Apart from the Ample vs Shine match that was pretty amazing, the other matches were.... subpar to put it lightly. Ofc these streamers can't hold a candle against actual pros or heck high level amateurs on the ladder but I guess the entertainment value that these university leagues outweigh the quality of broodwar these leagues have. It also brings them a ton of cash too as seen with the data in the OP, even more than the daily proleagues shockingly enough. Perhaps the foreign scene can do such things as well? But IDK if there are streamers who are willing to do these kinds of leagues.

1. The university tournaments show who is best at teaching starcraft, not playing it. The ability to teach is a skill itself that has real value. 2. Koreans have this certain attraction to being loyal fans of $insert group of people$, e.g. kpop. In starcraft, pro teams are no longer a thing, so this works as a fun surrogate. 3. There is some entrenched misogyny in Korean culture, which this reinforces. The coaching streams place the male in the position of respected teacher, while the girl is always the lowly, clueless student. The actual games and post-game feedback are pretty much just the males berating the females too.

I remember watching a JSA match a few days back, forgot which team they were against, and they lost. Ample was shitting on the girls so hard that it really irritated me and turned off the stream. Ofc I couldn't understand Korean so I don't know what he's actually saying to the girls but it sounded really harsh. Really felt bad for the girls that they were given this kind of treatment.

After all, it is possible that most of this money is going to the owners of these universities and not necessarily to the streamers and pros involved. Maybe the pros have higher pay than the streamers? But i would imagine the leads of these universities get the bulk of it. Maybe.

the reality is that no one gives a fuck about some no name random amateur male starcraft player. but pretty girl playing starcraft? views and money. the girls get berated pretty harshly sometimes but its usually pretty justified. if you see that a female streamer is just coasting along and using the university as a means to rake in money without actually applying herself, why wouldnt you get pissed off? the coaches want to see some level of professionalism from the girls regardless of their skill level, because at the end of the day the university content is still a competition. there are some girls who take it pretty seriously and try to improve but there are others that are pretty much staring into empty space when they play and just use the content for their personal gain. these are the girls that get shit on and called out when they inevitably lose.

I don't know what they are saying in those streams, but it also doesn't seem to be a sexist show in general ("haha, women can't play video games"), at least that doesn't seem to be the main theme (the contrary rather) but might show up in the commentary/post-game scolding, and mostly in chat commentary presumably. edit: On second thought: In that picture below, the whole placement (women in back, guys in front), the chatter distribution (95% guys) is really awkward for western eyes. I want to be careful and not universalize my views too much but it's hard to watch sometimes. Over-the-top political ideologies might still stem from good, more differenciated sociological or cultural observations though. SK has really big problems with sexism (like most countries, to different degrees), noone should deny that. But if I think of that and SOOP, then these shows come to mind with 1-2 (male) hosts and dozens of generic model-beauties sitting around passively until they're allowed to stand up and do some moves. They chose to be there, surely, but the whole thing is just a disgrace to exist.

On the other side, the girls of (of JSA, the loser team) are getting scolded and crying on stream. I can see why it's uncomfortable to watch for some. Also is that Zelot? who is also getting lectured by the manager lol. Also what the fuck is this Mong: + Show Spoiler + ![]()
