Not long ago I started feeling really ill, went to the hospital and got diagnosed with Colitis. After a week at the hospital and losing 45 pounds I had a surgery, removing my entire large intestine. Now I have a Colostomy, which is basically a bag on my stomach.
Not me, but this is pretty much what it looks like on me: + Show Spoiler +
I was sceptical first, but now I'm only thankful to the bag that saved my life. In a few months, if all goes well, I'm gonna have another surgery and remove the bag, and everything will practically go back to normal (without the large intestine).
I've also realized surgeries are good. I used to be really scared of having a surgery, but since it saved me and made me well, I'm not anymore. Can't wait 'til next surgery lol.
So I was wondering if there's any other people on TL who has had or have a colostomy?

Wow, ouch
You don't need your large intestine?

That sounds horrible, hope you get better
What does the bag do btw?

Apparently the only thing it does is remove all the liquid, so it's gonna be just like normal, except a little more.... watery.

It gathers up the poop pretty much lol, then you open it and empty it in the toilet... almost like normal

The real question is can you be pose as seductively as that girl while wearing a poop bag?!??
That's good that you're ok. So what did they do to stretch the bag between your small intestine and the rest of your innards?? That's a pretty big hole to fill.
And also, don't they typically reserve surgery as a last resort, or had you already exhausted all other options?
good luckl!

Yeah, I was at the hospital for 1 week taking all kinds of medicines, usually they work for most people, but not for me apparently. I became thinner and thinner over the week and couldn't eat at all, and went to the bathroom like 15 times a day... >_>
Had the surgery at a saturday, I was told: "Normally we don't do surgeries in the weekends, but you wouldn't have made it until monday". My face: O_o
Well, the end ~1 inch of the small intestine sticks out outside my stomach and it's over that part the bag is put on (I change it like once every 3 days).
It felt very alien at first, but now I got used to it lol.
Also I'm amazed how the doctors just sees the body as like any machine lol, they can put the parts together almost however they need to... I have a great respect for doctors now.

wow
Im feeling very uncomfortable after reading this lol
My best wishes, you will be fine :D

Added bonus; if someone punches you in the stomach, shit explodes on his hand. Serves him right!
So you have a hole in your stomach with this bag plugged on? Doesn't that hurt or is in danger of getting infected due to feces passing through? I can't quite imagine how the transition from organic to synthetic material works in a leak-proof manner.

It's a pretty common surgery actually. Bottom line, you attach the end of the small intestines or large intestines to the wall of the abdomen. It can be reversed in a lot of cases, you basically reattach the small intestines to the rectum. It's not as bad as it sounds, your intestines are basically like piping, and the human body has an astonishing capacity for adapting to the new arrangement.
Zoler are you sure it's a colostomy and not an ileostomy? By the way, it's awesome that you agreed to do it, some patients don't, and UC has a very high risk of Colon CA. It's better to just take out the large intestines and live with the colostomy/ileostomy for as long as you need to until they reverse it. Good luck!

I was surprised to how many that have this inflammation and the surgery! They told me in Sweden there are around 30'000 people that has a stomy, (total amount of people in Sweden is around 9 million).
Yeah, it's probably an ileostomy, I just didn't know the right word for it in english. ^^ Well, I was really so ill from the disease, the surgery came as a relief.

Depending on where the new exit is placed it is either an ileostomy or colostomy. The waste from an ileostomy is very watery compared to that of a colostomy.
It's pretty common. I've cared for a lot of people with colostomy/ileostomy bags and it's very easy to manage. For a bed bound patient having a colostomy is much easier (much like having a catheter would be as well) but it is an unfortunate condition.
I'm glad to hear they'll be undoing it in surgery, a lot of people have to live with it for the rest of their lives which can be a pretty big bummer especially for someone as young as you.

The ass is just a trash chute. A colostomy/ileostomy just makes a new trash chute higher up on your abdomen.

It's an ileostomy then =)
So you work as a nurse or at a elderly home I suppose, DoctorHelvetica?

So you work as a nurse or at a elderly home I suppose, DoctorHelvetica? I'm a CNA. I did work at a nursing home/physical rehab for a while but I'm working at Target now. I'll be looking for another nursing job this spring.
