I had an interesting discussion brought up by my friend when he told me he was going to "go out to play chess and nerd it up a bit". So we have come to a disagreement on whether its more nerdy to sit at home in front of your computer playing games (specifically sc2), OR actually leaving your house to perform a 'nerdy activity' in this case chess.
Poll: Which is nerdier? (NEW WORDS)Going out to nerd it up (play chess) (47) 68% Nerding it up at home infront of your comptuer (SC2 mainly) (22) 32% 69 total votes Your vote: Which is nerdier? (NEW WORDS) (Vote): Going out to nerd it up (play chess) (Vote): Nerding it up at home infront of your comptuer (SC2 mainly)

I'm going to have to agree with him.
Playing Sc2 (and even more so laddering BW on ICCup) is much more manly than a game of chess. Take for example these google images: + Show Spoiler + + Show Spoiler +
Chess is the nerdy activity.
|
everyone nerds out when they're alone.
taking your nerddom to the streets is extraordinarily nerdy.
Just like sitting at home in front of your computer playing games isn't nearly as nerdy as your friends coming over for a LAN and doing it with you.
|
I voted for the wrong thing, this needs to be fixed.
SCRATCH THAT I'll just agree with everyone because my reputation is more important than my own person opinion. YEAAAAAH
|
Playing chess is nerdier, IMO.
I'd date like, half the pro-SC/SC2 players in a second. Chess players.. .................. ...........
Yeah.
|
Well nerding it up in front of your computer is sort of sad T_T.
I am also sort of sad.

You are clearly biased. I google image searched "chess player" and "starcraft player". Boxer also played both BW and sc2 so it makes sense to pick him out of the results.

What answer do you really think a starcraft 2 forum is going to give?
|
Doing anything alone is nerdier. Going out to play/LANing with friends is less nerdy than laddering.
|
At my high school quizbowl tournaments, we usually play chess AND starcraft broodwar during our by games and so I think that I reach the ultimate level of nerdiness.

what the fuck. no it's not.
Go talk to a jock. say the following two following statements.
a. "I played videogames last night" b. "i went to a video game convention called WCG - basically the olympics of video games - so i could hang out with other people who also wanted to watch my favourite e-sports athletes duke it out big screens."
which do you really think is going to get the return statement of "holy fucking nerd".
Infact, now i am curious. I am going to ask my soccer team what they think is nerdier (between nerding alone or nerding with others).
I'm telling you, the concentrated a space is with nerd, the more nerdy it is. It's basic logic.
|
What's with all the chess hate?
And if you think that "jocks" don't play chess - ~10% of my highschool's football team was also in the chess club. I was on the team, and I was the fucking captain of the chess club even.....
And when I was going for the Uni team, I found out that there was a similar ratio as well.....
Maybe we're just an exception, but yea.....

durrrrrr
It's like what Mora is saying~
Watching Anime by yourself, not nerdy. Going to an anime convention to watch anime with others? Nerdyy!
|
Nerdieness in chess = 0 < any video game.
but yea... it's a starcraft forum so obviously most of the people will be super biased.

I think it has to do with the level of commitment. It's like staying at home to watch a sports game, or going out to an arena and paying money to watch a sports game live. There's a different level of commitment.
Playing a game at home is casual.
Going out to competitively play a game with other people and putting in all that effort shows a devotion and commitment that makes you exponentially nerdier.
Let's compare shall we: + Show Spoiler + Exhibit A: Nerd Alone.
Versus:
+ Show Spoiler + Exhibit B: Very many Nerds.
As we can see, the Concentration of Nerdiness for an activity/event increases based on the following formula (#nerds/(area))^n, where n is the Nerdiness Constant for said event.
There is also the Social Awkwardness factor of Nerdiness. The higher the Concentration of Nerdiness, the higher the Social Awkwardness factor becomes, as nerds are forced to interact with others. In his man(or woman) cave, the nerd is king of all things, and is full of self confidence on the internet. Thrust into a social situation however, the nerd becomes withdrawn, making him appear even more nerdy.
As such, we can mathematically, scientifically, and rigourously prove that being a Lonely Nerd is less nerdy than being a Social Nerd. A twisted fact of life, yes, but one that hopefully elucidates the point of the OP.
|
The term nerd is obviously used in a different context when it was first coined. I think of "nerd" as someone who's studious and solitary. I define "geek" as someone with an intense dedication to something. By my definition, I would call someone who watches anime a geek and someone who purely studies in their spare time a nerd.
Since nerd connotes solitarity to me, the level of nerdiness depends on how solitary the activity is. Hence:

Playing Chess isn't even nerdy in the first place.
Contrary to popular belief the vast majority of nerds don't even have a cursory knowledge of Chess.
Go on any Chess site and look at the people there, they often have little interest in things like video games, anime, and fantasy novels.
Likewise, go to websites dedicated to any of the things I just mentioned and ask around for Chess players, you'll often be met with blank stares.
With that said I agree that going out to do nerdy things is much nerdier then staying in and doing them alone but Chess is not a good example of something "nerdy".
