Hey everyone, the third episode of SC2N is up, and you can view it here:
Starcraft 2 n00b - episode 3
This is actually a pretty good match compared to the previous ones I've posted. It's a ZvZ, and I did fairly well throughout, especially at the beginning, IMO, but I made one crucial mistake throughout the game: I didn't defend my base -- or my nat -- properly. So, despite playing overall relatively well, I lost because my opponent had some good harasses and never once allowed me to get my expansion going (on Scrapyard).
This is the first game that I've literally been starved out. At GG, my base itself was fine, but I actually ran out of minerals and simply could not produce any more units.
Lessons learned:
1. If turtling and defending, place spine crawlers near the mineral line, not simply at the ramp -- especially when playing against Zerg.
2. When turtling/defending, produce multiple queens.
[EDIT] 3. Don't forget to move spine crawlers when they prove to be in an ineffective spot.[/EDIT]

I'm pretty sure you 9 pooled vs. his late pool.
It doesn't quite make sense on long distances, short air maps to do a rush. Your attack killed one maybe two drones (can't tell, press L in the future when you're trying to figure it out, its hard to tell otherwise), and you sacc'ed a bunch of economy for that. Not only that but you only got those kills because your opponent mismicro'd, his pool was up for long enough.
A spine crawler costs larvae and lots of resources in general so getting them was probably not a good idea especially because you already threw down a roach warren. One of is sufficient against harass, both is not a good idea because you delay lair tech, you lose lots of drones, those two things overlap each other in usefulness, etc.
Also, you had the income tab out for a long time and I don't think you noticed that he was up by like 400 minerals income per minute vs you. The problem is that you mined far too much gas that you weren't using (and because of lost drones that you didn't replace). Also, hydras without roaches aren't very good. Especially against roaches. Also, I think you forgot speed.
Your commentary was pretty cool but I think you're not analyzing things in the best way which is ok if you're learning too. I'll watch again whenever you have a new one out ^^

Thanks for all the advice dbc. That definitely helps.

Ah you are playing random and not straight up T? Well that has both its positives and negatives I guess. Nice to see another vid though ^^
Couple of thoughts (though I've never really played Z):
Initial harass wasn't quite as effective as you thought, in fact once you dropped that spinecrawler his supply is already pushing back past yours.
Midgame you lose a lot of drones to harass/buildings and seem scared to repopulate because of his pressure. You really need to get that worker count back up because without the economy there's no way you can build enough to hold him off and actually get an expansion running.
As said I don't play Z, but I think a roach opening transitioning into roach/hydra is preferential to lings into ling/hydra (ling into ling/baneling?)

Thanks Asha. Yeah, I do play random always. Good points about my harass. You're right. I think that even when I made the video, I thought it was more effective than it actually was. I'll have to stop that on scrapyard I guess.
I simply wasn't thinking when I failed to make more drones. Maybe I was at first more focused on building on army to ward off an attack, but then I just forgot. Need to focus more on that next time.
