I really like you as a player; you play extremely well and are mechanically solid. Tonight, while taking a break from studying for exams, I was watching your stream. I enjoy it, really.
It was you vs. oGsInca. He went some kind of 4 warp zealots and because (as always) you were too drone heavy, you couldn't stop the attack. After about 15 seconds of trying to stop the attack with the few lings you had, you left the game without gg.
Typical, so I didn't really much of it.
The problem was when Inca messaged you saying "no gg?" or something to that extent, and you replied like a fucking loser nerd with a bunch of excuses. BOO FUCKITTY HOO. You lost... QQ more.
You aren't BM, actually. You're just a kid who can't accept a loss as his own fault. When YOU lose, it just fucking HAS to be the other guy doing something unorthodox that's defined by your so-called "standard" play.
So I switched to Huk's stream for the FIRST time (yeah, your stream was actually the ONLY stream I've been watching) and was surprised that he started off many, if not all, of his games with a "hello, gl hf." Quite pleasant actually.
Simple conventional in-game greeting.
I'm still your fan and I'll cheer for you in games, but you need to grow some balls and become a little more mature. Goddamn, you're supposed to be a fucking professional. If you're trying to set yourself apart by having this "BM" image, I don't think it will get you far. Sure it's giving you all this attention in the short-run, but in the long-run how would that image work out for you?

I don't mind his BM, but that's completely different than if he's consistently making lame excuses for losses instead of attempting to understand why he lost.
Not saying "gg" and not learning from a lost game are two entirely different things (and I only know for sure that Idra does the former, because I don't watch his stream, though I really should ). The former won't prevent you from becoming a better gamer mechanically; it's just having respect for others.

I'm convinced he will never EVER win anything big (GSLs and other tournaments with heavy Korean competition) unless he evolves his mindset. His mindset is holding him back and it's a shame to see.

If you are referring to IdrA telling his opponents off, I think thats actually very common in sports. Soccer with disputes over fouls, you see them shout at eachother frequently, having teammates hold them back cuz they wanna get in eachothers faces etc. It happens more when its not the top level like say the world cup (where it still happens, like that game with the two south american teams, they almost started fighting in the dug out lol). Then in those sports you also have people doing physical abuse, pushing, kicking, elbow in the face what not. It comes with the nature of competition.

I dont mind his BM, oGsInca and Idra have both Code S, so they can face each other at the GSL Code S tournament and we as spectators have more fun watching them because they have kind of a history now
But on one note, I think one of the reasons this is such a big deal is because IdrA is a progamer in Korea. Actually, this doesn't just apply to Korea but "If you want respect, you give it". IdrA is like being a Charles Barkley, he's not modest, he's bad-mannered, and just because he lost (it doesn't matter if it actually was fair or not, he still lost) doesn't mean he has to demean his opponent.
Korean society is huge on respect and giving credit to your competition, and IdrA does nothing but BM his opponent? That's slightly out of hand... Although I'm also his fan, I'm a fan of his play style and records, not his manners. If some foreigner comes to the Korean scen and just yells f**k you and piss off just because he lost to a cheesy play isn't going to get him anywhere.

I love Idras BM, computer games lack the emotion that sports have. BM generates dramatic tension, you cheer for the BM player if you agree with him (i.e. Mass reapers idras rants) or for the BM'ed player if you disagree.
I like Idra and his style but i think atleast versus some top koreans he shouldn't BM because he allready has a bad reputation and that makes training vs top korean pros even more dificult.

It's like Jose Mourinho in football (soccer for you US ppl). Many people hate him, many people love him. Before him I watched football for the sake of just watching it. Now 60-70% of the time I watch football because of Mourinho. The guy is a genius, BM and all.
Same goes for IdrA, I like his playing style, I like how he's being real.

