I just want to say up front that I'm not calling for the deletion of the Reaper. I just want to pose this question to the other TL bloggers and see what comes up.
I've been thinking about this lately. Admittedly, the thoughts are much more prevalent after getting spanked by reaper play, but I really wonder:
If reapers weren't in the game at all, would it change much for Terran?
The way I see it, they'd still have some ludicrously powerful early game options, they'd still have extremely viable harass options, and they'd still have units capable of "base raiding" and quickly tearing down buildings when players overextend and leave bases undefended.
To me, the reaper serves all those functions... But on top of other units that also do the same thing.
Lately I just see it as a "win more" unit...
Opinions?

I believe only Z has problems with reapers, they look fine in the other matchups.
But, if there were no reapers for terran, iguess not much would change.
|
nope, t would still be imba and the world would still keep on turning.
|
If reaper didnt exist, z could hatch first.
Then the other problem with t for z (mech) would be fixed with larger maps.
Stim marauder should be taken out though
|
I think it would make early game ZvT look and feel alot more like broodwar. Any hatch first BO in sc2 basically feels like cheesing because of how badly a reaper first bunker rush destroys it.
|
if reapers were removed, the game would be so much better. I don't face reapers much as Protoss, but just from watching games and sometimes getting Terran when I random in team games, for me, watching reaper play is boring as hell and USING them is also boring

Imagine there's no reapers, It's easy if you try,-
etc etc etc.

The return of the firebat?

o.O
I honestly expected more people to defend the reaper...
|
Yeah as a Protoss, I don't really have too much trouble with reapers. Fast stalker bam. The Zerg do, I think. But I think speedlings (which are pretty much a necessary unit for Zergs anyway) deal relatively well with them, no?
Taking the marauders out... now THAT would be game-changing for both the Zerg and the Protoss, in my opinion. I think they're the #1 unit in need of a nerf, tbh. The stim + concussive shells, hoo boy.

If there were no reapers, it would be a very good day for a zerg player

Well yeah, Morrow used them really well against Idra recently, but more focus is on other units as far as people crying out "omg imba!" Reapers are cute and can be really useful as a *possible* strategy, but they aren't gamebreaking (imo). Or maybe it's because they're in the shadow of the fearsome bio ball.
Maybe the Terrans haven't shown up yet to defend reapers?

Reapers aren't as bad as blue flame hellions.

I play Terran, and the reaper is still probably my least favorite unit in the game. It doesn't fit what I imagine as the Terran player mentality at all, in my opinion. But then again maybe I'm just stuck on SC1, but I liked it better when us Terrans had no early game harassment options, and were therefore, much more manly.
In fact, let's look at Terran's strong harassment options in SC2
Hellion Raven Medivac Reaper Banshee
Anddd strong harassment options in SC1
Vulture Dropship (Compare to Medivac, lol) Vessel Wraith (Compare to Banshee, lol)
I severely dislike Terran being so harassment based in SC2. It's like a complete change in race role. I just want to do epic manly pushes. =(
In conclusion, I'd be all for removing the damn reaper. (I love hellions/vultures though.)

i almost never build reapers, maybe sometimes i'll build one to scout and harass, but i like marauders so much more
|
Removing reapers would allow Zerg/Protoss to use openings not catered to block early reapers, without risking immediate death (except against BBS, which is a much riskier cheese).
I approve wholeheartedly. Marauders, Ghosts (w/academy), and infantry upgrades are a big enough draw for the Rax + Tech Lab. The Factory gets a similar payoff for its tech lab.
It would also be a massive boon to 2v2, in which mass reapers is even more effective because they force you to leave quite a few units in two bases instead of one.

Which is the worst part about reapers. If you don't build for them zerg are behind because they have to alter there build significantly in case you were going reapers.
