Heres the story TL... I was training in my dorm room for my CSL match tomorrow, door slightly open, and this girl who I'm close friends with comes in and starts watching. Now, mind you, this is the first time I've ever had a girl besides my mom watching me play SC:BW or SC2... I was more than a little nervous.. Anyways, after I won the game, I was waiting for the inevitable "wow you must put a lot of time into video games" (she is a pretty dancer for the university, I'm used to it by now..) However, instead she exclaimed "wow! thats so cool! can you teach me how to play?!" I was really awestruck, I'm so used to posh people looking down on video game as a silly hobby..
Anyways, I asked her if she had any experience with games, and she responded with "I've played mario a few times, and that game with the little green dinosaur (eventually i realized she meant yoshi, lol)." How do you teach someone with so minimal experience with even a keyboard/mouse to play the most competitive game ever? She is very very smart and studious, so I know she can do it if she puts her mind to it, but I don't want to burn her out with SC2's complexity right off the bat. But I also want to stay on the PC to get her used to using the keyboard and mouse, what do you think TL? Maybe diablo?

I'd hate teaching SC2 to a complete newbie.
I got my gf started on a counter-strike clone. Just told her what the controls are, and basics of how to adjust for recoil, and 3 months later she's as good as the average guy.

She likes you. Don't turn this into another fail girl blog. Have fun "teaching" her the basics of mining, making buildings, making units, but don't mention micro, macro, build orders, etc. Take this as an opportunity to flirt, and make a move at some point.

I would maybe start her off on the campaign mode. The cinematics and storyline might help her hold her interest a little better until she starts to understand the depth of the game. Maybe some custom maps. That's what drew me into BW initially.

I'm sure the awesome b.net 2.0 tutorial can do an awesome job...after all b.net 2.0 gotta have at least one useful feature..right?

"First, you have to make workers, then you have to go to dinner with me..."
Whatever you do, don't mention Day9. You'll shoot yourself in the foot if you do that.

Teach her how to play...
do not try to teach her how to be very good
|
The hardest part is not intimidating her with it. Just go over the basics, resource gathering, and producing units, using hot keys and take it slow.
Honestly I doubt she is going to commit to it, this has nothing to do with gender, just that SC is a lot more complex and requires more work then people realize, but its a good chance to flirt

Okay, forget what I said earlier, as well as what Ronald_McD, The6357, travis, and NukeTheBunnys said.
NevilleS has it right.

get her to silver league level and then stop, because anything past that requires them to get better through their own motivation. if she asks for help even past that because she isnt satisfied with her skill level then sure go ahead and keep teaching, but not otherwise.
and yes she is interested in you. depends on you how you want to take it.

he's probably aaron neville given the love wisdom

Just get her to play the beginning of the campaign while sitting beside you or something so you can answer any questions if she has any.
Or since she has played mario a 'few' times, get her an emulator and play through yoshi's island and get her coordination and reflexes up to at least a semi-acceptable level
|
Show her all the basic stuff :
1. NaDa FPVOD 2. TLPD 3. Klazart 200 WPM commentary 4. FBH ceremonys 5. ICCUP Korean hours.
And she might understand that due to her Mario gaming background.

Or you could try telling her to put her hand between yours and the mouse, so she can gain some "muscle memory" for playing. Extra points if you can do it with both hands at once, or convince her to tape her fingers to yours.

haha yeah, i told her to go ladder on iccup at 3am central, should get her on the right track.

There is no such thing is casual gaming in the starcraft world
Seriously I'd watch some commentary/replay while explaining the game basis. She will understand that you have to build an army as strong as your opponent or he will attack you. Also that you have to gather more ressource as the game goes on....
I would also show her the game commands (attack, move, build) without using the keyboard, she wont bother using ctrl or hotkeys at the beginning.

Stop and think about it for just a second.
Do you really believe she wants to learn to play starcraft, when the last game she played was ... mario?

NevilleS, right on the money

Dude. She went and found TL after she saw you post the OP, just to post this.
Are there enough hints yet?

But also..Australia....
Could have been so awesome.