I was definitely confused how that OP got the spotlight. I'm glad I scrolled down to see the comments because most of the time I don't want to see responses to this stuff. Then someone went and won the internet for the day :D
rekrul called him linear frankenstein at some point... i really fail to understand how IdrA continued to be ignorant of asynchronous and counter-intuitive game styles, even though he was led step-by-step by rekruls impeccable logic.
Also his "bad manners" i blame on a lot of misplaced angst. And don't think i am allergic to "bm", as most of the StarCraft community cause i am not. I really like nerd raging and nerd drama, but the way IdrA does it, it reeks of misplaced angst and self issues.
Advice to IdrA: You will never be top class gamer unless you accept the arrhythmical aspect of the game. StarCraft is not an equation to be solved. If you want to solve equations you should have stayed in your college in America, and not seek a career in the e-sports scene.

In the stream Idra BM'ed Inca because that was the 2nd time in a row ladder matched them up, and the first time Inca cannon rushed him then tried to void ray rush, which Idra held of brilliantly with a backdoor push with hydra ling on shakuras plateau. After the battle Inca left without saying gg and idra messaged him after the game whilst searching for his next 1v1 saying "gg yo". The he got matched up with Inca again and Inca 2 gate rushed him, which Idra held off completely. He then proceeded to drone too hard and inca just transitioned into mass zealots (like 20+ zealot timing attack) with no stalker or sentry or anything. So idra just saw it come and ragequit without gg.
The inca messaged him after the game asking why no gg this time? In my eyes it looked like Inca was trying to provoke him there, but Idra bmed back with a "of course no gg to that fucking gay shit" or something along those lines.
I dunno, in the context of the stream and Idra's personality it made sense (the bm exchange). the OP missed the first game where Inca cannon cheese Idra. Unfortunately no screenies but anyone else who watched the stream can vouch for me.

Here's the thing: if you don't like him you don't have to cheer for him. It's not like he doesn't know he's pissing some people off. You can argue about whether the game needs some BM or not, but in the end it doesn't matter.
Maybe BM is bad. But the type of condescension some people are showing about it is far worse.

Didn't he play Inca in the game prior to the one where Inca zealot rushed?
In the first game IdrA played Inca during that ladder session, Inca cheese cannon rushed IdrA and he held it off like a boss and won with solid play. Inca did not gg in that game, They play each other shortly thereafter on Delta, I believe, and Inca proceeded to abuse the map imbalance and zealot rushed IdrA. IdrA did not gg in return, and then Inca showed the real bm by pming Idra after their second match during that ladder session.
That all being said, and please correct me if any of the above is incorrect, IdrA should have seen some kind of cheese rush like that coming. I mean, of course Inca was going to do something ridiculous like zealot rush a fast expanding zerg (the smart play by Inca).
Also, how is it not obvious to you that people get upset and react according to their emotions?? People take this game, and many others very seriously. Losing always sucks, no matter what sport or game you are playing. I'd rather see personalities reacting in a way that shows they care about what they are doing.

XellOs once swore in front of the camera after a loss, and got pounded for that "stunt" even though he was apologetic afterwards and really was just frustrated with a loss. Idra's attitude is so piss poor to fellow competitors and fans it just makes me want to hurl. Added on top of the fact that he trashes everyone who isn't at the proleague level and his general snubbing of lower ranked players adds up to a pretty disgusting combination of arrogance, immaturity and crude humor.
Now normally, I wouldn't care, but the fact that he lives and trains in Korea is a big problem for me. The number of progamers in Korea from other countries is small (probably no more than 20) because of this, he really represents western e-sports to korea. Do we really want a whining, arrogant, nerd representing us, or someone who is not only good, but sociable, polite, and doesn't trash the competition? If a Korean came to American and acted like he did, I am 100% sure that we would not want a lot of Koreans coming over.
Let IdrA trash talk in America, once he proves that he can win (MLG, WCG, etc) or he can get his act together (unlikely), he can go back. Until then, let him be hidden away at home so that our talented and friendly players get highlighted, not a bitter, arrogant, and snobbish one.

