an elected council with eSports credentials (Day9, Wheat, Scoots, HotBid). The individual ticket holder/winner would not be revealed. The goal, ofc, is to win the lottery for the good of eSports. For example, the EuroMillions lottery jacket pot is £25 million/$40 million.
If the pool wins, the council uses the winnings to fund a Team League/Star League with the overall goal (rather than profit) being to employ or allow as many people to live off SC2 and play SC professionally as possible.
I would buy 10 tickets a week!
I present the motion for discussion.

Not every place has the same lottery(ies) I'm pretty sure... unless there's some universal international Lottery I'm unaware of.
|
Or the 8271 members could just give TL the money they would have spent on the tickets and TL would actually get something useful...
|
LW: That's why we go through a council, a dark council.
darkponcho: Ack, that's no fun. Plus we need a big cash injection to make it an industry. $100k would barely pay Wheat's salary.

Many lottery tickets at once >>>>> 1 per week. Much higher chances to win something, especially if it's coordinated (depending on the specific lottery system).
But actually it's stupid to give your money to a lottery company and hope that you get more money back. Especially as the number of tickets bought increases you basically can expect an overall loss.

Unless you find a lottery that gives you 1/10,000 odds you should expect a loss. Aren't most lotteries considerably worse than that? Like 1/1,000,000?
|
Lotteries are significantly worse odds than 1/1 million.
In fact lotteries are arguably the worst game in the gambling world in terms of percentage payback. if the Euromillion lottery jackpot is 40million then you can bet the odds of winning is going to be something worse than 1 in 100 million.
No offense, but this idea does not work at all.

actually, they're way worse...like in the tens of millions... For one of our local lotteries, the number of choices are 49 choose 7 which gives a probability of 1 in 85,900,584.
EDIT: Sigh, beat me to it..also I'm sorry if I may seem ignorant but I don't understand how you came to choose 8271?

I would rather see the money go to establishing a suitable investment portfolio which would pay for TL's operating costs.

The only way to raise money with something lottery related is to run your own lottery.
Say winner wins a new computer signed by some gaming team or something but you sell like 8k tickets or whatever.

A dollar per member and we got ourselves one handsome prize pool

Even if this worked out, I don't want to be party of a community that is built around a faulty understanding of probability.

Why 8271? Such a specific number

That and even if you luck in to a win, as much as I like TL, trusting randos on the internet with 8 figure sums is pretty damn terrible.

Sammler stopped reading the thread...hmmmm...maybe he was just joking or perhaps he just wanted to show how much a little contribution from everyone could make....?
pretty random fail though if it was serious
originally i thought he wanted to make a lottery for esports only...it would be interesting if you can have a 1/8271 chance of winning 2K and the other 6K goes to a prize pool...

This would make HUGE profits....
....for the lottery companies in our respective countries.

Aigoo. You guys are a morbid bunch.
