A friend asked for recommendations on various forms of entertainment. Providing tips on movies, shows and the like was no problem. Just name a handful of the ones that pop into your mind when you mention or reference around friends and they respond with admitting they have never seen it and you give them the look, "how the hell is that possible, its so good!" Piece of cake. But with video games it's a whole 'nother beast. At least for me. I take video games seriously. Therefore before school and my internship starts and I find myself with no free time I will put upon myself the daunting task of composing the chronology of my gaming history.
Where the fuck do I even start. Admittedly my base knowledge is as large if not larger than the others requested combined. Alphabetical is to daunting and boring to do to even consider. IF I were to organize by genre or console I know there will be gems missed that don't quite fit into one genre or that span multiple consoles. And just spouting off a list in order also doesn't do justice to the context of how and why a game might be great.
I think the best way to do this is to compartmentalize this into gaming era's. I'm thinking of how to organize the eras right now so bear with me. I think tentatively my gaming era's will be:
* Prepubescent Pre-console - DOS games for those of you who don't know what that is just know that the mouse is a glorious invention in conjunction with windows and other like OS. Digger, Zork, Super Solvers
* Selective Super Nintendo - This is when my behavior for being super selective regarding getting new video games began. The last metroid is in captivity...
* Moar Bits!!! I can haz 64 Nao - I enter the "next gen" era finally but I don't know what to do with the third handle on my N64 controler
* Death of the Nerdy Shy Kid Now I'm a GAMER - What's that Cain? Sure I'll stay a while and listen. OH SHIT HE JUST STABBED AERIES!
* Where I am now - The realization that Starcraft:Broodwar is the greatest game ever and that Starcraft 2 is good but might not be up to the task yet (good thing there are two more expansions scheduled). Getting a 360 after years of quiet observation. Discovering Pokemon almost 15 years after the fact.
Of course some eras overlap for a bit but for the most part the transitions are rather distinct. I really want to finish this self imposed project so I you see that I haven't done shit in 1-2 weeks just ask how my progress is and that should help me out immensely.