If you ever attend a sporting event and sit near the field/ice/court or watch on TV and read lips you'll hear/see plenty of curses from players after plays, even some well respected ones. You'll see them jawing at the refs too, and they don't usually get a technical foul unless they get kinda out-of-hand. And if you got a chance to be in a locker room after a game, there will be TONS of shouting, cursing, slamming of lockers, throwing of chairs...
I don't know what's up with epidemic of humorless pinheads trying to hold players and commentators up to some impossible standard of etiquette. It's really getting fucking old.

XellOs once swore in front of the camera after a loss, and got pounded for that "stunt" even though he was apologetic afterwards and really was just frustrated with a loss. Idra's attitude is so piss poor to fellow competitors and fans it just makes me want to hurl. Added on top of the fact that he trashes everyone who isn't at the proleague level and his general snubbing of lower ranked players adds up to a pretty disgusting combination of arrogance, immaturity and crude humor.
Now normally, I wouldn't care, but the fact that he lives and trains in Korea is a big problem for me. The number of progamers in Korea from other countries is small (probably no more than 20) because of this, he really represents western e-sports to korea. Do we really want a whining, arrogant, nerd representing us, or someone who is not only good, but sociable, polite, and doesn't trash the competition? If a Korean came to American and acted like he did, I am 100% sure that we would not want a lot of Koreans coming over.
Let IdrA trash talk in America, once he proves that he can win (MLG, WCG, etc) or he can get his act together (unlikely), he can go back. Until then, let him be hidden away at home so that our talented and friendly players get highlighted, not a bitter, arrogant, and snobbish one.
I guess he can go back now. Good thing you put these rules in place.

Idra has been known for his BM/Nerdrage for years, I doubt he'll ever straighten up. I still remember when SDM got pissed off at Idra during a SC live match at gom because he was chatting in-game.
I understand getting angy when you lose. But the OP is right, Idra goes beyond losing and all the way down into acting like a child. I mean, you get mad at your opponent for all-inning you on a 4 gate, but if worked. Then almost every ZvP you do you make mass roaches and macro up without really focusing on what they're doing. I like idra. I enjoy watching his games. I like watching his interviews and listening to SotG when he's on. Overall, I enjoy his insight on starcraft. I would like him to straighten himself out with the BM, but he isn't going to do that unless he sees a reason to. He has a team that loves him, he still makes friends with other players, and he has a fan base. If he actually saw this behavior as overall harmful, he'd probably stop (that at least would be the smart thing to do). Heck, people love him for his BM. It's part of his image.

I've been working as a designer/illustrator for 10 years. Right now I'm managing a multi-million dollar project and managing a team consisting of five design firms, a landscape architect and two architects.
I'm not qualified to opine about IdrA's gameplay or strategies, but I have an opinion about 'professionalism' in general that's worth considering.
The thing is, I WAS AN IDRA. All throughout school and my early career, I was busting my ass. I was pulling 24 hour days every other week. I took design so personally and seriously, I was notorious. I had a reputation for being brutally honest, and talking insane smack about other designers and their work. I cared a great deal about design, and didn't understand anyone who didn't take it as seriously as I did.
And while people respected me, I slowly started to notice that people didn't want to work with me.
IdrA restricts most of his BM on the ladder, but I think it helps to realize who IdrA is laddering against. This isn't Darkforce1879 or BronzeRandom2938. He's laddering against OGS's. Fou's. Primes.
Whether he likes it or not, these are his peers and colleagues. The ladder might as well be the office he works at, every single day.
And he's calling them faggots and telling them to fuck off whenever someone zealot rushes him.
Great for the fans. Bad for his career. If I talked about people in my industry the way IdrA does, I'd be considered unemployable. People wouldn't touch me with a ten foot pole.
Now, let's imagine [knock on wood] that something happens to EG. They have a bad year and they implode. Shit happens. What team is going to pick up IdrA?
Team Liquid? They share a house with OGS.
FXOpen? They just started a week ago.

