I agree. Thousands of applications and they take the time to see a list of favorites and use that to determine character? I doubt it.
Thinking of it from a business perspective, you want to accept as many people as possible. While you want to maintain an institution of academic excellence and can't accept EVERYONE, you can take everyone above a certain threshold of GPA, test scores, and transcripts. I can only ever see them using that information in the event of a borderline acceptance/denial or if you ever went in to meet with a school official they can look it up and use it as an icebreaker. Plus, now the University can say for certain using discrete examples that they have a diverse campus.
