I just took the GRE. Didn't get the score I want. Going to take it again. Looking for a study buddy, basically something like an accountability partner. Looking to put in 2 hours per day until I take it again (Dec 28 or so). Aiming for a 1500. If you're SERIOUS about this, pm me and we'll talk!

I don't particularly need to LEARN anything, just need to do LOTS of practice and memorize words... T_T!

What I'm looking for is someone to study with, and by that I really just mean someone that can push me, that I can push.

I.E , "hey lets study for 2 hours" ... it works a lot better if I feel like I'm working with someone, or that someone is sitting by me working with me, I dunno if this is a good way to explain it but surely some people will understand.

I used to do that when I was in university. My friend would be at her house and me at mine. We would check in every hour or so, take a 5 min break and back at it. Made some sort of accountability I suppose. Worked well for us.

I'm up for being your study/working buddy. Although, I don't know if you will be up to my caliber. I'm pretty hardcore when it comes to competition, and this will be a serious thing if you want to do it. I suggest we use AIM or MSN. If you are up for it, pm me and we can get this started.

What is your sleep schedule like? As in how late do you stay up studying? I work best in evening/night so that's when I'm gonna be powering through. Anyway, lets do this man.

How was the LSAT and law school? Thinking about a different path right now?

what area are you applying for? some programs don't care at all about your gre scores. for instance, i got a mere 760 math / 580 verbal and got into some pretty good schools (ranked around 8th-20th in my area). your time might be better spent preparing a better application in other ways than improving your gre score (unless you absolutely tanked it), such as your essays. just some food for thought.

wow 1500 is really high! If you got over 1400 the first time is it really worth it to take again?

I'm probably going to take the LSAT again in June. Basically I'm planning on doing a JD / MA (in Poli Sci / IR). Most programs I'm applying to that do joint degrees allow you to apply to law school during your first year of graduate study, so I'm going to just focus on getting into a masters program this year, then worry about law school next year.

GrayArea, I'm probably looking to put about 3 hours per day into it, and then 5 about a week before the test, then likely just do nothing the day before. I can work all throughout the day (except when I'm at work during the day?), but ya probably night times would be best.

Sort of a secondary question, how important are your GRE essay scores? I felt really good about the essays yesterday, although my verbal/quant wasn't what I wanted...

@AcrossFiveJulys - I suppose I don't really know how much GRE scores factor in, but my assumption is that if you get a certain score (different for each school) you have a solid chance. My other stuff I would think is pretty competitive (in terms of publications, GPA, work experience), so I'm hoping that a strong GRE score will put me over the top.

And uh, my top 3 choices for grad school would be: Georgetown FS, SAIS, and McGill (Tufts would be a 4th). So I think if I can get a mid 1400 I'll be ok (although since I already took the GRE I don't know how schools deal with you taking it twice... hopefully looking at the higher score or something)

Yeah, 1500 is quite high -_-

What field are you applying to? Even if you're applying to Harvard, you don't need a 1500 to be competitive. Once you reach a certain cutoff for score, other aspects of your application matter more.

What is the cutoff? I'll arbitrarily define it as 1200 based on other people's stats I've read about in forums.

Edit: Oh, didn't see that you're doing it poly sci. Anyway, whatever I wrote above still holds.

I got a 1320 T_T ... I feel like it's worth it to take it again to shoot high so at least I can have an average score of 1400.

1320 is still pretty good. I got a 1240 and got into grad school (engineering) just fine. I think it's worth asking graduate advisors their opinion. For my program they primarily looked at the math score (makes sense since it's engineering), and if you had lower than a 650 your abilities came into question. No one really cared about verbal since it's an engineering program, but each program has particular expectations for each subject. Some schools may want you to be in the 95th percentile in everything, so I guess you don't know unless you ask.

If you decide to keep studying I highly recommend the Princeton Review study book ONLY for the verbal section. I saw a lot of familiar words and probably would have managed much more than a 490 if I took longer than a week to study. Still, if you scored higher than a 600 on verbal, which is like the 90th percentile, then you're probably ok. Then again, "probably" isn't going to cut it, huh?

I felt that studying for the GRE was not very useful.

The math is easier than the SAT and if someone were applying for a math/engineering/physics graduate degree and got less than 750 I would find that extremely questionable. A perfect score only puts you into the 93rd-ish percentile.

For the essay section I think the most important part is to know the form of the questions. They're almost always the same and you can answer almost formulaicly. Read a practice book, sketch out an essay template, follow it on a practice essay.

The reading section is probably the hardest only because the vocabulary gets pretty absurd when you get the first few correct. I took the practice list from the Princeton Review book and went over it a few times the day before. I'm pretty sure I got a bunch of questions wrong but it still put me in 650 verbal which was 96th percentile.

On the other hand since it looks like you're a law student I guess verbal is far more important to you than math is.

well you should know that the GRE isn't like the LSAT. A 99th percentile GRE doesn't auto get you in anywhere unlike what a 175+ LSAT can do

of course it doesn't hurt, but sometimes its not worth it to retake because grad schools don't actually consider the GRE that much. Some schools don't even look it again as long as you are over their cutoff

I'm a math student, so the math (not the subject, the regular) was pretty much a joke. The verbal however was much harder than the SAT (in my opinion). It all just depends on what your strengths are.

To the poster above, you're absolutely correct--an 800 netted me a 94th percentile. )

If you're aiming for 1500+, I doubt a study buddy will help much since most of the studying is just memorizing vocab.

The reason that an 800 math only gets you a 94% is because 1. you are competing against a much smaller and smarter group of test takers as compared to the SATs (everybody takes SATs, not everybody applies to grad school), 2. you are competing with a lot of international students who are very strong in math.