There are 32 S-Code players in the world. That's 32 jobs, 32 people on the same level as IdrA, 32 people that make a living playing SC2 full-time. We like to pretend that the SC community is huge, but most of us are on the outside looking in. The community of players and commentators that make a full-time living is actually very small.
Now, I'm not saying IdrA should change, or not be 'honest'. But there's a difference between being honest and indulging yourself for shits and giggles.
The only benefit IdrA gets from telling someone to fuck off is those two-seconds of self-satisfaction after you say it.
Meanwhile, he's torching relationships with people that he competes with, day in and day out.
Trust me, it's not worth it.

If I signed Idra to a $50 million contract, as an employer I would have no choice BUT to accept him, BM or not. I can't move or buy-out $50 M. But let's say I sign Idra to a contract worth $50,000 a year -- there's a long line of players gladly willing to replace him, and the loss to me, while painful, isn't catastrophic.
Also, I would say that while IdrA is a great player, there is a slight chance that he is NOT the next Michael Jordan or Barry Bonds of SC2.
Anyway, BM'ing is a waste of IdrA's energy and beneath him. He doesn't have to like everybody and be everyone's buddy, but his life would be a lot easier if he let his game do the talking.

I do agree with you, but his attitude and distractions/chemistry problems he would have brought to any clubhouse were also probably very big factors on why no teams showed interest. IdrA's ability to refrain from calling people faggots to their face is a tremendous achievement, and should be commended. I had forgotten how much determination and dedication that takes.
Personally, it took me years to mature to this point. I was sitting at home, listless, trying to figure out what to do with my life, and realized, "You know what? Maybe I'll do the world a favor and not call anyone a faggot today. I'll just keep it online, where I interact with my professional peers and colleagues on a regular basis."

I think IdrA will never be as good as he could be until he learns to accept defeat and failure.
In this world, success is valued so much that people tend to think that they are only cared or loved if they succeed. If one believes that to be true, every competition becomes a lot more serious because being worth of receiving attention is at stake. The fear of failing and not receiving what one needs crumbles the ability to play to the fullest. When one has combined success with being cared and loved then not succeeding becomes something unbearable. One way to deal with this unbearable feeling is to deny defeat and failure. I think this is the case with IdrA.

You see, that a good compromise. Dude obviously needs to vent. IdrA could easily just type insane trash about a game for himself and his fans, not press enter, and leave the game without saying anything.

Being gm/bm during games is an indication of how much class one has. Some have class, some do not. IdrA's a excellent player, but he may just lack some class. I don't think its a question if he's BM or not, he absolutely is. Not gg'ing is as polite as IdrA gets.
It would be a shame if IdrA is remembered more for his BM than his actual success as a player. And that's not the community's fault. That's IdrA's.
You train people how to treat you, man. If you troll and curse out every other Pro player on the ladder, yeah, I think people are going to talk about your attitude. And you can't expect people to be diplomatic about it, because IdrA certainly isn't.
I don't care personally how many people he offends or talks shit about or what-have-you, but IdrA should, because it's going to have an impact on his long term interests and legacy as a player.
And unless he plans on making enough cash off tournaments to retire -- in this economy, he'd need to win at least 12 GSL tourneys -- than he should probably lighten up. Or at least vent privately to his buds about how bullshit a player is.

We like to pretend that the SC community is huge, but most of us are on the outside looking in. The community of players and commentators that make a full-time living is actually very small.
Now, I'm not saying IdrA should change, or not be 'honest'. But there's a difference between being honest and indulging yourself for shits and giggles.
The only benefit IdrA gets from telling someone to fuck off is those two-seconds of self-satisfaction after you say it.

He only BM in ladder. Although he does talk Pessimistically IRL, he doesn't BM IRL, just when he is chatting online. He has paid his substantial contribution to society by not BMing when he talks to people facetoface. Advising him to stop his BM completely is practically telling him to live a lie. He has self-respect, his a non-conformist, the only person who dictates how he should live is himself, as it should be.
The only reason why he does not BM IRL is because he does not have the guts to do so. It is easy to call somebody a faggot when you are hiding behind a screen where nobody can touch you. My words do not carry much weight in this forum so please search for "foreigners still suck" authored by rekrul. That is one of the epic blogs that talks about accepting your losses like a man.

