Project: Making my own 4-motored RC helicopter

I'm a second year electro engineering student, and I thought I'd spend some of the extra time I don't have on my hands creating an RC helicopter with 4 fans. (something like this: http://www.rctoys.com/rc-products/DF-VTI.html).
I was thinking of spending the rest of my remaining 2 years creating this, and maybe end it as my project-exam.

Why? 1. Its very educational and 2. It's awesome.

Now here comes my first batch of problems. As you can see from that site, one of those costs 900 dollars. That is a lot of money, and the helicopter will be put together for you..and thats not very educational.

The body of such a helicopter, excluding the circuit-board and software, costs around 120 dollars. This is a lot more affordable for a student.

Does any of you know anywhere that sells, rents or have released some kind of information/introductions as to how one builds one of these? And what is required to build your own circuit board and programming the chip?
Have any of you had any previous experience with this?

never seen a toy like that, so obviously I haven't got a glue where to get body for the chopper. But what about making it by yourself? shouldn't be too hard.
if you're going to make it as a project exam, shouldn't you find out the answers for these questions by yourself?

some kind of information/introductions as to how one builds one of these? And what is required to build your own circuit board and programming the chip?

I wouldn't count on TL for such info, while its true that all sorts of people hang out here and there might be a few that can help, i wouldnt hesitate to post this on forums that are dedicated for such a thing, if you haven't already.

I suppose you can get those things custom-built. Although you do need four almost-identical wings.

I will probably at one point have to create one entirely by scratch, but that for me right now is way too hard considering I don't have any experience with this.

And yes, I do realize the TL forums aren't exactly the best place to post about this. I am hoping to get lucky (in the literal sense)

Wouldn't it be more impressive if you came up with all of that on your own? Would entering a project that you put together based on instructions really be up to par? I have no idea, that's why I'm asking.

Doesn't sound too complex to build, you could probably just slap a microcontroller and a few peripherals onto a board and make it work.
I think the hardest part will be to work out the nuances of how it will actually fly, calibrating the steering, payload, etc.
