here is the short story behind it: one of my best friends recorded an album over the summer. he played every instrument and wrote 95% of it. it's well produced and, finally, now it is done. the promotion machine is about to start up in earnest and i figured, hey, why not post it to tl?
the album is pretty eclectic but some similar and/or influential artists are: kid cudi, notorious big, radiohead, elliott smith (listen for it).. i told you, eclectic.
aviators, the single, is your standard club-bumping fare, designed for mass sales but trust me - it goes deeper than that. give everything a chance.
The White Rhino is Julian Rhine, a rapper born and raised in Brooklyn. Rhino’s music begins in hip-hop and takes you to a new, emerging genre—an undefined space occupied by stars such as Kid Cudi, B.o.B, and Kanye West. One important distinction: Rhino wrote and performed nearly the entirety of the infectious sounds and impeccable arrangements on his eponymous debut album. You can hear the hard work in Rhino’s explosive sound.
Rhino has had no greater influence than the biggest, most diverse city in America: New York, his home, and Brooklyn, his heart. As the always ascendant New York music scene continues to birth new styles and stars, Rhino has absorbed divergent and classic sounds from The Beatles to Elliott Smith, Nirvana to Radiohead, Phoenix to the Notorious B.I.G. to R.A. the Rugged Man and beyond. Genre labels are meaningless to him and he exercises his talent for flexibility and transcendence in every song. The sounds and styles weaved together in his debut come together to form an album dripping with diversity, an absolutely impressive piece of work. The White Rhino’s education runs the gamut. A multi-instrumentalist for years, he earned a degree in English and Music from Vanderbilt University in 2010. It was there, in Music City—Nashville—that the final grind was done completing his album, bringing a sonic precision to bear that has been heard too rarely.
The debut album follows the eclectic, twisting path of the artist who created it. That path is sometimes bleak, sometimes bright but always beautiful and, in its best moments, something close to brilliant.

you can download the free EP here. the "single" is aviators but it's 2010 and this is the internet- the single will be whichever song people like the most.

i totally understand this and i think he does too.
aviators is the 1 song he only wrote a bit of - the man in the studio wrote it with/for him. he personally is not totally in love with it (though i almost hesitate to speak for him but oh well) but he's hungry for success and looking to try anything.
it's too bad because i know it can put some people off. the rest of the album has some interesting stuff and he really is a talented musician.

see what i wrote above. you're 100% right. he's a young guy navigating the industry, trying whatever he can. i have around 0 idea about the music industry so i hesitate to give much advice on what is and isnt single material to anyone. aviators is designed to be a club song. i'm not exactly playing it on repeat if you know what i mean but, hey, that's not my style.
other stuff on there works for me though, hopefully you find something you like.
I just listened to the album and indeed as you said, it's very eclectic
To be honest the song I like to most is LGBT . Because I love gangsta rap and all that shit. I aslo like (You Are) Nothing to me Anymore; very nice instrumental. However I don't like songs made for clubs so Aviators is definitely not my cup of tea. All in all I'd love to hear more heavy rap songs, like LGBT.
About teh website, I'm not too familiar with besite design but this one seems very good, it looks professional and is easy to navigate.

I agree. It also sounds like 3OH!3. I like BHG better. Underwater mayyy be hip-hop. Aviators sounds like pop / dance. Judging the album by these two, it's a stretch to call the album hip-hop. I'll be listening to more regardless.

Yeah. I love B.o.B's mixtapes, but when he changed the type of songs he was on, I cringed a little. I even told him I didn't really like Nothing On You which is the main reason he blew up so quick. Maybe he should go for more of the aviators style though.I listened to Underwater, and realized I'd rather listen to Aviators :S