I couldn't agree more with the OP. Idra seems to always blame his losses on his opponents rather than himself. Instead of analyzing his mistakes, he criticizes them for playing "standard" or whining about how zerg is UP.
As a result of all this, I try to avoid EG and its sponsors like the plague. I know its not much, but I feel like its some sort of statement. If you lack professionalism, it will put your sponsors in a bad spotlight. I know it will never happen, but my dream is for Idra to go on some sort of rampage and be dropped by EG.

Very interesting thread. it's amazing how the team liquid community can give reader an interesting insight on such important thing as professionnalism and the way people should act with their peers. I have no problem in my professionnal life, but I am having a hard time trying to explain someone close to me that she should shut the fuck up with her colleagues. Her ego always take the best of her, and she usually end up by showing how others are not at "her" level, even if they are way older. Because of that, she already lost 3 job in a few months... So, for me Idra is a good player, but he has maybe a little problem with his ego (like most of the first nerd generation, that was my case back in the days when I was playing to flee from school and such).
Yes, it is indeed normal to care about the game and be nervous about loosing... insulting is okay too and even saying that your opponent was not that good is okay. But always resorting to insult and taunt when you get owned, when you know that a lot of people is looking at your game, when you know that many guys will read your interview, is the mark of a flaw: he just can't control himself.
One should explain to him: loosing does not mean being bad at the game. Get confident man, you're good. Accept defeat as it is: a moment, a context that does not take away your accomplishment and what you are.

Seriously though, I admire IdrA as a player; he's very methodical, very confident, very strong overall, the kind of player I want to be. There's a reason he was among the only foreigners in the proleagues for so long. But as a professional, even on the ladder, he needs to learn to at least keep his rage away from his opponents. I hear him whining about imba this imba that too often, and whether it's true or not, it's not professional. He's right -- if you don't get mad at a loss, you don't care enough, but you need to be angry at your own performance, not at your opponent.

Don't get me wrong -- I LOVE the fact that he answers questions about other players honestly in interviews, and he's not afraid to be critical. No one expects him to change his opinion or lie or kiss people's asses.

There's a whole spectrum of ways to handle a situation, be yourself and voice your opinion. He can still be as critical and onery as he wants to be, without resorting to acting ... well, childish.

BOO FUCKITTY HOO. Go get a group hug and get it over with. Why should he say a GG if the game ended so quickly so as not to make it actually a good game? Words have meaning, you know. They're not tools to be fake nice - they are tools to express truths. If the game was not good there's not reason why someone should say gg. That just makes them a robot.
Words are used to communicate truths, lies, and everything in-between. You make absolutely no sense. The reason you 'gg' at the end of the game is not to affirm that it was a 'good game' - it's simply the universal term for conceding in video games.
And if the other player takes your 'gg' literally, what's the harm in that? You will actually feel better about yourself if you're manner every game you play. No point to being hateful. I actually make it a point to say 'gg wp' every game I can stand to type it. I like giving the other player true satisfaction in the win, making me feel good as well.
That being said, I'm willing to bet IdrA was verbally abused by his father (not to be a downer). He's mentioned before that his dad still doesn't approve of his career choice, which isn't too abnormal - but from how he has talked about his father (so very little) I get the feeling he doesn't support Greg at all.
I can see where Idra is coming from with his BM. It's not like he BMs when he is cheesed in tournament games, because tornament games are all about winning. But when someone does a build that can be executed by a platinum level player and wins with it , it doesnt deserve a good game or whatever. Becuse there was no skill behind it, just luck.
Epic bump, I remember reading this blog. Why I didn't leave a reply, I don't know. Probably because anything I could have said would have been vastly inferior to the first reply to this blog.
